Book American Waterfalls

  • Author : Thomas Berger
  • Publisher : CreateSpace

  • ISBN : 9781490544281
  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book American Waterfalls written by Thomas Berger and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone has at least one passion. One of my passions is waterfalls, and I have written and composed this book that reviews my personal journeys to 100 waterfalls in 26 states. The waterfalls are grouped by type of waterfall and separated into eight chapters. Thunderous waters, bridal veil falls and mossy greens are a few examples of how waterfalls in different regions of the United States can have similar qualities. Rather than being a regional guidebook explaining how to get to a waterfall, this book is national in scope and describes the experience of visiting each waterfall, from the parking lot to the point around the bend where one first hears rushing water. The United States of America is a large country, and it is difficult to view in its entirety without either significant time for a road trip or access to flight. However, over time, individuals and families will have opportunities to visit different parts of the USA, often seeing our wonderful National and State Parks on a vacation or on a business trip. During those times there will be opportunities to view some of America's great waterfalls. The development of the book has been an organic process over a 15 year time span through my visitation and enjoyment of numerous parks.

Book Fixing Niagara Falls

Download or read book Fixing Niagara Falls written by Daniel Macfarlane and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late nineteenth century, Niagara Falls has been heavily engineered to generate energy behind a flowing façade designed to appeal to tourists. Fixing Niagara Falls reveals the technological feats and cross-border politics that facilitated the transformation of one of the most important natural sites in North America. Daniel Macfarlane shows how this natural wonder is essentially a tap: huge tunnels around the reconfigured Falls channel the waters of the Niagara River, which ebb and flow according to the tourism calendar. This book offers a unique interdisciplinary and transborder perspective on how the Niagara landscape embodies the power of technology and nature.

Book excerpt: *Includes pictures *Includes historic descriptions of Niagara Falls written over the centuries *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "All trembling, I reached the Falls of Niagara, and oh, what a scene! My blood shudders still, although I am not a coward, at the grandeur of the Creator's power; and I gazed motionless on this new display of the irresistible force of one of His elements." - John James Audubon "It's Niagara Falls. It's one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the world. Who wouldn't want to walk across it?" - Nik Wallenda North America is full of natural wonders, but few inspire as much awe as Niagara Falls, the continent's most famous waterfalls. Comprised of three separate waterfalls (Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls), Niagara's falls can boast of the fastest flow rate in the world, dropping 6 million cubic feet of water every minute from as high as 185 feet. Situated on the border between the United States and Canada, Niagara Falls is not just a prime tourist spot but a source of hydroelectric power that attracted scientists like Nikola Tesla who hoped to harness the waterfalls' energy. In fact, Niagara Falls is so powerful that it is eroding the ground under it, to the extent that it will cease to exist in about 50,000 years. Niagara Falls is a byproduct of glaciers receding about 10,000 years ago, and it has been amazing people for as long as the area has been inhabited. It's widely believed Niagara is a word derived from the Mohawk tribe, but the most famous people now associated with the waterfalls are those who have dared to ride down the falls one way or another. The falls have seen both amateurs and professional stuntmen ride over it in barrels, some successfully and others fatally, and a local museum has even preserved some of the barrels used in the attempts. Just as daringly, others have tried to walk tightropes across the falls. Niagara Falls: The History of North America's Most Famous Waterfalls traces the history of the region and its establishment as a park. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Yosemite like never before, in no time at all.

Book The Silver Waterfall

  • Author : Brendan Simms
  • Publisher : Public Affairs

  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book The Silver Waterfall written by Brendan Simms and published by Public Affairs. This book was released on 2022 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid new history of the Battle of Midway that transforms our understanding of the iconic turning point of the Second World War. The stunning and decisive battle of Midway was perhaps the most crucial naval battle in the Pacific theater during World War II. Walter Lord explained away the US victory at Midway against a numerically superior and apparently more skilled Japanese fleet due to 'Lady Luck.' In The Silver Waterfall acclaimed historian Brendan Simms and historian and military veteran Steve McGregor show it was no such thing. Luck had little to do with it. Instead the authors show how the forces of industrial dynamism and innovation were central to the US being able to win the war in the Pacific. Engineers, machinists, test pilots, and a willingness to experiment at scale were vital to the creation of the decisive element that would sink the hopes of Japan along with the pride of their aircraft carrier fleet: the Douglas Dauntless Dive Bomber dive bomber, whose vicious near vertical plummet from the sky to deliver a brutally accurate attack was the "silver waterfall" that the Japanese quickly came to dread. In a few deadly minutes they changed the course of the war in the Pacific. Equally important, the Navy drew on the skills of a wide variety of immigrants or descendants of immigrants--especially those from Germany, the principal hostile power. The engineer who designed the plane which decided the Battle of Midway was Ed Heinemann, the strategist who decided America would defend Midway Island was Chester Nimitz; and the pilot who symbolized American performance on the day was Dusty Kleiss. Without these men, America could not have designed, planned, or done what was needed to win. The Silver Waterfall offers a revelatory new history of Midway, showing that if the Americans were lucky, they made their own luck.

The intention has been to make the book not only a work of reference, but a work of art and of interest as well, and it is burdened neither with too much statistics nor too intricate prolixity of description. It covers the Continent of North America, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian Dominion and Alaska. It has been prepared mainly from notes specially taken by the author during many years of extended travel all over the United States and Canada.
