Book Ontology and the Ambitions of Metaphysics

Download or read book Ontology and the Ambitions of Metaphysics written by Thomas Hofweber and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many significant problems in metaphysics are tied to ontological questions, but ontology and its relation to larger questions in metaphysics give rise to a series of puzzles that suggest that we don't fully understand what ontology is supposed to do, nor what ambitions metaphysics can have for finding out about what reality is like. Thomas Hofweber aims to solve these puzzles about ontology and consequently to make progress on four central metaphysical problems: the philosophy of arithmetic, the metaphysics of ordinary objects, the problem of universals, and the question of whether the reality is independent of us. Crucial parts of the proposed solution involve considerations about quantification and its relationship to ontology, the place of reference in natural languages, the possibility of ineffable facts, the extent of empirical evidence in metaphysics, and whether metaphysics can be properly esoteric. Overall, Hofweber defends a rationalist account of arithmetic, an empiricist picture in the philosophy of ordinary objects, a restricted form of nominalism, and realism about reality, understood as all there is, but idealism about reality, understood as all that is the case. He defends metaphysics as having some questions of fact that are distinctly its own, with a limited form of autonomy from other parts of inquiry, but rejects several metaphysical projects and approaches as being based on a mistake.

Book excerpt: Our ambitions determine the kind of person we become, and the kind of person we become determines what we will do in life. And since what we do in life can have lastingeven eternalresults, its no surprise that many of us strive to reach our ambitions. Yet while we can be consumed with pursuing worldly, secular ambitions for career and family, our spiritual ambitions are too often left to chance as we drift through life. Spiritual Ambitions: How Rich Do You Want to Be in Eternity? challenges us to identify our spiritual ambitions and evaluate their genuine importance to our lives. Whether you want to start a ministry, become a pastor, or just be more mindful of Gods presence in your life, author Tom Schulte shows you how to set your ambitions and listen for Gods guidance to follow the path he sets out before you. To be used by God to fulfill his purpose is the greatest reward and victory we can have as Christians, but first we must be the kind of person who is pleasing to God. Book Colossal Ambitions

  • Author : Adrian Brettle
  • Publisher : University of Virginia Press
  • Release : 2020-07-16
  • ISBN : 0813944384
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book Colossal Ambitions written by Adrian Brettle and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading politicians, diplomats, clerics, planters, farmers, manufacturers, and merchants preached a transformative, world-historical role for the Confederacy, persuading many of their compatriots to fight not merely to retain what they had but to gain their future empire. Impervious to reality, their vision of future world leadership—territorial, economic, political, and cultural—provided a vitally important, underappreciated motivation to form an independent Confederate republic. In Colossal Ambitions, Adrian Brettle explores how leading Confederate thinkers envisioned their postwar nation—its relationship with the United States, its place in the Americas, and its role in the global order. Brettle draws on rich caches of published and unpublished letters and diaries, Confederate national and state government documents, newspapers published in North America and England, conference proceedings, pamphlets, contemporary and scholarly articles, and more to engage the perspectives of not only modern historians but some of the most salient theorists of the Western World in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. An impressive and complex undertaking, Colossal Ambitions concludes that while some Confederate commentators saw wartime industrialization as pointing toward a different economic future, most Confederates saw their society as revolving once more around coercive labor, staple crop production, and exports in the war’s wake.
