Download or read book History Through the Opera Glass written by George Jellinek and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2000 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Limelight). This first-of-its-kind, highly entertaining, and carefully researched account reveals how nearly 200 operas by leading composers and librettists have portrayed the major events and personalities of more than 2000 years of history. In a continuous and absorbing narrative, the book sweeps from Roman times to 1820, with a cast of characters that includes Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, Attila, Charlemagne, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great, Napoleon and hundreds more. All are seen as the figures historians generally perceive them to have been and as their on-stage counterparts, created and re-imagined by some of opera's greatest artists.

Download or read book Scanderbeide written by Margherita Sarrocchi and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first historical heroic epic authored by a woman, Scanderbeide recounts the exploits of fifteenth-century Albanian warrior-prince George Scanderbeg and his war of resistance against the Ottoman sultanate. Filled with scenes of intense and suspenseful battles contrasted with romantic episodes, Scanderbeide combines the action and fantasy characteristic of the genre with analysis of its characters’ motivations. In selecting a military campaign as her material and epic poetry as her medium, Margherita Sarrocchi (1560?–1617) not only engages in the masculine subjects of political conflict and warfare but also tackles a genre that was, until that point, the sole purview of men. First published posthumously in 1623, Scanderbeide reemerges here in an adroit English prose translation that maintains the suspense of the original text and gives ample context to its rich cultural implications.

Book Events in Sicily

Download or read book Events in Sicily written by Aldo Gelso and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visiting Sicily is stepping on a piece of real estate set by nature in the most desirable part of the Mediterranean Sea. During the frequent days of clear sky, the entire island of Sicily, the white Mount Etna, the mosaics of the Villa Romana, in Piazza Armerina, are among the oldest and most beautiful ancient mosaics in the world. Sicilian arts can be admired in the cathedrals of Montreal, Cefalu, Palermo, and Catania, among many other cities. The various castles of the Ventimiglia in a number of Sicilian towns, and particularly the sumptuous Castle of Castelbuono and the Castle of Enna, the picturesque castle of Pietraperzia, to name a few, are among the most outstanding works of architecture in the world. In each town and locality of Sicily are reminders of history, masterpieces of arts, and beauty of nature. Some towns have as many as a dozen of churches built during various periods, by Sicilians known throughout the world as Italians. In Petralia Soprana, my ancestors’ town, is the Church of Saint Peter and Paul, where, among other magnificent religious arts, is located the first exceptionally admirable wooden crucifix sculpted by the their native sculptor, Gian Francesco Pintorno, also known as Frate Umile. The church was found on the fourteenth century and contains archives with documents dated since its foundation. Thanks to the archpriest Don Calogero la Placa, I found there documents of my ancestors back to the year 1570. Churches like the Saint Peter and Paul of Petralia Soprana are awaiting to be discovered by the world’s tourists in most small and big towns of Sicily; and so are innumerable masterpieces of Sicilian archeology, architectures, arts, literature, folklore, and not to be forgotten, there awaiting are the hospitality and cuisine of the Sicilian people.

Download or read book Refugee Health Care written by Aniyizhai Annamalai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refugee health is growing as an academic medical discipline. More and more health care providers are coming together to exchange research information, educational curricula and social policies related to refugee health. The number of practitioners attending the annual North American Refugee Healthcare Conference has doubled since 2014. Refugees arrive in the United States from different parts of the world. Refugees undergo a medical screening soon after arrival, as recommended by the U.S. Department of State, and it is usually primary care practitioners who usually evaluate these patients at this first visit. Psychiatrists and other specialists may also evaluate them soon after arrival.Though physicians receive a variable amount of training in cross-cultural medicine, virtually none is in the area of refugee evaluations. There are several major ways that the field has changed. U.S. refugee policies and refugee admission numbers have changed dramatically in the past four years as has the epidemiology of medical conditions because the demographics of refugees have changed. The CDC guidelines for domestic screening have also been modified significantly as some of the screening tests are no longer recommended. Protocols have also been updated for presumptive treatment received by refugees before departure to the United States of other countries. A new chapter on end of life care for refugees has been added to the book. Now fully revised and expanded, this second edition reflects the many changes that have occurred in the field of refugee health since 2014. Refugee Health Care remains the definitive resource for primary care physicians and mental health practitioners who see and evaluate refugees. It is also relevant for medical, nursing and public health students involved with refugee health as well as resettlement agency workers and public health officials overseeing refugee care

Book A New Chronology of Venetian Opera and Related Genres 1660 1760

Download or read book A New Chronology of Venetian Opera and Related Genres 1660 1760 written by Eleanor Selfridge-Field and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1637 to the middle of the eighteenth century, Venice was the world center for operatic activity. No exact chronology of the Venetian stage during this period has previously existed in any language. This reference work, the culmination of two decades of research throughout Europe, provides a secure ordering of 800 operas and 650 related works from the period 1660 to 1760. Derived from thousands of manuscript news-sheets and other unpublished materials, the Chronology provides a wealth of new information on about 1500 works. Each entry in this production-based survey provides not only perfunctory reference information but also a synopsis of the text, eyewitness accounts, and pointers to surviving musical scores. What emerges, in addition to secure dates, is a profusion of new information about events, personalities, patronage, and the response of opera to changing political and social dynamics. Appendixes and supplements provide basic information in Venetian history for music, drama, and theater scholars who are not specialists in Italian studies.
