Although they are all about Slavic linguistics, they cover a wide range of subjects and their theoretical implications are often not restricted to slavistics alone. Most contributions deal with Russian or Slavic in general, but South and West Slavic are also represented. The reader who knows the strong points for which Dutch slavistics is traditionally known and appreciated will not be disappointed: s/he will find papers on syntax and semantics (Fortuin, Van Helden, Honselaar, Keijsper, Tribušinina), aspectology (Barentsen, Genis), philology (Veder), historical Slavic phonology and morphology (Derksen, Kortlandt, Vermeer), dialectology (Houtzagers, Pronk), the study of sentence intonation (Odé) and papers representing crossroads between these disciplines: philology and historical linguistics (Hendriks, Schaeken), aspectology and philology (Kalsbeek). Apart from its quality in the linguistic fields enumerated here, Dutch Slavic linguistics is known for its empirical approach: the main goal is to find explanations for linguistic reality. Theory is relevant inasmuch as it helps us to find such explanations and not for its own sake. Though each and every paper in this volume exemplifies this empirical attitude, it might be especially illustrative to mention that almost all authors who studied the larger contemporary Slavic languages made extensive use of language corpus resources, part of which were collected at the University of Amsterdam.

The insight has gained ground that languages owe many of their characteristics to the languages they are in contact with over time. Yet the nature of these areal influences remains a matter of debate. Furthermore, areas are often hard to define. Hence the title: a shift from linguistic areas as concrete and circumscribed objects to a new way of doing linguistics: areally. New findings include the observation that there may be many more language areas than previously recognized. The book is primarily directed at linguists working in descriptive, comparative, historical and typological linguistics. Since it covers linguistic areas from four continents, it will have a wide appeal.

Book excerpt: The role deixis plays in structuring language and its relation to the context of utterance provides the focus for an examination of information packaging in Russian discourse. The analysis is based on a model which interprets discourse as constituted by four interrelated frameworks — the linguistic text, the text setting, the text content, and the participant framework. Deixis is divided into three primary dimensions of time, space, and person, which are metaphorically extended to secondary dimensions of information status (knowledge, focus, and theme). The linguistic devices which function in these dimensions encode information status by serving one or more communicative functions, including the presentative, directive, identifying, informing, acknowledging, and expressive functions. Discourse markers and deictics provide links between the content of the message, the linguistic text itself, and the context in which the message is produced. They introduce new participants, signal changes in thematic structure, bracket topical units, and mark the relative status of information. The book is written with both descriptive and theoretical goals. It aims to synthesize and revise current approaches to deixis and information packaging to account for the Russian data. The analysis extends beyond primary deixis to include knowledge structures and sources of knowledge, as well as the metalinguistic devices which signal changes in information flow, and grounding and saliency relations.

These concepts are related to each other in their functions and meanings and serve as organizing principles in a conceptual network of semantic neighbors, including "give, take, get, become, make," and verbs of position and motion. Renewal and replacement of "be" and "have" occur through processes of polysemization and suppletization involving lexical items in this network. Topics include polysemy, suppletion, tense/mood auxiliaries, modality, causatives, evidentiality, function words, contact phenomena, syntactic calques, and idiomatic constructions.
