Book Labor Turnover in Industry

Download or read book Labor Turnover in Industry written by Paul Frederick Brissenden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labor Turnover in Industry: A Statistical Analysis The figures which constitute the basis for the statistical analysis presented in these pages were collected for the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics by the authors and other members of the Bureau's staff. A large part of the material thus collected already has been utilized in various articles published in the Bureau's Monthly Labor Review. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, however, is responsible neither for the opinions herein expressed by the authors nor for the statistical treatment its original figures have received at their hands. The authors desire to express their appreciation of the help they have received from Dr. Royal Meeker, formerly Commissioner of Labor Statistics and now editor of the International Labour Review, and from Mr. Lucian W. Chaney, of the staff of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Mr. Ethelbert Stewart, now Commissioner of Labor Statistics, was in general charge of the field work of the Bureau's investigation of labor turnover. Working with the authors under his direction were Messrs. Boris Emmet, William F. Kirk, and Irving Winslow. To them and to Mr. Stewart the authors are very much indebted and they wish to take this opportunity to express their appreciation. Although they are too numerous to mention by name, the authors desire to express their deep sense of obligation to the hundreds of employment managers, factory superintendents, and business executives who cheerfully put themselves to great inconvenience in order to furnish the necessary information. The authors earnestly hope that this analysis of the figures they so kindly furnished may be of use to some of them. To the Academy of Political Science at Columbia University, the Ronald Press Company, and the University of Chicago Press, the authors desire to extend thanks for permission to reprint material originally published in the Political Science Quarterly, Administration and the Journal of Political Economy. Book Unemployment Dynamics in the United States and West Germany

Download or read book Unemployment Dynamics in the United States and West Germany written by Markus Gangl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In writing this book, I increasingly became aware of the extent to which much of the finest social science research has been devoted to the issue of unemployment. Unemployment rightly is a key issue in the social sciences for search of social and political answers to the economic, social and psychological distress caused by un certainty and macroeconomic change. I was glad to find my own worries shared by eminent and respected scholars: George Akerlof once confessed to pursue the study of unemployment ultimately because of his father's distress from fear of un employment, and Wout Ultee started research on unemployment from the consid eration that parents' talk about unemployment risks should not come to dominate marriage parties or other family occasions. The problem of unemployment is thus hardly confmed to actual loss of income, but one where economic insecurity be gins to undermine the very fabric of society. In consequence, to combat unem ployment should indeed be a foremost issue in societies striving for freedom and justice for their citizenry, yet to succeed obviously requires an understanding of the underlying economic realities. If this study could contribute to this endeavor, all the time spent in writing would seem well spent indeed. Against the significant body of existing social science research on unemploy ment, it seems appropriate to be clear about the scope and limitations of the cur rent study, however.

Book Producer Dynamics

Download or read book Producer Dynamics written by Timothy Dunne and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Census Bureau has recently begun releasing official statistics that measure the movements of firms in and out of business and workers in and out of jobs. The economic analyses in Producer Dynamics exploit this newly available data on establishments, firms, and workers, to address issues in industrial organization, labor, growth, macroeconomics, and international trade. This innovative volume brings together a group of renowned economists to probe topics such as firm dynamics across countries; patterns of employment dynamics; firm dynamics in nonmanufacturing industries such as retail, health services, and agriculture; employer-employee turnover from matched worker/firm data sets; and turnover in international markets. Producer Dynamics will serve as an invaluable reference to economists and policy makers seeking to understand the links between firms and workers, and the sources of economic dynamics, in the age of globalization.

Book The Labor Market Dynamics of Economic Restructuring

Download or read book The Labor Market Dynamics of Economic Restructuring written by Ronald Schettkat and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-02-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study develops a framework for the analysis of labour market dynamics based upon a new dynamic flow analysis instead of the conventional labour stock data. To identify the dynamic elements in the labour market, information on flows is needed. Flow data that have become available in recent years - in this case on the US and Germany - show that an enormous amount of labour market mobility is occurring every month. Schettkat analyzes two of the world's most dynamic economies and labour markets - showing that the unemployed are far from being a fixed bloc but are rather a changing population responding greatly to structural alterations.
