Book Palliative Care in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Download or read book Palliative Care in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis written by David Oliver and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or motor neurone disease) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that can cause profound suffering for both the patient and their family. Whilst new treatments for ALS are being developed, these are not curative and offer only the potential to slow its progression. Palliative care must therefore be integral to the clinical approach to the disease. Palliative Care in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: From diagnosis to bereavement reflects the wide scope of this care; it must cover not just the terminal phase, but support the patient and their family from the onset of the disease. Both the multidisciplinary palliative care team and the neurology team are essential in providing a high standard of care and allowing quality of life (both patient and carer) to be maintained. Clear guidelines are provided to address care throughout the disease process. Control of symptoms is covered alongside the psychosocial care of patients and their families. Case studies are used to emphasise the complexity of the care needs and involvement of the patient and family, culminating in discussion of bereavement. Different models of care are explored, and this new edition utilizes the increase in both the evidence-base and available literature on the subject. New topics discussed include complementary therapies, personal and family experiences of ALS, new genetics research, and updated guidelines for patient care, to ensure this new edition remains the essential guide to palliative care in ALS.

Book Fast Facts Diagnosing Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Download or read book Fast Facts Diagnosing Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis written by Martin Turner and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease or motor neuron disease) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that exerts a notorious life-shortening physical toll. Understandably, clinicians are keen to avoid a wrong diagnosis when there are such serious consequences, but any delay in diagnosis can result in unnecessary, and sometimes harmful, interventions, and prevents prompt implementation of much-needed physical and emotional support. Starting from the premise that ALS is not one disease but a syndrome, with a spectrum of upper and lower motor neuron involvement, this highly readable resource examines the causes of diagnostic delay and how to avoid them. With no diagnostic test to confirm the disease, no mandatory investigations and very few plausible 'ALS mimics', the authors take a pragmatic approach to what must always be a clinical diagnosis. With case presentations and teaching points to aid understanding, 'Fast Facts: ALS' will give clinicians the confidence to confirm or exclude a diagnosis of ALS, so that individuals facing this most challenging of conditions can receive rapid multidisciplinary support to maximize the quality of their remaining life. Contents: • Defining the syndrome • Epidemiology and pathophysiology • The first symptoms • Differential diagnosis • Investigations • Emerging diagnostic biomarkers

Book Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in Veterans

Download or read book Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in Veterans written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-10-27 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) our Lou Gehrig's disease is a fatal, mostly non-familial disease that affects the nervous system of humans by causing the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The degeneration halts communication between the nervous system and voluntary muscles in the body. This leads to muscle paralysis and eventually the muscles that aid in breathing are affect; causing respiration to fail. The disease, which affects 20,000-30,000 men and women in the United States at any given time, has no effective treatment; most people with ALS die from respiratory failure within 5 years of the onset of symptoms. Recent epidemiologic studies report an association between the development of ALS and prior service in the U.S. military. The studies evaluated either veterans of the 1991 Persian Gulf War or veterans who served in the military in the period 1910-1982. Due to these findings, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) asked the National Academies to conduct an assessment of the potential relationship between military service and the later development of ALS. The project was assigned to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), which appointed a committee and gave it the task of evaluating the scientific literature on ALS in veterans. The committee began its work by identifying medical and scientific literature on ALS. PubMed, a database created and managed by the National Library of Medicine. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in Veterans; Review of the Scientific Literature presents the findings of this committee. The committee reviewed, evaluated, and summarized the scientific literature on ALS in veterans, composed primarily of peer-reviewed, published literature. This report includes the recommendations of the committee.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eliot H. Dunsky, MD, is a retired physician who since his diagnosis in 2009 has been living with ALS, the complex, progressively debilitating disorder commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Determined to maintain the best quality of life possible-for as long as possible-he extensively researched the condition and its management. As he immersed himself, talking to ALS patients and exploring emerging assistive technologies and aids, he realized that misunderstanding of this complicated disease was rife, preventing many from making the most of the precious years left. The result is this compilation of not only his personal experiences as his own condition advanced but also current research and links to additional specialized resources. Its aim is to help other patients learn to live with their diagnosis and navigate the day-to-day struggles associated with it. Appropriate symptom management can help fend off the devastating effects of the disease for a longer period of time. ALS: An Orientation offers a practical guide for patients and their families on maximizing quality of life through strategic care and, importantly, coping with the emotional toll the disease can take. A terminal diagnosis simply means savoring to the fullest the life that is still possible.
