This book was inspired by the life and writings of St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622), and written for the Sisters of the Visitation monastery of Faubourg Saint-Jacques in Paris, where Gambart, a Vincentian priest, served as chaplain for over thirty years. It was published in preparation for Francis's canonization in 1665." "Stopp's study offers an English translation of the key observations made by Gambart about each of the fifty-two emblems, while the facsimile makes available Gambarts original French text. Moreover, the facsimile is reproduced in color in order to convey the tonal richness of the original emblems."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: A bold expression of a fledgling republic's aspirations and bravado, the American bald eagle has been designed, drawn, illustrated, stamped, engraved, painted, sculpted, carved, photographed, and etched by thousands of artists and artisans since 1782, when it first appeared as the central figure on the Great Seal of the United States. As America's most versatile emblem, the eagle emanates confidence during peace and prosperity, and strength during crisis and war; as a North American native species it exemplifies nature's grandeur and the advance of conservation. In all, the bald eagle is a stirring national symbol made all the more vibrant by its indisputable dominion in the sky. American Eagle: A Visual History of Our National Emblem is a visual survey that explores the eagle in American life. A remarkable book that represents American culture, politics, and history, American Eagle will be the definitive source of this national icon for generations to come.

Book The United Symbolism of America

Download or read book The United Symbolism of America written by Robert Hieronimus and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historian author of Founding Fathers, Secret Societies offers a revealing analysis of America’s many symbols, icons, and monuments. America is young, but its symbols are old. Many of them—from the stars and stripes in the American flag to the strange images on our currency—have become so familiar that most of us don't give them a second thought. In United Symbolism of America, Robert R. Hieronimus will help you see the symbolic messages encoded for us by our Founding Fathers in the symbols they chose. Unlike other writers on this topic, Hieronimus discusses the historical background and artistic influences behind the design of our symbols and landmarks. United Symbolism of America includes revealing information about the symbolism embedded in The Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, and many of the monuments found in Washington, D.C. Putting to rest the erroneous notion that our country’s symbolism is rooted in Satanism, Hieronimus demonstrates that the symbols that have become our national icons represent hope, growth, and opportunity.

Book Emblems and the Natural World

Download or read book Emblems and the Natural World written by Paul J. Smith and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its invention by Andrea Alciato, the emblem is inextricably connected to the natural world. Alciato and his followers drew massively their inspiration from it. For their information about nature, the emblem authors were greatly indebted to ancient natural history, the medieval bestiaries, and the 15th- and 16th-century proto-emblematics, especially the imprese. The natural world became the main topic of, for instance, Camerarius’s botanical and zoological emblem books, and also of the ‘applied’ emblematics in drawings and decorative arts. Animal emblems are frequently quoted by naturalists (Gesner, Aldrovandi). This interdisciplinary volume aims to address these multiple connections between emblematics and Natural History in the broader perspective of their underlying ideologies – scientific, artistic, literary, political and/or religious. Contributors: Alison Saunders, Anne Rolet, Marisa Bass, Bernhard Schirg, Maren Biederbick, Sabine Kalff, Christian Peters, Frederik Knegtel, Agnes Kusler, Aline Smeesters, Astrid Zenker, Tobias Bulang, Sonja Schreiner, Paul Smith, and Karl Enenkel.
