Book Mathematics Into Type

Download or read book Mathematics Into Type written by Ellen Swanson and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition, updated by Arlene O'Sean and Antoinette Schleyer of the American Mathematical Society, brings Ms. Swanson's work up to date, reflecting the more technical reality of publishing today. While it includes information for copy editors, proofreaders, and production staff to do a thorough, traditional copyediting and proofreading of a manuscript and proof copy, it is increasingly more useful to authors, who have become intricately involved with the typesetting of their manuscripts.

Book excerpt: This is the second of two volumes on foliations (the first is Volume 23 of this series). In this volume, three specialized topics are treated: analysis on foliated spaces, characteristic classes of foliations, and foliated three-manifolds. Each of these topics represents deep interaction between foliation theory and another highly developed area of mathematics. In each case, the goal is to provide students and other interested people with a substantial introduction to the topic leading to further study using the extensive available literature.

Book Mathematics and Music

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Wright
  • Publisher : American Mathematical Soc.
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 0821848739
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Mathematics and Music written by David Wright and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2009 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people intuitively sense that there is a connection between mathematics and music. If nothing else, both involve counting. There is, of course, much more to the association. David Wright's book is an investigation of the interrelationships between mathematics and music, reviewing the needed background concepts in each subject as they are encountered. Along the way, readers will augment their understanding of both mathematics and music. The text explores the common foundations of the two subjects, which are developed side by side. Musical and mathematical notions are brought together, such as scales and modular arithmetic, intervals and logarithms, tone and trigonometry, and timbre and harmonic analysis. When possible, discussions of musical and mathematical notions are directly interwoven. Occasionally the discourse dwells for a while on one subject and not the other, but eventually the connection is established, making this an integrative treatment of the two subjects. The book is a text for a freshman level college course suitable for musically inclined or mathematically inclined students, with the intent of breaking down any apprehension that either group might have for the other subject. Exercises are given at the end of each chapter. The mathematical prerequisites are a high-school level familiarity with algebra, trigonometry, functions, and graphs. Musically, the student should have had some exposure to musical staffs, standard clefs, and key signatures, though all of these are explained in the text.

Book Mathematics and Mathematicians

Download or read book Mathematics and Mathematicians written by Lars Gårding and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about mathematics in Sweden between 1630 and 1950 - from S. Klingenstierna to M. Riesz, T. Carleman, and A. Beurling. It tells the story of how continental mathematics came to Sweden, how it was received, and how it inspired new results. The book contains a biography of Gosta Mittag-Leffler, the father of Swedish mathematics, who introduced the Weierstrassian theory of analytic functions and dominated a golden age from 1880 to 1910. Important results are analyzed and re-proved in modern notation, with explanations of their relations to mathematics at the time. The book treats Backlund transformations, Mittag-Leffler's theorem, the Phragmen-Lindelof theorem and Carleman's contributions to the spectral theorem, quantum mechanics, and the asymptotics of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions.

Book Probability

    Book Details:
  • Author : Davar Khoshnevisan
  • Publisher : American Mathematical Soc.
  • Release :
  • ISBN : 9780821884010
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book Probability written by Davar Khoshnevisan and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a textbook for a one-semester graduate course in measure-theoretic probability theory, but with ample material to cover an ordinary year-long course at a more leisurely pace. Khoshnevisan's approach is to develop the ideas that are absolutely central to modern probability theory, and to showcase them by presenting their various applications. As a result, a few of the familiar topics are replaced by interesting non-standard ones. The topics range from undergraduate probability and classical limit theorems to Brownian motion and elements of stochastic calculus. Throughout, the reader will find many exciting applications of probability theory and probabilistic reasoning. There are numerous exercises, ranging from the routine to the very difficult. Each chapter concludes with historical notes.

Book Loving Music Till It Hurts

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Cheng
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2019-10-01
  • ISBN : 0190620145
  • Pages : 409 pages

Download or read book Loving Music Till It Hurts written by William Cheng and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can music feel pain? Do songs possess dignity? Do symphonies have rights? Of course not, you might say. Yet think of how we anthropomorphize music, not least when we believe it has been somehow mistreated. A singer butchered or mangled the "Star-Spangled Banner" at the Super Bowl. An underrehearsed cover band made a mockery of Led Zeppelin's classics. An orchestra didn't quite do justice to Mozart's Requiem. Such lively language upholds music as a sentient companion susceptible to injury and in need of fierce protection. There's nothing wrong with the human instinct to safeguard beloved music . . . except, perhaps, when this instinct leads us to hurt or neglect fellow human beings in turn: say, by heaping outsized shame upon those who seem to do music wrong; or by rushing to defend a conductor's beautiful recordings while failing to defend the multiple victims who have accused this maestro of sexual assault. Loving Music Till It Hurts is a capacious exploration of how people's head-over-heels attachments to music can variously align or conflict with agendas of social justice. How do we respond when loving music and loving people appear to clash?

Book excerpt: This course in real analysis begins with the usual measure theory, then brings the reader quickly to a level where a wider than usual range of topics can be appreciated. Topics covered include Lp- spaces, rearrangement inequalities, sharp integral inequalities, distribution theory, Fourier analysis, potential theory, and Sobolev spaces. To illustrate these topics, there is a chapter on the calculus of variations, with examples from mathematical physics, as well as a chapter on eigenvalue problems (new to this edition). For graduate students of mathematics, and for students of the natural sciences and engineering who want to learn tools of real analysis. Assumes a previous course in calculus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guthrie P. Ramsey, Jr., is an award-winning musicologist, music historian, composer, and pianist whose prescient theoretical and critical interventions have bridged Black cultural studies and musicology. Representing twenty-five years of commentary and scholarship, these essays document Ramsey’s search to understand America's Black musical past and present and to find his own voice as an African American writer in the field of musicology. This far-reaching collection embraces historiography, ethnography, cultural criticism, musical analysis, and autobiography, traversing the landscape of Black musical expression from sacred music to art music, and jazz to hip-hop. Taken together, these essays and the provocative introduction that precedes them are testament to the legacy work that has come to define a field, as well as a rousing call to readers to continue to ask the hard questions and write the hard truths.
