Download or read book Commercial and Military Uses of Outer Space written by Melissa de Zwart and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book brings together a diverse range of chapters on space related topics. The authors included in this book are drawn from Australia and overseas, from academia, government, industry, civil society and the military. This book contains chapters that cover topics such as law, science, archaeology, defence, policy, and more, all with a focus on space. This edited collection is a timely international and interdisciplinary book, which addresses some of the contemporary issues facing activities in space and those attempting to understand, use and regulate the space domain. This edited book seeks to normalise the role of women as experts in the space sector, by not calling attention to the fact that all the authors are women – they are all experts in their respective fields who just happen to be women. Bringing together these contributions in this book in turn promotes the inclusion of diversity in the space sector. This edited collection is an opportunity to influence the development of the space industry – in terms of gender diversity, and diversity of disciplines and thinking – while it is in its formative stage, rather than trying to redress imbalances once they are entrenched in the industry.

You find discussions on a wide class of SATCOM networks using satellites as core components, as well as coverage key applications in the field. This in-depth resource presents a broad range of critical topics, from geosynchronous Earth orbiting (GEO) satellites and direct broadcast satellite systems, to low Earth orbiting (LEO) satellites, radio standards and protocols. This invaluable reference explains the many specific uses of satellite networks, including small-terminal wireless and mobile communications systems. Moreover, this book presents advanced topics such as satellite RF link analyses, optimum transponder loading, on-board processing, antenna characteristics, protected systems, information assurance, and spread spectrums. You are introduced to current and future SATCOM systems and find details on their performance supportabilities. This cutting-edge book also presents trends in multimedia satellite applications and IP services over satellites.
Download or read book Realizing the Potential of C4I written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-06-17 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid progress in information and communications technologies is dramatically enhancing the strategic role of information, positioning effective exploitation of these technology advances as a critical success factor in military affairs. These technology advances are drivers and enablers for the "nervous system" of the militaryâ€"its command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) systemsâ€"to more effectively use the "muscle" side of the military. Authored by a committee of experts drawn equally from the military and commercial sectors, Realizing the Potential of C4I identifies three major areas as fundamental challenges to the full Department of Defense (DOD) exploitation of C4I technologyâ€"information systems security, interoperability, and various aspects of DOD process and culture. The book details principles by which to assess DOD efforts in these areas over the long term and provides specific, more immediately actionable recommendations. Although DOD is the focus of this book, the principles and issues presented are also relevant to interoperability, architecture, and security challenges faced by government as a whole and by large, complex public and private enterprises across the economy.

Download or read book Innovations in Satellite Communications and Satellite Technology written by Daniel Minoli and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveys key advances in commercial satellite communications and what might be the implications and/or opportunities for end-users and service providers in utilizing the latest fast-evolving innovations in this field This book explores the evolving technical options and opportunities of satellite networks. Designed to be a self-contained reference, the book includes background technical material in an introductory chapter that will serve as a primer to satellite communications. The text discusses advances in modulation techniques, such as DBV-S2 extensions (DVS-S2X); spotbeam-based geosynchronous and medium earth orbit High Throughput Satellite (HTS) technologies and Internet applications; enhanced mobility services with aeronautical and maritime applications; Machine to Machine (M2M) satellite applications; emerging ultra HD technologies; and electric propulsion. The author surveys the latest innovations and service strategies and the resulting implications, which involves: Discussing advances in modulation techniques and HTS spotbeam technologies Surveying emerging high speed aeronautical mobility services and maritime and other terrestrial mobility services Assessing M2M (machine-to-machine) applications, emerging Ultra HD video technologies and new space technology Satellite communication is an integral part of the larger fields of commercial, television/media, government, and military communications, because of its multicast/broadcast capabilities, mobility, reliability, and global reach. High Throughput Satellites) are expected to revolutionize the field during this decade, providing very high speed, yet cost-effective, Internet access and connectivity anywhere in the world, in rural areas, in the air, and at sea. M2M connectivity, enabled by satellite communications, connects trucks on transcontinental trips, aircraft in real-time-telemetry aggregation, and mercantile ships. A comprehensive analysis of the new advances in satellite communications, Innovations in Satellite Communications Technology is a reference for telecommunications and satellite providers and end-users, technology investors, logistic professionals, and more.

Download or read book An Overview and Comparison of Demand Assignment Multiple Access DAMA Concepts for Satellite Communications Networks written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides a broad survey of demand assignment multiple access (DAMA) techniques for satellite communications. The primary intended audiences are military planners, communications system designers and architects, and the military acquisition community at large. However, much of the material in this report will also be of interest for commercial communications system planners and designers, especially where there is a potential for military use of these commercial systems. The report describes a wide (but not exhaustive) set of DAMA techniques, with emphasis on those techniques that offer the greatest practical benefit for military applications. Methods for making DAMA systems resistant to interference and jamming are discussed, including some new methods. The report covers both pure DAMA protocols, which efficiently handle voice traffic and long data transmissions, and hybrid DAMA protocols, which can efficiently handle not only voice and long data transmissions, but also short data transmissions (packets). Because of the increasing importance of packetized communications for the military, an entire chapter is devoted to the subject of hybrid DAMA. Selected performance results are presented, including some new performance results. To make the material in this report accessible to readers with only a basic background in communications, a substantial amount of tutorial material has been included.
