Book Enacting Brittany

    Book Details:
  • Author : Patrick Young
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-03-02
  • ISBN : 1317144066
  • Pages : 371 pages

Download or read book Enacting Brittany written by Patrick Young and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brittany offers an excellent example of a French region that once attracted a certain cultivated elite of travel connoisseurs but in which more popular tourism developed relatively early in the twentieth century. It is therefore a strategic choice as a case study of some of the processes associated with the emergence of mass tourism, and the effects of this kind of tourism development on local populations. Efforts to package Breton cultural difference in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries marked a significant advance in heritage tourism, and a departure from what is commonly perceived to be a French intolerance of cultural diversity within its borders. This study explores the means by which key actors - middle class associations, businesses, governmental bodies, cultural intermediaries - pursued tourist development in the region and the effect this had on Breton cultural identification. Chapters are arranged thematically and consider the rise of rural tourism in France and the preservation, display, and enactment of Breton culture in its most visible locations: the natural landscape of Brittany, Breton dress, early heritage festivals and religious Pardons. The final chapter explores the staging of Breton culture at the Paris World's Fair of 1937 and the roots of state-sponsored mass tourism. Beyond those interested in the history of French tourism, this study will also be invaluable to historians and social scientists concerned with understanding the dynamics involved in the emergence of mass tourism, its causes and consequences in particular locales in the present as well as in the past.

Book The Pyrenees in the Modern Era

Download or read book The Pyrenees in the Modern Era written by Martyn Lyons and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original study examines different incarnations of the Pyrenees, beginning with the assumptions of 18th-century geologists, who treated the mountains like a laboratory, and romantic 19th-century tourists and habitués of the spa resorts, who went in search of the picturesque and the sublime. The book analyses the individual visions of the heroic Pyrenees which in turn fascinated 19th-century mountaineers and the racing cyclists of the early Tour de France. Martyn Lyons also investigates the role of the Pyrenees during the Second World War as an escape route from Nazi-occupied France, when for thousands of refugees these dangerous borderlands became 'the mountains of liberty', and considers the place of the Pyrenees in recent times right up to the present day. Drawing on travel writing, press reports and scientific texts in several languages, The Pyrenees in the Modern Era explores both the French and Spanish sides of the Pyrenees to provide a nuanced historical understanding of the cultural construction of one of Europe's most prominent border regions. This book will be of great interest to scholars and students of Europe's cultural history in a transnational context.

Book Stories of the Celtic Soul Friends

Download or read book Stories of the Celtic Soul Friends written by Edward Cletus Sellner and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward C. Sellner tells of the tradition of the Celtic anamchara or soul friend, the loving mentor who promotes the spiritual growth of those he or she guides, in his original and insightful Stories of the Celtic Soul Friends. Here, punctuated by the stimulating stories of the four leaders of the early Celtic church--St. Patrick, St.Brigit, St. Columcille and the relatively obscure St. Colman of Land Ela--the author traces, celebrates and demonstrates the tradition's immediacy to our own faith, lives, and work, holding Jesus as the perfect exemplar. Mentors, teachers of religion, pastors, counselors, and anyone embarking upon a spiritual journey, should find this a beneficial, as well as invigorating, read. --A new twist on Celtic spirituality --Along with the always popular St. Patrick, this book introduces lesser-known Celtic saints
