Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Ecclesiastical Review, 1890, Vol. 3 Among the Liturgies in use in the Eastern Church that of St. James the Less, Bishop of Jerusalem, is the most ancient. Most of the Fathers, ecclesiastical writers, and liturgists are of opinion, that the Apostles did not celebrate Mass be fore they had received the plenitude of divine grace on Pen tecost. St. Chrysostom seems to allude to this in one of his sermons on Pentecost, in which he says, that the Holy Spirit brought us the assurance of our reconciliation with God, after which feasts and gz' s are in order.1 The Ven. Bede speaks more clearly on this point, when, in one of his homilies on Pentecost, he assures us, that as soon as the Apostles re ceived the Divine Spirit, they offered the Holy Sacrifice. Moreover, St. Thomas, giving the reason why the Church selected the season immediately after Pentecost for the so lemnity of Corpus Christi, says it is because during that time the faithful began to frequent this sacrament. We may add also as a theological reason, that, as the Old Law was not abrogated before Pentecost, it is not likely that the sacrifice of the New Law was offered before that day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Ecclesiastical Review, Vol. 3: A Monthly Publication for the Clergy; November, 1890 When better times dawned upon the Church here, the difficulties surounding the priest were not entirely removed. The urgent demand for priests was, if anything, greater than before, owing to the ceaseless tide of immigration, largely Catholic; the professors in our seminaries were themselves for the most part missionaries, conversant with the difficul ties of the missionary field, and were not always so well up, it may be, with the strict requirements of the liturgy as could be desired; and the necessity they were under of crowding a long course into a brief space forced them to overlook certain points to which greater attention can be devoted at the present day. If it does not savor of temerity, it may still further be remarked that, when occasionally a missionary was raised to the episcopal dignity, the cruel lessons of circumstances, regretted by none more than by himself, may have followed him, and caused him, in the num ber and variety of his onerous duties, to tolerate certain de partures from the requirements of the liturgy the carrying out of which would have proven, under the circumstances, all but impossible. With these prefatory remarks I shall enter upon the subject indicated by the title of this article. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Ecclesiastical Review, 1890, Vol. 2 It was on this account, namely, that the Psalms are a form of divine teaching, containing precepts of right living as well as a pattern of prayer, that in the ancient Church clerics, without exception, were required to know by memory the entire Psalter, before they could be promoted to sacred orders. 3 And the Church fulfils the daily task of her triple mission when she enjoins upon her priests and religious the daily recitation of the Psalms. They express the progressive steps of the spiritual life in well-arranged order, marking, as ascetical writers mostly divide it, the purgative or penitent, the illuminative orjustified, the unitive or sanctified state of the soul. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Ecclesiastical Review, Vol. 28: A Monthly Publication for the Clergy It is very plain from this that every precaution was taken lest the Symbol should be committed to writing, or become public property. It was withheld even from catechumens of the first and second grade. St. Basil, a contemporary of St. Cyril, witnesses for the Church in Cappadocia. Of the dogmas and teachings preserved in the Church, he writes, we have some from the doctrine committed to writing, and some we have received, transmitted to us in a secret manner, from the tradition of the Apostles; both these have the same force in forming religion (i. E. Piety); and no one will gainsay either of these, no one, that is, who has the least experience of the ecclesiastical laws. 17 Again Dogma is one thing, and preaching another; for the former is guarded in silence, while preachings are openly proclaimed. '8 That he means by dogma especially the Symbol appears from the words he uses a little further on. The very confession of faith in Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, he asks, from what written records have we it? Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Ecclesiastical Review, 1895, Vol. 13: A Monthly Publication for the Clery And, as to the practical results, the President of Harvard has informed us, that no branch of instruction is taught now as it was thirty years ago. This is the prime feature, which strikes me at first sight, in the recent portion of the pedagogical department; the literature is so very new. Far from having any connection with the old, it starts into existence with such abruptness as if a first principle of its being were to have nothing what ever to do with anything that went before. It does not join on with the old set at all. Whence it comes, (whether from a chasm of disagreement prepense with everything Catholic and Protestant, such as governed the world before, or from a private chaos of its own - a kind of pedagogical bewilder ment, ) I do not pause at the present moment to discuss. I merely note the gap between the present and the past. Here is a book three hundred and two years old. It ex pounds pedagogy, the art and the science alike and it does so with what seems to my limited ken to be accuracy, ampli tude and an abounding wealth of erudition. It is calm and clear. I break through the spell of its wisdom and spirit myself away, across the unaccountable gap, to my acquaintance in this latter half of the nineteenth century. What do I find? My pedagogues are discussing the first elements of education they are dissecting mind, memory and that strange thing called a child. All the neighbors are rooting at the same elements, and seem to be quarrelling in a neighborly way. They are all proclaiming that they must stay where they are, till they get at the science of the thing and they are simply positive that, until they get at the science, they can never get at the art. Meanwhile, there is considerable hubbub about everything that comes up, principles, ways and means. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book American Ecclesiastical Review Vol 25 written by Catholic University of America and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Ecclesiastical Review, Vol. 25: A Monthly Publication for the Clergy The study of insurance has never been deemed an integral part of the theological curriculum. Yet it involves economic questions of material welfare in which both the interest and the duty of the clergy are concerned. While voluminous works treat of the logic of the insurance business, its various methods, and the budget of insurance laws, it must be owned that publications referring to ecclesiastical insurance are few and of meagre quality; accordingly, there is a general lack of accurate information regarding the conduct of the insurance business and its bookkeeping. The scope of this paper is to answer the question, Are we getting our due share from insurance companies? I do not propose to collate authorities on the constitutional and financial system of insurance, or to identify priests with any particular insurance company: my purpose is simply to characterize the work and the merits of a type of insurance confined to the clergy as a special class of policyholders and to the underwriting of church property. Hence I must not be understood as discriminating against sectional insurance policies. Thanks are due to several gentlemen high placed in the management of insurance for important assistance rendered in the preparation of portions of this article. Insurance is an important factor in the calculus of national economy. It is not an astrological fad or a confidence scheme. It is, in sooth, an exact science, founded, not on tuition, but on observation and statistics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
