Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Among Central African Tribes This book is the diary kept by Mr. Stephen J. Corey while on a visit to the Congo to inspect one of the most interesting Missions in the world and to report on conditions as he found them. Mr. Corey was an intelligent and sympathetic visitor. He had eyes to see, a mind to appreciate, and literary ability to describe what he saw. He feels as the Roman author did who said that nothing pertaining to humanity was a matter of indifference to him. On his visit Mr. Corey saw much of the people of Central Africa, of their homes and food and clothing and manner of life. He saw how they have been degraded by superstition and polygamy. He spent much time with the missionaries and saw how they do their work. He went with them on the mission steamer far up the tributaries of the Congo, and traveled on foot with them into the interior where no missionary had ever been before. Book Almanac of African Peoples and Nations

Download or read book Almanac of African Peoples and Nations written by Mohamad Yakan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The peoples of Africa are neither ethnically, culturally, nor religiously homogeneous. European colonial powers took little note of this reality in carving up the continent, a fact reflected in the periodic outbreak of civil war since decolonialization. Likewise, Western European models of development, whether in their liberal or Marxist manifestations, have so far failed to meet African development needs. The path to stability in Africa is through its people's character and goals. Almanac of African Peoples and Nations provides an essential guide to the major ethnic groups of the African continent, highlighting the major contributions and basic features of each. The Almanac reviews Africa's language families and their respective national and geographic concentrations, explaining ethnic classification based on linguistic difference and including language groups that are not indigenous to Africa. The major African peoples are then listed by country with a statistical breakdown on their respective shares in the total population of each country and maps indicating their concentration. The major section of the volume includes a comprehensive listing and descriptive profile of each ethnic, national, and tribal group detailing their history, customs, economic systems, and political and social organizations. The Almanac points out as well which groups support revisionist political aspirations and shows the internal and external pressures they are subject to. Yakan notes that African societies are not highly integrated and must support multitudes of influential sub-cultures with conflicting agendas and loyalties. Arguing that tribalism reflects Africa's historical experience and cultural heritage, he sees the resolution of the continent's problems in consociational democracy, proportional representation, federalism, or some form of autonomous rule.

Book The Northern Bantu

Download or read book The Northern Bantu written by John Roscoe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Northern Bantu: An Account of Some Central African, Tribes of the Uganda Protectorate In a former work I described at some length the Baganda, the most advanced and most powerful Bantu tribe of Central Africa: in the present work I give a more summary account of some other important and far less known Bantu tribes in the Uganda Protectorate. Like its predecessor, this volume is based on observations made and notes taken by me during the many years when I resided in Central Africa in the service of the Church Missionary Society. Being stationed at Mengo, the capital of Uganda, I naturally had most facilities for acquainting myself with the Baganda, among whom I lived; but even at Mengo I enjoyed many opportunities for acquiring a knowledge of other tribes of the Protectorate, and I availed myself of my vacations to visit them in their own countries and investigate their customs and beliefs by personal converse with the natives. My acquaintance with the Bantu languages enabled me in every case to dispense with an interpreter: all the information concerning Bantu tribes presented to the reader in this, as in my former, volume was obtained at first hand from the people in their own language. Yet I am well aware that the account which I have given of these tribes, other than the Baganda, is fragmentary and incomplete: the short time which I could devote to the study in my vacations precluded the possibility of a thorough investigation. Book State of Rebellion

Download or read book State of Rebellion written by Louisa Lombard and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Fage and Oliver Prize 2018 In 2013, the Central African Republic was engulfed by violence. In the face of the rapid spread of the conflict, journalists, politicians, and academics alike have struggled to account for its origins. In this first comprehensive account of the country’s recent upheaval, Louisa Lombard shows the limits of the superficial explanations offered thus far – that the violence has been due to a religious divide, or politicians’ manipulations, or profiteering. Instead, she shows that conflict has long been useful to Central African politics, a tendency that has been exacerbated by the international community’s method of engagement with so-called fragile states. Furthermore, changing this state of affairs will require rethinking the relationships of all those present – rebel groups and politicians, as well as international interveners and diplomats. An urgent insight into this little-understood country and the problems with peacebuilding more broadly.
