Book History Fall of the Jesuits in the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book History Fall of the Jesuits in the Eighteenth Century written by Alexis De Saint-Priest and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History Fall of the Jesuits in the Eighteenth Century: Translated From the French The Jesuits in Portugal - Their Influence - Conspiracy of the Fidalgos - The Marquis de Pombal - The Jesuits banished from Portugal. Toward the close of the Eighteenth century an event occurred which marked the history of this period with a character of no ordinary importance - the expulsion of the Society of the Jesuits from the principal Catholic states in Europe, and their suppression by the See of Rome. It appears strange that the interest attaching to these events, keenly and universally as it was felt at the period when they occurred, has never attracted the due attention of the historian; whilst such partial accounts as have been published abound with misrepresentations and party perversion. The object of the present work is to supply in part this blank page in history, by giving an impartial narrative of events, founded upon such authentic documents as the author has been fortunate enough to have at his command. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Disquisition, Philosophical and Political, Concerning the Society of the Jesuits, and the Causes and Consequences of Their Destruction That this society has had celebrity, is agreed on all hands. That it has performed a leading part in the schools, and on the theatre of almost every go vernment in Europe, is an incontestable fact, not denied either by its flatterers or slanderers. Its successes, its failures, the causes of its fall, become then fair and Open' field to the historian. Asto hished at the enormity of the charges preferred against it, I have carefully examined them with the authenticated annals of the nations in which they were accused. Having cleared away my doubts, and dissipated my suspicions; I cherished the pleas: ing conviction, that it would be useful and accept able to my countrymen, to communicate to them the genuine results ofthe enquiries I made for my own instruction. I shall speak as freely of the enemies of the Osociety as' of its advocates; I shall quote the testimony of kings, of the ministers of different so vereigns, of the learned of different nations, all tending to throw daylight upon its history and its importance. I shall examine with rigorous scrupu losity, the principal charges of accusation against' it, namely, regicide, ambition, avarice, and loose' morals, In awhrd, I shall close the disquisition by some observations upon the necessary consequences of its destruction 111 France and other countries. Book A Candid History of the Jesuits Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Candid History of the Jesuits Classic Reprint written by Joseph McCabe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Candid History of the Jesuits It is the historic custom of the Church of Rome to enlist in its service monastic or quasi-monastic bodies in addition to the ordinary clergy. In its hour of greatest need, at the very outbreak of the Reformation, the Society of Jesus was formed as one of these auxiliary regiments, and in the war which the Church of Rome has waged since that date the Jesuits have rendered the most spirited and conspicuous service. Yet the procedure of this Society has differed in many important respects from that of the other regiments of the Church, and a vast and unceasing controversy has gathered about it. It is probable that a thousand times, or several thousand times, more books and pamphlets and articles have been written about the Jesuits than about even the oldest and most powerful or learned of the monastic bodies. Not a work of history can be opened, in any language, but it will contain more references to the Jesuits than to all the other religious orders collectively. But opinions differ as much to-day as they did a hundred or two hundred years ago about the character of the Jesuits, and the warmest eulogies are chilled by the most bitter and withering indictments. What is a Jesuit? The question is asked still in every civilised land, and the answer is a confusing mass of contradictions. Book The Jesuits and the Monarchy

Download or read book The Jesuits and the Monarchy written by Eric Nelson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first three decades of Bourbon rule in France coincided with a period of violent fragmentation followed by rapid renewal within the French Catholic community. In the early 1590s, when Henri IV - Protestant head of the Bourbon house - acceded to the throne, French Catholics were at war with each other as Leaguer and Navarrist factions fought both militarily and ideologically for control of Catholic France. However, by 1620 a partially reconciled French church was in the process of defining a distinctive reform movement as French Catholics, encouraged by their monarchs, sought to assimilate aspects of the international Catholic reformation with Gallican traditions to renew their church. By 1650 this French Catholic church, and its distinctive reform movement forged in the decades following the collapse of the Catholic League, had become one of the most influential movements in European Catholicism. This study reconsiders the forces behind these dramatic developments within the French church through the re-examination of a classic question in French history: Why was the Society of Jesus able to integrate successfully into the French church in the opening decades of the seventeenth-century, despite being expelled from much of the kingdom in 1594 for its alleged role in the attempted assassination of the king? The expulsion, recall and subsequent integration of the Society into the French church offers a unique window into the evolution of French Catholicism between 1590 and 1620. It provides new insight into how Henri IV re-established royal authority in the French Catholic church following the collapse of the Catholic League and how this development helped to heal the rifts in French Catholicism wrought by the Leaguer movement. It also explores in unprecedented detail how Henri played an important role in channelling religious energy in his kingdom towards forms of Catholic piety -exemplified by his new allies the Jesuits - which became the foundation of
