Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Slave Code, in Theory and Practice: Its Distinctive Features Shown by Its Statutes, Judicial Decisions and Illustrative Facts It is Often maintained that the legal. Relation of master and slave is not a criminal one, and that there is no sin or moral wrong in the mere fact of sustaining that rela tion. On the other hand, it is held that the relation is wrong in itself, and cannot be innocently sustained. Such a question cannot, intelligently, be settled without a correct understanding Of that legal relation, and of the particulars in which it consists. And it is only by the Slave Code Of the country that the legal relation can be ascertained. By this, and by this only, is it to be defined. The legal relation of master and slave is what the Slave Code declares it to be. And it is nothing else. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The journalism and personal writings of the great American abolitionist and reformer Frederick Douglass Launching the fourth series of The Frederick Douglass Papers, designed to introduce readers to the broadest range of Frederick Douglass's writing, this volume contains sixty-seven pieces by Douglass, including articles written for North American Review and the New York Independent, as well as unpublished poems, book transcriptions, and travel diaries. Spanning from the 1840s to the 1890s, the documents reproduced in this volume demonstrate how Douglass's writing evolved over the five decades of his public life. Where his writing for publication was concerned mostly with antislavery advocacy, his unpublished works give readers a glimpse into his religious and personal reflections. The writings are organized chronologically and accompanied by annotations offering biographical information as well as explanations of events mentioned and literary or historical allusions.

Book The Routledge History of Police Brutality in America

Download or read book The Routledge History of Police Brutality in America written by Thomas Aiello and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-11 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook offers a comprehensive historical overview and analysis of police brutality in US history and the variety of ways it has manifested itself. Police brutality has been a defining controversy of the modern age, brought into focus most readily by the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the mass protests that occurred as a result in 2020. However, the problem of police brutality has been consistent throughout American history. This volume traces its history back to Antebellum slavery, through the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era, the two world wars and the twentieth century, to the present day. This handbook is designed to create a generally holistic picture of the phenomenon of police brutality in the United States in all of its major lived forms and confronts a wide range of topics including: Race Ethnicity Gender Police reactions to protest movements (particularly as they relate to the counterculture and opposition to the Vietnam War) Legal and legislative outgrowths against police brutality The representations of police brutality in popular culture forms like film and music The role of technology in publicizing such abuses, and the protest movements mounted against it The Routledge History of Police Brutality in America will provide a vital reference work for students and scholars of American history, African American history, criminal justice, sociology, anthropology, and Africana studies.
