Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of Ireland, Vol. 1 of 2: Statistical and Political To point out the advantages which England might derive from Ireland, were its interests better understood, and its energies properly encouraged by sound and well digested laws, is the principal object of the facts and observations collected 1n the following sheets. They were sought after for the purpose of supplying, with authentic materials and documents, those who may be disposed hereafter to turn their thoughts to this subject; and, I hope, however defective this work may be in style, that the matter will be found important, if not interesting. It is, indeed, generally ad mitted, that the situation of Ireland, so far from being known and appre ciated in Great Britain as it ought to be, and as it easily might be, is very imperfectly understood. Kennedy, from India to the Australian outback. In two volumes of masterful storytelling he creates ironic, playful, and acerbic historical miniatures - a quixotic series of reconstructions woven into a helix in which the same historical figures reappear in radically different contexts as their narratives intersect with the larger picture.

Book The Invention of the White Race Volume 1

Download or read book The Invention of the White Race Volume 1 written by Theodore W. Allen and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the first Africans arrived in Virginia in 1619, there were no “white” people there. Nor, according to colonial records, would there be for another sixty years. In this seminal two-volume work, The Invention of the White Race, Theodore W. Allen tells the story of how America’s ruling classes created the category of the “white race” as a means of social control. Since that early invention, white privileges have enforced the myth of racial superiority, and that fact has been central to maintaining ruling-class domination over ordinary working people of all colors throughout American history. Volume I draws lessons from Irish history, comparing British rule in Ireland with the “white” oppression of Native Americans and African Americans. Allen details how Irish immigrants fleeing persecution learned to spread racial oppression in their adoptive country as part of white America. Since publication in the mid-nineties, The Invention of the White Race has become indispensable in debates on the origins of racial oppression in America. In this updated edition, scholar Jeffrey B. Perry provides a new introduction, a short biography of the author and a study guide.

Excerpt: ... to the extreme of want, idleness and misery, it is evident that no description can be given, which would be generally applicable: there are circumstances, however, which operate in some measure as influencing causes to these cfiects, and of which the notice may not be useless. The inhabitants of the parish are divided into two Scplcln and races of men, as totally distinct as iftliey belonged to l, mh' difierent countries and regions. These (in order that we may avoid the invidious terms of Protestant and Roman Catholic, which indeed have little to say to the matter, ) may be distinguished by the usual names of Scotch and Irish, the former including the descendants of all the Scotch and English colonists, who have emigrated hither since the time of James I. and the latter comprehending the native and original inhabitants of the country. Than these, no two classes of men can be more distinct: _ the Scotch are remarkable for their comfortable houses and appearance, regular conduct, prudence and perseverance in business, and their being almost entirely manufacturers: the Irish, on the other hand, are more negligent in their habitations, less regular and guarded in their conduct, and have a; total indisposition to manufacture: both are industrious, but the industry of the Scotch is steady, patient and directed with great foresight; while that of the Irish is rash, adventurous and variable: both are extremely frugal and simple in their ordinary food, but the advantage arising from this, is often lost to the Irish, by their extravagance at fairs, wakes and merry-makings, an indiscretion of which the Scotch are seldom guilty. It is a matter of fact also, that the state or condition of the IC: il: Ch and Scotch is gradually and regularly...

Download or read book Irish Materialisms written by Colleen Taylor and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish Materialisms: The Nonhuman and the Making of Colonial Ireland, 1690-1830, is the first book to apply recent trends in new materialist criticism to Ireland. It radically shifts familiar colonial stereotypes of the feminized, racialized cottier according to the Irish peasantry's subversive entanglement with nonhuman materiality. Each of the chapters engages a focused case study of an everyday object in colonial Ireland (coins, flax, spinning wheels, mud, and pigs) to examine how each object's unique materiality contributed to the colonial ideology of British paternalism and afforded creative Irish expression. The main argument of Irish Materialisms is its methodology: of reading literature through the agency of materiality and nonhuman narrative in order to gain a more egalitarian and varied understanding of colonial experience. Irish Materialisms proves that new materialism holds powerful postcolonial potential. Through an intimate understanding of the materiality Irish peasants handled on a daily basis, this book presents a new portrait of Irish character that reflects greater empowerment, resistance, and expression in the oppressed Irish than has been previously recognized.

Book Ireland and Irish America

Download or read book Ireland and Irish America written by Kerby A. Miller and published by Field Day Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1600 and 1929, perhaps seven million men and women left Ireland and crossed the Atlantic. Ireland and Irish America is concerned with Catholics and Protestants, rural and urban dwellers, men and women on both sides of that vast ocean. Drawing on over thirty years of research, in sources as disparate as emigrants' letters and demographic data, it recovers the experiences and opinions of emigrants as varied as the Rev. James McGregor, who in 1718 led the first major settlement of Presbyterians from Ulster to the New World, Mary Rush, a desperate refugee from the Great Famine in County Sligo, and Tom Brick, an Irish-speaking Kerryman on the American prairie in the early 1900s. Above all, Ireland and Irish America offers a trenchant analysis of mass migration's causes, its consequences, and its popular and political interpretations. In the process, it challenges the conventional 'two traditions' (Protestant versus Catholic) paradigm of Irish and Irish diasporan history, and it illuminates the hegemonic forces and relationships that governed the Irish and Irish-American worlds created and linked by transatlantic capitalism.

Book Ireland and the Industrial Revolution

Download or read book Ireland and the Industrial Revolution written by Andy Bielenberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-05-07 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides the first comprehensive analysis of industrial development in Ireland and its impact on Irish society between 1801-1922. Studies of Irish industrial history to date have been regionally focused or industry specific. The book addresses this problem by bringing together the economic and social dimensions of Irish industrial history during the Union between Ireland and Great Britain. In this period, British economic and political influences on Ireland were all pervasive, particularly in the industrial sphere as a consequence of the British industrial revolution. By making the Irish industrial story more relevant to a wider national and international audience and by adopting a more multi-disciplinary approach which challenges many of the received wisdoms derived from narrow regional or single industry studies - this book will be of interest to economic historians across the globe as well as all those interested in Irish history more generally.
