Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Engravers Upon Copper and Steel General interest in the history, development, and study of American engraving seems to increase as we recede from the period when this art was practised, and approach the present age of reproduction by mechanical and photographic processes. Even the growing scarcity of the prints and their greatly increased cost do not seem to have deterred the collectors, but have rather added to their interest. In early American portraits, the hardness and crudity of our pioneer engravers are most apparent, and there is an absence of the grace and elegance about their work which characterized the Eighteenth Century engravers of Europe. To the collector, however, these possess a distinct historical value which is often lacking in the more finished and artistic productions, their very crudity of design and execution seeming to create a certain fascination which even their grotesqueness fails to dispel. Until the publication of the work on "American Engravers" by the late David McN. Stauffer, published by the Grolier Club of New York, in 1907, nothing in the nature of a comprehensive study of the work of American engravers, or a list of their prints, existed; the earlier book on the subject by William S. Baker, being only a collection of notes for future reference, and not a complete review of the subject. Mr. Stauffer's book was, therefore, virtually, a pioneer work in which he had endeavored to cover the field as completely as possible, and no praise is too great for the enthusiastic and painstaking manner in which he entered upon his task. Book American Engravers Upon Copper and Steel Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Engravers Upon Copper and Steel Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by David McNeely Stauffer and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Engravers Upon Copper and Steel, Vol. 2 The following lists of the work of the earlier American engravers upon copper and steel include only the plates of the men who were actually engraving in this country before 1825; though all of the work found of any man coming within this classification is covered in the lists. This date of 1825 was somewhat arbitrarily selected as about marking the beginning of what may be termed the commercial period of engraving in the United States; or, a time when engraving companies and the employers of engravers began to sign the plates issued, and the identity of the actual engraver was lost for all purposes of record. The output of some of these engraving companies became exceedingly varied in character and great in volume about the middle of the last century; and the simple labor involved in classifying and describing their plates, and the space occupied in printing these descriptions, would be out of proportion to the value of the record thus secured, and to the original purpose of the writer in making the compilation here presented. In this connection it is only necessary to say that in a comparatively few years a single New York engraving company produced over 25,000 separate plates. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Etching in America: With List of American Etchers and Notable Collections of Prints There are histories of American painting and engraving, but Etching in America is the first book devoted to this branch of. Our art. As a history, it records the subserviency of etching in the hands of our early engraver etchers, and the various influences leading to the late emancipation of etching as an art. There is included, my introduction to Recent American Etchings, published last year by the publishers of this volume. But, aside from mere historical narration, it has seemed essen tial that something should be said against a style of etching which, while retrogressive in methods and commercial in motive, yet meets with a certain degree of popular favor. On the other hand, I have tried to do full jus tice to our artist etchers, and by the citation of examples I have hoped to direct a larger share of public attention to the consideration. Book Artists and Engravers of British and American Book Plates

Download or read book Artists and Engravers of British and American Book Plates written by Henry Walter Fincham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Artists and Engravers of British and American Book Plates: A Book of Reference for Book Plate and Print Collectors T is not the intention of this work to go over the ground which has now been traversed so many times by a number of able writers, nor to say anything about the history, style, or collection of the book plate. This is simply a compilation which was begun and continued for my own use, and is now presented to my brother collectors at their request, many of them having found my manuscript useful for reference for some time past. It is hoped that in its present form it will also be of some use to the general print collector. About twelve years ago I commenced in an interleaved copy of the Hon. J. Leicester Warren's Guide to the Study of Book Plates to make additions to the list of engravers and their work contained therein. But it was soon apparent that interleaving alone would not contain a fraction of the additional names that were constantly turning up. In the year 1890 Sir Wollaston Franks, who had been keeping a similar list for some years, took the trouble to copy out for me a list of the artists. And engravers which he had accumulated; this was without any names of the plates which they had executed. A glance at the two lists was sufficient to compel me to remove the whole to a manuscript volume which has been in constant use ever since. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Works of Alexander Anderson, M.D: The First American Wood Engraver In preparing the present work, the author has carefully studied the existing material, and has made numerous extracts from the Diary of Dr. Anderson for the years 17 95 - 17 98. These extracts are particularly interesting as throwing a side light on the details of an uneventful but worthy and use ful career. The illustrations, nearly forty in number, have been selected as showing his progress in the art from his earliest wood-cuts for The Looking Glass for the Mind to his own portrait, engraved in his best style in his eighty-first year. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Early American Engraving Upon Copper, 1727-1850 In America as in Europe, engraving upon wood preceded work upon capper; and very crudely engraved seals and other simple wood cuts appear soon after the introduction of the printing-press into the American Colonies. The first woodcut portrait of which we have any record is that of the Rev. Richard Mather, credited to John Foster as the en graver and appearing in a life of Mather pub lished by Foster, in Cambridge, New England, in 1670. During the eighteenth century wood-engraving was practically only used in this country on the title-pages of almanacs and in the headings of and in advertising illustra tions in the newspapers of the day; and the few examples thus preserved are usually atrocious in execution. Certain lovers of prints have been asked to write on the engravers, etchers, or periods which chiefly interest them and upon which they are best qualified to speak; and, further more, to treat their special subjects in their own way. So far as subject matter is concerned, the essays are grouped approximately in chronological order, and the reader may range from Italian engravers before the time of Raphael and woodcuts by Albrecht Diirer to contemporary etchings by Zorn, Lepere, and Herman A. Webster. Throughout the essays one dominant note. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
