Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Biography, Vol. 5 The vessel, winch brought over Archibald Stark and his party, arrived in Boston, about the time of the alarm of the prevalence of the small pox. The account we follow, places it in 1720, and states that the vessel, in consequence of hav ing the smallpox on board, was not allowed an entry in Boston. As 1721 was the year, when the smallpox committed the most formida ble ravages in Boston, having been brought in a vessel from the West Indies, it is not unlikely, that the party of Stark arrived in Boston Bay, while the panic produced by the ravages of the disease was at its height. At all events, they were refused permission to land in Boston; and they passed the winter on the banks of the Ken nebec in Maine, and near the spot where vviscas set was afterwards settled. The following year they removed to Nutfield, where thev had been preceded by the first emigrating company of their countrymen. Here a permanent and flourishing settlement was founded, which took the name of Londonderry in 1722, in memory of the place 01 their abode in Ireland. History which should never be bent, twisted, censored, or banned to fit any ideological narrative. If it is good, let us praise it. If it is bad, let us condemn it and learn from it. But let us never twist, censor, or cancel it. And yet, more and more followers of the Left want to do just that. As early as the days of Moses, they had extended their navigation beyond the pillars of Hercules, on the western coast of Africa, toward the south; and as far northward as the island of Britain, whence they imported tin and lead, which according to the universal testimony of the ancients, were not then found in any other country. From the accounts given in ancient history of the expeditions of Sesostris, King of Egypt, some have been led to conclude, that he made a discoverer of all the coasts of Africa. However this might be, there is no doubt that he opened, or revived a commercial intercourse with India and Ethiopia, by way of the Red Sea, It hath also been thought, that the voyages of the Phenicians and Hebrews to Ophir, in the time of Solomon, were nothing more nor less than circumnavigations of Africa.
