Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soviet Union's first successful atomic bomb detonation in August 1949 was a wakeup call for US Navy planners. The possibility of a single Soviet aircraft wiping out an entire convoy of merchant ships with a nuclear weapon had suddenly become very real. With military budgets having shrunk prior to the Korean War, it was simply not possible to provide a US Navy escort for every convoy. But what if those vessels could be provided with an effective means of self-defence - an aircraft able to function as both a helicopter and a fighter, launching from and landing on the small deck of a Liberty Ship? It was a risky concept but aviation technology was now advancing at an unprecedented pace and the American aircraft manufacturers were ready to meet the challenge head on. The result was the US Navy's Convoy Fighter competition of November 1950 - a contest to produce a turboprop-powered 'tailsitter' single-seat aircraft able to operate from a largely unmodified merchant vessel. A host of designs were submitted by the likes of Convair, Lockheed, Martin and Northrop, among them some of the strangest and most outlandish concept aircraft ever committed to paper. And two were actually built in prototype form: the Convair XFY-1 'Pogo' and the Lockheed XFV-1. In American Interceptor: US Navy Convoy Fighter Projects, author and illustrator Jared A. Zichek focuses on the 'paper projects', the unbuilt studies submitted to the Navy. Lavishly illustrated throughout, the book showcases these fascinating artifacts of what might have been, from a golden age of aerospace history unlikely to be equalled or exceeded.

Book American Secret Projects

Download or read book American Secret Projects written by Tony Buttler and published by Midland Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Secret Projects series is now well established with both aviation historians and modelers. American Secret Projects: Bombers, Attack and Anti-Submarine Aircraft 19451974 describes the important area of post-World War 2 bomber development in the United States. During the period to the 1970s, the U.S Air Force operated several classes of bomber-heavy long-range types for strategic operations, medium bombers, and fighter bombers for interdiction and ground support. The U.S. Navy had its own series of attack aircraft and bombers for delivering nuclear weapons, while the antisubmarine aircraft was another area to be examined in considerable depth. As a superpower, America was also able to look at some of the more unusual approaches in the creative process, for example, bombers propelled by nuclear propulsion. Many of the aircraft that entered service or flew only as prototypes resulted from design competitions involving many other proposals that for one reason or another, never left the drawing board.

Book Xf 103 Mach 3 Stratospheric Interceptor Concept

Download or read book Xf 103 Mach 3 Stratospheric Interceptor Concept written by Hugh Harkins and published by Centurion Publishing. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Republic XF-103Conceived in the late 1940's as a high speed, high altitude air defence interceptor and developed through the 1950's as a Mach 3 interceptor capable of operating against Soviet strategic bombers in stratosphere and possibly extending toward the mesosphere, the Republic XF-103 (Model AP-57) was an unsuccessful entrant in the USAF MX-1554 competition that fielded the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger interceptor. Post-MX-1554, the XF-103 took on the mantle of a research program to prove technologies applicable to a future generation mid-supersonic - Mach 3 - interceptor. However, like the later North American F-108 Mach 3 interceptor concept, the XF-103 was ultimately doomed due to cost and a looming redundancy facilitated by a shifting strategic threat in the shape of the intercontinental ballistic missile, which was in its infancy when the XF-103 program was cancelled in 1959.This volume looks at the genesis and development of the various iterations of the Republic XF-103 from program inception through cancellation in 1959. The volume is supported by photographs, technical drawings, renderings and planned performance charts from the contractor and intended operator. There is a deliberate switch from metric measurements to the fore and imperial measurements secondary in chapter one to imperial to the fore and metric secondary in subsequent chapters. This has been done to ensure 100% accuracy in primary measurement reporting from respective designer/test organisations, whereas secondary measurements may, at times, be rounded to the nearest cm or kg.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 Missile Defense Review - January 2019 According to a senior administration official, a number of new technologies are highlighted in the report. The review looks at "the comprehensive environment the United States faces, and our allies and partners face. It does posture forces to be prepared for capabilities that currently exist and that we anticipate in the future." The report calls for major investments from both new technologies and existing systems. This is a very important and insightful report because many of the cost assessments for these technologies in the past, which concluded they were too expensive, are no longer applicable. Book 60 337th Fighter Interceptor Squadron

Download or read book 60 337th Fighter Interceptor Squadron written by Stan Lukasiewicz and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2006-11-19 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a portion of the 20th century known as the Cold War Era, when the United States feared an attack on its land, our armed forces kept a 24-hour vigil to meet any armed aggression against us. A part of this vigil involved the United States Air Force keeping fighter interceptor squadrons on alert at all times, with a certain amount of aircraft poised in alert hangars, fully armed and ready to launch within five-minutes from the sound of the alarm. This history is about one such squadron, the 60th/337th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron assigned to Westover Air Force Base, Chicopee, Massachusetts. Its task was to guard a specific area of airspace in the northeast from an airborne attack. Their object was to destroy any enemy bombers penetrating U.S. airspace that was assigned to the squadron. The Air Force assigned the newest ‘all-weather’ interceptor, the F-86D Sabrejet, to the 60th in May 1953. Sometime in mid-1956 the squadron began receiving a more advanced version of the Sabrejet known as the F-86L. In 1958, the squadron converted to the fastest interceptor in the U.S. arsenal, the F-104 Starfighter, which they flew until the unit was deactivated in July 1960. You will follow the events of this fighter squadron from May 1953 until its last F-104 departed in June 1960. It tells the stories of the unit’s accomplishments, tragedies that befell the squadron, the personal reflections and feelings of some of the members, some eventful sporting news, a few social events that occurred, and the public relations work involved in helping the civilian population in the surrounding communities to better understand the importance of the mission of the fighter squadron, and the significance it had on the civilian population.

Book World s Fastest Single engine Jet Aircraft

Download or read book World s Fastest Single engine Jet Aircraft written by Douglas Barbier and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed for the Air Force in the early 1950s as a next-generation interceptor following Convair's pioneering delta-wing F-102, the F-106 excelled in every aspect of the Air Defense Command mission. With its advanced Hughes radar system, Falcon air-to-air missiles, and a top speed in excess of Mach 2, the Delta Dart became known as "the ultimate interceptor," able to scramble, launch, find its targets, and blow them out of the sky. The 'Dart was also the lightest-weight aircraft ever powered by a Pratt & Whitney J75 turbojet. This book provides an insightful and in-depth look at the sixth member of the Air Force "Century Series" family of supersonic fighters. From initial concept through early flight test and development and into operational service, every facet of the F-106's career is examined and explained in comprehensive, yet easy-to-read text. All USAF Air Defense Command units that operated F-106s are covered, and aircraft markings and color schemes are included as well. The Convair F-106 remains to this day as one of the most successful military aircraft ever built. This book now gives the reader a thorough and meticulous reference source on the F-106 using excellent photographs and technical illustrations to tell the story of this history-making aircraft, while also providing valuable detailed information for modelers and historians.
