Book An All at once Reduced Hessian SQP Scheme for Aerodynamic Design Optimization

Download or read book An All at once Reduced Hessian SQP Scheme for Aerodynamic Design Optimization written by Dan Feng and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper introduces a computational scheme for solving a class of aerodynamic design problems that can be posed as nonlinear equality constrained optimizations. The scheme treats the flow and design variables as independent variables, and solves the constrained optimization problem via reduced Hessian successive quadratic programming. It updates the design and flow variables simultaneously at each iteration and allows flow variables to be infeasible before convergence. The solution of an adjoint flow equation is never needed. In addition, a range space basis is chosen so that in a certain sense the 'cross term' ignored in reduced Hessian SQP methods is minimized. Numerical results for a nozzle design using the quasi-one-dimensional Euler equations show that this scheme is computationally efficient and robust. The computational cost of a typical nozzle design is only a fraction more than that of the corresponding analysis flow calculation. Superlinear convergence is also observed, which agrees with the theoretical properties of this scheme. All optimal solutions are obtained by starting far away from the final solution."

Book Aerodynamic Design Optimization Via Reduced Hessian Sqp with Solution Refining

Download or read book Aerodynamic Design Optimization Via Reduced Hessian Sqp with Solution Refining written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An all-at-once reduced Hessian Successive Quadratic Programming (SQP) scheme has been shown to be efficient for solving aerodynamic design optimization problems with a moderate number of design variables. This paper extends this scheme to allow solution refining. In particular, we introduce a reduced Hessian refining technique that is critical for making a smooth transition of the Hessian information from coarse grids to fine grids. Test results on a nozzle design using quasi-one-dimensional Euler equations show that through solution refining the efficiency and the robustness of the all-at-once reduced Hessian SQP scheme are significantly improved. Book Optimization Techniques Exploiting Problem Structure

Download or read book Optimization Techniques Exploiting Problem Structure written by Ajit R. Shenoy and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The research presented in this dissertation investigates the use of all-at-once methods applied to aerodynamic design. All-at-once schemes are usually based on the assumption of sufficient continuity in the constraints and objectives, and this assumption can be troublesome in the presence of shock discontinuities. Special treatment has to be considered for such problems and we study several approaches. Our all-at-once methods are based on the Sequential Quadratic Programming method, and are designed to exploit the structure inherent in a given problem. The first method is a Reduced Hessian formulation which projects the optimization problem to a lower dimension design space. The second method exploits the sparse structure in a given problem which can yield significant savings in terms of computational effort as well as storage requirements. An underlying theme in all our applications is that careful analysis of the given problem can often lead to an efficient implementation of these all-at-once methods. Chapter 2 describes a nozzle design problem involving one-dimensional transonic flow. An initial formulation as an optimal control problem allows us to solve the problem as as two-point boundary problem which provides useful insight into the nature of the problem. Using the Reduced Hessian formulation for this problem, we find that a conventional CFD method based on shock capturing produces poor performance. The numerical difficulties caused by the presence of the shock can be alleviated by reformulating the constraints so that the shock can be treated explicitly. This amounts to using a shock fitting technique. In Chapter 3, we study variants of a simplified temperature control problem. The control problem is solved using a sparse SQP scheme. We show that for problems where the underlying infinite-dimensional problem is well-posed, the optimizer performs well, whereas it fails to produce good results for problems where the underlying infinite-dimensional problem is ill-posed. A transonic airfoil design problem is studied in Chapter 4, using the Reduced SQP formulation. We propose a scheme for performing the optimization subtasks that is based on an Euler Implicit time integration scheme. The motivation is to preserve the solution-finding structure used in the analysis algorithm. Preliminary results obtained using this method are promising. Numerical results have been presented for all the problems described.

Book Large Scale PDE Constrained Optimization in Applications

Download or read book Large Scale PDE Constrained Optimization in Applications written by Subhendu Bikash Hazra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-16 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With continuous development of modern computing hardware and applicable - merical methods, computational ?uid dynamics (CFD) has reached certain level of maturity so that it is being used routinely by scientists and engineers for ?uid ?ow analysis. Since most of the real-life applications involve some kind of optimization, it has been natural to extend the use of CFD tools from ?ow simulation to simu- tion based optimization. However, the transition from simulation to optimization is not straight forward, it requires proper interaction between advanced CFD meth- ologies and state-of-the-art optimization algorithms. The ultimate goal is to achieve optimal solution at the cost of few ?ow solutions. There is growing number of - search activities to achieve this goal. This book results from my work done on simulation based optimization problems at the Department of Mathematics, University of Trier, and reported in my postd- toral thesis (”Habilitationsschrift”) accepted by the Faculty-IV of this University in 2008. The focus of the work has been to develop mathematical methods and - gorithms which lead to ef?cient and high performance computational techniques to solve such optimization problems in real-life applications. Systematic development of the methods and algorithms are presented here. Practical aspects of implemen- tions are discussed at each level as the complexity of the problems increase, suppo- ing with enough number of computational examples.

Book Large Scale PDE Constrained Optimization

Download or read book Large Scale PDE Constrained Optimization written by Lorenz T. Biegler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal design, optimal control, and parameter estimation of systems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs) give rise to a class of problems known as PDE-constrained optimization. The size and complexity of the discretized PDEs often pose significant challenges for contemporary optimization methods. With the maturing of technology for PDE simulation, interest has now increased in PDE-based optimization. The chapters in this volume collectively assess the state of the art in PDE-constrained optimization, identify challenges to optimization presented by modern highly parallel PDE simulation codes, and discuss promising algorithmic and software approaches for addressing them. These contributions represent current research of two strong scientific computing communities, in optimization and PDE simulation. This volume merges perspectives in these two different areas and identifies interesting open questions for further research.
