Book The Recovery of Roman Britain 1586 1906

Download or read book The Recovery of Roman Britain 1586 1906 written by Richard Hingley and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-06-26 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the sixteenth century, classical texts enabled Scottish and English authors and artists to imagine the character and appearance of their forebears and to consider the relevance of these ideas to their contemporaries. Richard Hingley's study crosses traditional academic boundaries by exploring sources usually separately addressed by historians, classicists, archaeologists, and geographers, to provide a new perspective on the origin of English and Scottish identity. His book is the first full exploration of these issues to cover such a long period in the development of British society and to relate ideas derived from Roman sources to the development of empire, while also placing ideas of origin in a European context. It is illustrated throughout with artefact drawings, site plans, and photographs.

Book Roman Mosaics of Britain Western Britain

Download or read book Roman Mosaics of Britain Western Britain written by David S. Neal and published by Society of Antiquaries of London. This book was released on 2002 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings to a triumphant conclusion this monumental project to catalogue, describe and illustrate every Romano-British mosaic. The area covered by the fourth and final volume in the corpus is one of the richest regions of Britain in economic as well as architectural and artistic terms and this is reflected in the quantity and quality of the region's mosaics, which include the largest figured mosaic ever found in Britain - the Woodchester Orpheus pavement - which was perhaps the inspiration for the other famous Orpheus mosaics of the Roman Cotswolds. At the heart of this affluent region is Cirencester, Roman Britain's second largest town, represented here by more than sixty mosaics, the second-century examples being the most exquisite in the country. There are also many fine mosaics from the region's highly ornate villas, as well as from the towns of Gloucester, Caerwent and Wroxeter. The catalogue follows the format of earlier volumes in providing an account of each mosaic's discovery and locating the mosaic within its building plan. Following the description are notable parallels and major references. Many of the illustrations are by the authors, with additional ones by Luigi Thompson, as well as photographs and historical engravings, a high proportion of the latter by Samuel Lysons whose home was in Gloucestershire where he did much of his pioneering work in archaeological excavation and illustration. Brief biographies of Lysons and all the other artists whose work grace all four volumes appear at the end of this volume. As with previous volume the work is preceded with a substantial introduction. This deals with the history and topography of the region, buildings and rooms, an assessment of regional workshops, and schemes, ending with a consideration of mosaics in relation to the end of Roman Britain.

Book Antiquarianism in the Augustan Age

Download or read book Antiquarianism in the Augustan Age written by Theodorus Hendrikus Bernardus Maria Harmsen and published by Peter Lang Limited, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph describes the life and work of Thomas Hearne (1678-1735), learned Oxford scholar, diarist, bibliographer, historical antiquary, publisher and editor. Hearne worked at the centre of English intellectual life in the early eighteenth century. A nonjuror and jacobite, he was a colourful and controversial figure who has drawn much comment from scholars of various disciplines up to this day. Hearne is as renowned for his observations of English academic life and manners in the Augustan Age (in 145 diary volumes of 'Remarks and Collections') as for his invaluable series of publications of the sources of English medieval and Reformation history. This study creates a full portrait of Hearne based on all the manuscript sources available today, including the diaries, the collection of books and manuscripts and the wide correspondence with eminent men of the time. This appraisal adds to our understanding of Hearne in the context of his time, and shows modern scholarship's great indebtedness to his scholarly achievements. Antiquarianism in the Augustan Age forms a significant contribution to modern studies of eighteenth-century politics and religion, English history and historiography, and the rich tradition of antiquarianism.
