Book Sky Dance of the Woodcock

Download or read book Sky Dance of the Woodcock written by Greg Hoch and published by Bureau Oak Book. This book was released on 2019-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woodcock are one of the oddest birds in North America. They are a shorebird that got lost and ended up in the scrubby parts of the forest, and look like they were put together with the leftover parts of other birds. Oddities aside, each spring they rise to great beauty with their sky dance at dusk. Greg Hoch combines natural history, land management, scientific knowledge, and personal observation to examine this little game bird. Woodcock have a complex life history and the management of their habitat is also complex. The health of this bird can be considered a key indicator of what good forests look like.

Book The Technical Literature on the American Woodcock 1927 1978

Download or read book The Technical Literature on the American Woodcock 1927 1978 written by Thomas J. Dwyer and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this bibliography we have attempted to assemble the major portion of the technical literature on the American woodcock (Philohela minor). Included are scientific references published between 1927 and 1978. We chose 1927 as the cutoff date for early literature because of the importance of Arthur Cleveland Bent's work in 1927, and because most articles before 1927 are descriptive and do not add appreciably to the scientific literature on the species. An excellent listing of the early literature may be found in the 1936 monograph by Olin Sewall Pettingill, Jr. No previously published bibliography devoted solely to woodcock is available. References are listed alphabetically by author beginning on page 1. Following each reference is a number(s) that corresponds to one of the 22 subject headings listed on page iii.

  • Author : Michael O'Brien
  • Publisher : Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9780618432943
  • Pages : 500 pages

Download or read book The Shorebird Guide written by Michael O'Brien and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2006 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When many birders go out looking at shorebirds, they see a distant mud flat full of grayish brown birds in various shapes and sizes and have no idea where to begin the identification process. When advanced birders look at that same flock of shorebirds, they can identify the vast majority of birds with a quick binocular scan. Experts use the simplest, most easily observed characteristics--size, structure, behavior, and general color patterns--almost subconsciously, and can identify most birds even before looking carefully at plumage details. Now birders of all levels can learn how to identify these wildly popular birds quickly and with much less effort. This guide provides more than 870 stunning color photographs, sequenced to give a general impression of a species first and progressing to a more detailed image of the bird throughout its life cycle. Captions list characteristics in order of importance, reflecting the thought process that experts use to identify birds.

Book excerpt: This antiquarian book contains a fascinating treatise on the woodcock, and includes information on its natural history, habit and habitats, how to find and hunt them, and much more. This informative and practical book is highly recommended for those with an interest in hunting woodcock, and it would also make for a great addition to collections of hunting literature. The chapters of this book include: “Opening Days”, “Characteristics and Habits”, “The Yearly Cycle”, “Migrations and Flights”, “Banding Operations”, “Fight for Survival”, “Woodcock Cover”, “Hunting Equipment”, “Dogs and Guns”, “Hunting Methods”, “The W. D. A.”, etcetera. Many antiquarian books such as this are increasingly hard to come by and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new introduction on ornithology.

Book Habitat Characteristics Associated with American Woodcock scolopax Minor Nests in Central Kentucky

Download or read book Habitat Characteristics Associated with American Woodcock scolopax Minor Nests in Central Kentucky written by David Brian Harris and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American woodcock (Scolopax minor) is a webless migratory game bird found from the Gulf of Mexico to mid-Canada and from the Rocky Mountains eastward to the Atlantic coast. In the last decade woodcock populations have shown a long-term decline in numbers. Most woodcock research has taken place in the northern portions of the bird's range, with practically no investigations conducted in Kentucky. The objective of my study was to determine what habitat characteristics woodcock prefer for nest sites in central Kentucky. Study areas included the Blue Grass Army Depot and Central Kentucky Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Madison County, and Clay WMA in Nicholas County, KY.
