Book Native American Freemasonry

Download or read book Native American Freemasonry written by Joy Porter and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freemasonry has played a significant role in the history of Native Americans since the colonial era—a role whose extent and meaning are fully explored for the first time in this book. The overarching concern of Native American Freemasonry is with how Masonry met specific social and personal needs of Native Americans, a theme developed across three periods: the revolutionary era, the last third of the nineteenth century, and the years following the First World War. Joy Porter positions Freemasonry within its historical context, examining its social and political impact as a transatlantic phenomenon at the heart of the colonizing process. She then explores its meaning for many key Native leaders, for ethnic groups that sought to make connections through it, and for the bulk of its American membership—the white Anglo-Saxon Protestant middle class. Through research gleaned from archives in New York, Philadelphia, Oklahoma, California, and London, Porter shows how Freemasonry’s performance of ritual provided an accessible point of entry to Native Americans and how over time, Freemasonry became a significant avenue for the exchange and co-creation of cultural forms by Indians and non-Indians.

Book Indian Masonry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Indian Masonry Classic Reprint written by Robert C. Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Masonry This work is fraternally dedicated to you. In your kindly charge it is placed, hoping that when it has been measured by the plumb, square and level, it will be found good work, true work, square work, and just such work as you need and may pass to be used in the building up of the real Masonic structure. The field of study among the aboriginal races of the new world is intensely interesting, and so much so that the author would fain do more and more in that field, could he have the time at his disposal, for he firmly believes that the Craft of this country owes it to itself to have this work done. He also believes that facts may yet be found out there, which will make our Masonry look like a Broadway store building beside an old Egyptian temple. Astonishing and curious things of the past not only fascinate and inter est, but lure one on to seek to dispel the shadows cast about them and to view them in the light by which those people worked. Download or read book Native American Freemasonry written by Joy Porter and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freemasonry has played a significant role in the history of Native Americans since the colonial era?a role whose extent and meaning are fully explored for the first time in this book. The work?s overarching concern is with how Masonry met specific social and personal needs, a theme developed across three significant periods of membership: the revolutionary era, the last third of the nineteenth century, and the years following the First World War. Joy Porter places Freemasonry into historical context, revealing its social and political impact as a transatlantic phenomenon at the heart of the colonizing process. She then explores its meaning for many of the key Native leaders over time, for the ethnic groups who sought to make connections with it, and for the bulk of its American membership?the white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant middle class. Porter contends that Freemasonry offered special access to Native Americans through its performance of ritual, an assertion borne out by a wealth of contemporary manuscripts, newspapers, pamphlets, Masonic sermons, orations, and lodge records and writings by Masonic historians and antiquarians gleaned from archives in New York, Philadelphia, Oklahoma, California, and London. Through these documents, she demonstrates that over time, Freemasonry became a significant avenue for the exchange, and perhaps even cocreation, of cultural forms by Indians and non-Indians.

Book The Mysteries of Masonry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mysteries of Masonry: Being the Outline of an Universal Philosophy Founded Upon the Ritual and Degrees of Ancient Freemasonry As the earth is cold in winter, but revives nu der the genial sun of spring, bringing forth her love flowers as a token of divine favor; so the heart, when chilled by self-love, is a dreary waste, and darkness is upon the face of the deep. But when the heavenly Spirit of charity moves upon the waters, the heart is warmed, and the under standing is illuminated by a divine light. A thousand principles of latent truth spring forth to quicken and elevate the imagination to view, with reverence and awe, the unfoldings of those principles handed down to us through the golden age of man, concealed in correspondential sem blances, locked like a precious casket, and sealed with seven seals, which the Divine Hand will only open to a loving heart and faithful breast.
