Book A Conceptual History of Psychology

Download or read book A Conceptual History of Psychology written by John D. Greenwood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the new edition of this original and penetrating book, John D. Greenwood provides an in-depth analysis of the subtle conceptual continuities and discontinuities that inform the history of psychology from the speculations of the Ancient Greeks to contemporary cognitive psychology. He also demonstrates the fashion in which different conceptions of human and animal psychology and behavior have become associated and disassociated over the centuries. Moving easily among psychology, history of science, physiology, and philosophy, Greenwood provides a critically challenging account of the development of psychology as a science. He relates the remarkable stories of the intellectual pioneers of modern psychology, while exploring the social and political milieu in which they operated, and dispels many of the myths of the history of psychology, based upon the best historical scholarship of recent decades. This is an impressive overview that will appeal to scholars and graduate students of the history of psychology.

Book Social Controversy and Public Address in the 1960s and Early 1970s

Download or read book Social Controversy and Public Address in the 1960s and Early 1970s written by Richard J. Jensen and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period between the 1960s and 1970s is easily one of the most controversial in American history. Examining the liberal movements of the era as well as those that opposed them, this volume offers analyses of the rhetoric of leaders, including those of the civil rights movement, the Chicano movement, the gay rights movement, second-wave feminism, and conservative resistance groups. It also features an introduction that summarizes much of the significant research done by communication scholars on dissent in the 1960s and 1970s. This time period is still a fertile area of study, and this book provides insights into the era that are both provocative and illuminating, making it an essential read for anyone looking to learn more about this time in America.

Book Even the Rat was White

Download or read book Even the Rat was White written by Robert V. Guthrie and published by Pearson. This book was released on 2004 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic edition of Even the Rat Was White presents a history of prejudice within the field of Social Psychology--now at a more affordable cost! Even the Rat Was White views history from all perspectives in the quest for historical accuracy. Histories and other background materials are presented in detail concerning early African-American psychologists and their scientific contributions, as well as their problems, views, and concerns of the field of social psychology. Archival documents that are not often found in mainstream resources are uncovered through the use of journals and magazines, such as the Journal of Black Psychology, the Journal of Negro Education, and Crisis. The text is divided into three parts. Part I, "Psychology and Racial Differences," expands and updates historical materials that helped form racial stereotypes and negative views towards African-Americans. Part II, "Psychology and Psychologists," is updated with specifics of what and how psychology was taught in the pre-1970 Black colleges, and brings forward the contributions of Black psychologists. Part III, "Conclusion," discusses the implication of the previous chapters and the impact of new historical information on the field of psychology.

Book Clinical Psychology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sol L. Garfield
  • Publisher : Transaction Publishers
  • Release : 2007-12-01
  • ISBN : 0202364909
  • Pages : 474 pages

Download or read book Clinical Psychology written by Sol L. Garfield and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in clinical psychology has been growing as indicated by large numbers of undergraduates applying for admission to graduate programs and the professional degrees granted. This book is written for anyone with a strong interest in clinical psychology, but also provides a comprehensive and realistic view of the field. The book, therefore, can serve as a reference for courses in clinical psychology, but it will be relevant to courses in personality and personal counseling. Professional clinical psychologists and members of related professions may also find the book valuable because Garfield describes important historical developments that have helped to shape the field, the roles and functions of the clinical psychologist, their training programs, and contemporary issues and problems. The text also describes the theoretical models that guide the work of the clinical psychologist and upon which the divergent approaches to clinical work are based. Changes in the functions of the clinical psychologist are reflected in the greater emphasis on psychotherapeutic and behavior change methods and in the correspondingly reduced emphasis on diagnostic testing procedures--a development discernible in the decline in studies of high quality bearing on diagnostic issues. This book provides a reliable source of information for the individual who contemplates a professional career as a clinical psychologist and seeks to learn what the profession encompasses. Sol L. Garfield (1918-2004) was Professor of Psychology and Director, Clinical Psychology Program, Washington University in St. Louis. Garfield has been widely published in the major journals and his books include Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change (co-edited with A. E. Bergin) and The Practice of Brief Psychotherapy. He is a former President of the Division of Clinical Psychology, American Psychological Association, and has been Consulting Editor for the American Journal of Mental Deficiency, the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, and the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

Book Historical Foundations of Educational Psychology

Download or read book Historical Foundations of Educational Psychology written by John A. Glover and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a beginning effort to compile a history of educational psychology The project began, innocuously enough, several years ago when we decided to add mon material about the history of educational psychology to the undergraduate course we were teaching. What seemed like a simple task became very complex as we searched in vain for a volume dealing with the topic. We ended up drawing on various histories of psychology that devoted anywhere from a few paragraphs to several pages to the topic and on a very few articles addressing the issue. We were startled, frankly, by the apparent lack of interest in the history of our field and decided to attempt to compile a history ourselves. As is the case with any edited volume, the contributing authors deserve credit for its positive features. They uniformly made every effort asked of them and taught us much about educational psychology. Any errors or omissions are our responsibility alone.
