Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rufus Hallmark's book explores Robert Schumann's beloved yet controversial song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben and the poems of Adelbert von Chamisso on which it is based, setting them in the context of the challenges and social expectations faced by women in early nineteenth-century Germany. Hallmark provides the most extensive English-language study of Chamisso, a poet little known today outside Germany, including a biographical sketch and excerpts from his other poetry. He examines a range of poems about women, by Chamisso and others, and discusses the reception of the poetic and musical cycles, including illustrated editions, contemporary reviews, and other musical settings. Based on new studies of Schumann's manuscript sources and on comparative analyses of his songs and settings by Carl Loewe, Heinrich Marschner, Franz Lachner and others, Hallmark provides fresh musical and interpretive insights into each song.

Book Robert Schumann s Frauenliebe und Leben and Dominick Argento s From the Diary of Virginia Woolf

Download or read book Robert Schumann s Frauenliebe und Leben and Dominick Argento s From the Diary of Virginia Woolf written by Jeanette Marie Fontaine and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Schumann's Frauenliebe und -leben and Dominick Argento's From the Diary of Virginia Woolf are two song cycles that enjoy frequent performances. Argento modeled the large-scale form and dramatic concept of his own work after Schumann's cycle: eight songs depicting chronological moments from a woman's life feature a return in the last song to thematic material from the first song. With this comparative analysis of these two song cycles, the author argues that the two works have more in common than a broad schematic design. The song cycles are linked on many important musical and dramatic levels. Due to the preponderance in both Frauenliebe und -leben and From the Diary of Virginia Woolf of strophic- and rondo-like writing, there is an obsessive quality that becomes apparent, though the object of obsession is different in each of the cycles. In the Schumann cycle, it is the patriarchal view that a woman's obsession should be her husband, family, and home life. While in the Argento cycle, it is an artist's obsession with her writing and her own thoughts on the complexity of life that directs the listener. This document examines the similarities and differences between the two song cycles, primarily through musical means but taking into account text and drama, as well. Aspects such as text, concept, large- and small-scale formal structures, recurring motivic material, accompaniment, character and mood, and performance considerations all bear some degree of similarity between the two cycles and are examined here to show why they effectively complement one another in performance. A thorough understanding of both works and how they relate to each other also helps to inform the artists' performance.

Book The Song cycle frauenliebe Und leben by Robert Schumann

Download or read book The Song cycle frauenliebe Und leben by Robert Schumann written by Jocelyn Kaye Jensen and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The song cycle, Frauenliebe und-leben, by Robert Alexander Schumann was selected to be performed in recital and for purposes of this recital report. Several objectives were to be accomplished in writing this paper. Among these was the intent to achieve a better understanding of the complete poetic and musical lyricism unique to Schumann's songs, particularly those composed in 1840, the period in which the Frauenliebe und-leben were produced. In addition, an analysis of each of the eight songs in the cycle was undertaken to enable the performer and listener to have better technical understanding of the musical ideas invoked by Schumann and utilized in his songs. A cultural, political, and social overview of the Romantic Period of music during which this composer was working were incorporated in this report. This portion was included with the purpose of adding understanding of existing attitudes and stylistic characteristics of this time in history. The objectives generally discussed in the preceding paragraph involved research of an historical nature, supplemented by the individual dissection and analysis of each of the songs within the Frauenliebe und-leben song cycle. The recital-report offered this student and performer of music a scholarly approach to musical research, allowing a broadening of personal growth and greater respect for the works of Robert Alexander Schumann.

Book Singing Schumann

  • Author : Richard Miller
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2005-04-28

Download or read book Singing Schumann written by Richard Miller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-04-28 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singing Schumann is likely to become the standard introduction to some of the best-loved songs in the singer's repertoire. Written by a distinguished performer and internationally known teacher, the book offers astute, practical advice for bringing Robert Schumann's Lieder to life in performance. Richard Miller guides the reader through the interpretation of all of Schumann's solo and duet songs, drawing thoroughly on Schumann's compositional style and its historical background. In addition to covering the "familiar forty"--the much-performed songs Schumann composed in and around 1840 while trying to win the hand of Clara Wieck--Miller takes an in-depth look at the lesser known early and later songs. In particular, he focuses on the rich and varied repertoire of Schumann's later years, challenging the conventional view that these works reflect a decline in the composer's creative powers. Singing Schumann begins with an overview of Schumann as a song composer and then proceeds to survey the entire repertoire, song by song. It features the well-known cycles, including the Eichendorff Liederkreis, Frauenliebe und -leben, and Dichterliebe, as well as the Liederalbum für die Jugend and settings of texts by Goethe, Burns, Rückert, and Kulmann. Using numerous musical examples, Miller uncovers Schumann's characteristic compositional devices and describes his novel and experimental approaches to the interpretation of texts, often achieved through exceptionally colorful keyboard accompaniments. Musically sensitive and eminently readable, Singing Schumann is an invaluable guide for teachers, coaches, pianists, and singers.

Book Narrative and Robert Schumann s Songs

Download or read book Narrative and Robert Schumann s Songs written by Andrew H. Weaver and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring 28 music examples this book takes an innovative approach to analyzing and interpreting nineteenth-century German song, offering new perspectives on Robert Schumann's Lieder and song cycles. Robert Schumann's Lieder are among the richest and most complex songs in the repertoire and have long raised questions and stimulated discussion among scholars, performers, and listeners. Among the wide range of methodologies that have been used to understand and interpret his songs, one that has been conspicuously absent is an approach based on narratology (the theory and study of narrative texts). Proceeding from the premise that the performance of a Lied is a narrative act, in which the singer and pianist together function as a narrator, Andrew Weaver's groundbreaking study proposes a comprehensive theory of narratology for the German Romantic Lied and song cycle, using Schumann's complete song oeuvre as the test case. The theory, grounded in the work of narratologist Mieke Bal but also drawing upon recent work in literary theory and musicology, illuminates how music can open up new meanings for the poem, as well as how a narratological analysis of the poem can help us understand the music. Weaver's book offers new insights into Schumann's Lieder and the poetry he set while simultaneously proposing a methodology applicable to the analysis and interpretation of a wide range of works, including not only the rich treasury of German Lieder but also potentially any genre of accompanied song in any language from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Book Twentieth and Twenty First Century Song Cycles

Download or read book Twentieth and Twenty First Century Song Cycles written by Gordon Sly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twentieth- and Twenty-First-Century Song Cycles: Analytical Pathways Toward Performance presents analyses of fourteen song cycles composed after the turn of the twentieth century, with a focus on offering ways into the musical and poetic structure of each cycle to performers, scholars, and students alike. Ranging from familiar works of twentieth-century music by composers such as Schoenberg, Britten, Poulenc, and Shostakovich to lesser-known works by Van Wyk, Sviridov, Wheeler, and Sánchez, this collection of essays captures the diversity of the song cycle repertoire in contemporary classical music. The contributors bring their own analytical perspectives and methods, considering musical structures, the composers' selection of texts, how poetic narratives are expressed, and historical context. Informed by music history, music theory, and performance, Twentieth- and Twenty-First-Century Song Cycles offers an essential guide into the contemporary art-music song cycle for performers, scholars, students, and anyone seeking to understand this unique genre.
