Download or read book American Inventions and Inventors Classic Reprint written by William A Mowry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Inventions and Inventors While we watch the steamer glide around Castle Garden into East River, evening begins to come on; we must hasten uptown. As we pass along Broadway, lights flash out in the darkness and our thoughts are again turned to fire and steam. We have heard that the source of the electric light is in the dynamo, and that steam power is used to turn that great machine. The enormous engine, the mammoth boat, the brilliant light - all need the power of steam, and nothing but fire will produce this steam. What, then, is fire? And is its only use that of changing quiet, liquid water into powerful steam? Let us see. Did you notice that machine shop which we passed when we were in Cleveland a few days ago? Did you see those furnaces with the huge volumes of flame bursting out of the open doors? You know that great heat is necessary to make tools and other implements of iron, and all the instruments of everyday life that are formed out of metals. Our pens and needles, our hoes and rakes, our horseshoes, our stoves and furnaces, our registers and the iron of our desks - all de pend upon heat for their production. Fire can do much for us. To change water into steam is but one of its powers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: American Inventions And Inventors This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men of Achievement: Inventors With the many and superb tools now at our service, of which our fathers knew comparatively nothing - steam, electricity, the telegraph, tele phone, phonograph, and the camera - we and our descendants ought to accomplish even greater wonders than these./ As invention thus rises in the scale of importance to humanity, the history of the pioneers and, to the shame of mankind be it said, the martyrs of the art, becomes of in tense interest. In the annals of hero-worship the inventor of the perfecting press ought to stand before the great general, and Elias Howe should rank before Napoleon. Whitney, Howe, Morse, and Goodyear, to mention but a few of our Americans, contributed thousands of millions of dollars to the nation's wealth and received com paratively nothing in return. Their history sug gests as pertinent the inquiry whether our patent laws do not need a radical change. The bur den and cost of proving that an invention de serves no protection ought to fall upon who ever infringes a patent granted by the Govern ment. At present it is all the other way. Book Leading American Inventors Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Leading American Inventors Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by George Iles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leading American Inventors, Vol. 1 Within its twelve chapters this book presents a group of leading American inventors of the past. First in time, and, in many respects, first in talent, is Colonel John Stevens, who built a successful screw propeller, and who devised a sectional boiler of a model which, duly modified, is in wide use to - day. Beside him stands his son Robert, who devised the T-rail and much other equipment for railroads and work shops. Fulton comes next with his Clermont and his tor pedoes, an inventor with a statesman's breadth of mind, with the outlook of an artist no less than that of an engineer. The mastery of land and sea is continued by Ericsson with his Novelty locomotive, his Monitor, and his caloric engine. These four great engineers are succeeded by four mechanics, each the leader of an industrial revolution. First Whitney, with his cotton - gin; then Blanchard, with his copying lathe; mccormick, with his reaper; Howe, with his sewing machine. Then, all alone, stands Charles Goodyear, who came to the vulcanization of rubber by dint of a courage unsurpassed in the annals of peace or war. A final quartette are inventors who broadened the empire of the printed word Morse, who gave electricity a pencil to write its messages a thousand miles away; Tilghman, who derived paper from wood so as to create a new basic industry for mankind; Sholes, who built a typewriter to replace the pen with the legibility and swiftness of printing; and last of all, Mer genthaler, who took a Sholes keyboard, and bade it com pose both the columns of newspapers and the pages of a book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chronicles of America Series, Vol. 37 This volume is not intended to be a complete record of inventive genius and mechanical progress in the United States. A bare catalogue of notable American inventions in the nineteenth century alone could not be compressed into these pages. Nor is it any part of the purpose of this book to trespass on the ground of the many mechanical works and encyclopedias which give technical descriptions and explain in detail the principle of every invention. All this book seeks to do is to outline the personalities of some of the outstanding American inventors and indicate the significance of their achievements.
