Book American History and Civics Classic Reprint

Download or read book American History and Civics Classic Reprint written by P. F. Valentine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American History and Civics An accurate knowledge of the chronology of important facts and events will be considered essential; but by chronology we do not mean dates, except in a few specified cases: we mean sequence - the order of events, so to speak - and the historic period to which the events belong. To facilitate this chronology the General Outline has been divided into periods, each representing some definite era in the development of the nation. In addition to the General Outline, a number of specific items, under the head, Items of General Intelligence, are presented. These represent a minimum summary of miscellaneous facts of common knowledge in American history. They are the every-day used facts, and are couse quently of prime importance. The student should possess a knowledge of all these facts to the extent indicated. The story of territorial growth and the expansion of settlement is a narrative of inspiring and patriotic interest that every teacher and every citizen should know. The mere elements of this story are included in the General Outline; but to facilitate its study as a distinct phase of our history, a separate outline is given. For entrance to the Normal School, no minute and judicial knowledge of the subject will be required. What we want is a possession of the simple facts of territorial acquisition and growth, coupled with the ability to tell the dramatic, soul-stirring, supremely human epic of the people in their surging westward march. Book Teaching America

  • Author : David Feith
  • Publisher : R&L Education
  • Release : 2011-09-16
  • ISBN : 1607098407
  • Pages : 259 pages

Download or read book Teaching America written by David Feith and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Teaching America, more than 20 leading thinkers sound the alarm over a crisis in citizenship--and lay out a powerful agenda for reform. The book's unprecedented roster of authors includes Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Senator Jon Kyl, Senator Bob Graham, Secretary Rod Paige, Alan Dershowitz, Juan Williams, Glenn Reynolds, Michael Kazin, Frederick Hess, Andrew Rotherham, Mike Feinberg, Seth Andrew, Mark Bauerlein and more. Their message: To remain America, our country has to give its kids a civic identity, an understanding of our constitutional system, and some appreciation of the amazing achievements of American self-government. But we are failing. Young Americans know little about the Bill of Rights, the democratic process, or the civil rights movement. Three of every four high school seniors aren't proficient in civics, nine of ten can't cut it in U.S. history, and the problem is only aggravated by universities' disregard for civic education. Such civic illiteracy weakens our common culture, disenfranchises would-be voters, and helps poison our politics.

Although relatively few men and women make a living from studying, explaining, or teaching its principles, economics affects every human being on a daily basis. Why do some people struggle just to survive, while others live in luxury? Is a free-market economy really better than a command economy? What makes certain items more valuable than others? Every lesson provides real-life situations and opportunities for the student to use the knowledge they are acquiring in unique and memorable ways. Practical & Foundational Economics emphasizes critical-thinking skills and evaluation of historical and contemporary economic events. It strikes a balance between success in this life and the wisdom of investing in things of eternal value. Download or read book Emancipation Betrayed written by Paul Ortiz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Paul Ortiz's lyrical and closely argued study introduces us to unknown generations of freedom fighters for whom organizing democratically became in every sense a way of life. Ortiz changes the very ways we think of Southern history as he shows in marvelous detail how Black Floridians came together to defend themselves in the face of terror, to bury their dead, to challenge Jim Crow, to vote, and to dream."—David R. Roediger, author of Colored White: Transcending the Racial Past “Emancipation Betrayed is a remarkable piece of work, a tightly argued, meticulously researched examination of the first statewide movement by African Americans for civil rights, a movement which since has been effectively erased from our collective memory. The book poses a profound challenge to our understanding of the limits and possibilities of African American resistance in the early twentieth century. This analysis of how a politically and economically marginalized community nurtures the capacity for struggle speaks as much to our time as to 1919.”—Charles Payne, author of I’ve Got the Light of Freedom
