Download or read book Heroes of Discovery in America Classic Reprint written by Charles Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of Discovery in America The explorers of this continent were great men in their day, and they have made a great mark on the his tory of the land they made known. For more than four centuries their work has been kept up and it is not yet complete, for there are areas still in America on which the foot of the white man has not been set. From Columbus, who daringly crossed an unknown ocean to discover an unknown continent, to Peary, who in our own day has time and again plunged into the seas of ice in restless quest of the mysterious pole, the list is a long one and is filled with names of valiant and unconquerable men. Heroes of discovery are these in the highest sense, and it is fitting that the story of their deeds should be put upon record. This we have sought to do, in as full a sense as the space at our command permits, endeavoring to omit none of the great discoverers, none of the leaders in this great drama of the opening of a new world. It is hoped that readers will find these tales full of interest and inspira tion and gain from them an adequate sense of what was accomplished in the great work of exploring a continent. Book Northland A 4 000 Mile Journey Along America s Forgotten Border

Download or read book Northland A 4 000 Mile Journey Along America s Forgotten Border written by Porter Fox and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Romantic, urgent, valuable and appealing as hell.” —Andrew McCarthy, New York Times Book Review Writer Porter Fox spent three years exploring 4,000 miles of the border between Maine and Washington, traveling by canoe, freighter, car, and foot. In Northland, he blends a deeply reported and beautifully written story of the region’s history with a riveting account of his travels. Setting out from the easternmost point in the mainland United States, Fox follows explorer Samuel de Champlain’s adventures across the Northeast; recounts the rise and fall of the timber, iron, and rail industries; crosses the Great Lakes on a freighter; and traces the forty-ninth parallel from Minnesota to the Pacific Ocean. He weaves in his encounters with residents, border guards, Indian activists, and militia leaders to give a dynamic portrait of the northland today, wracked by climate change, water wars, oil booms, and border security.

Download or read book Young Folks Book of American Explorers Classic Reprint written by Thomas Wentworth Higginson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young Folks' Book of American Explorers It has always seemed to me that the narratives of the early discoverers and explorers of the American coast were as interesting as "Robinson Crusoe," and were, indeed, very much like it. This has led me to make a series of extracts from these narratives, selecting what appeared to me the most interesting parts, and altering only the spelling. The grammar is not always correct; but it would be impossible to alter that without changing the style of writing too much: so it has not been changed at all. Wherever it has seemed necessary, I have put a word of my own in brackets [thus]; but all else is the very language of the old writers, or their translators. Whenever any thing has been omitted, great or small, the place is marked by dots... Some of the hardest words have been explained by footnotes. One great thing which I have wished my readers to learn is the charm of an original narrative. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Who in the World Was The Forgotten Explorer The Story of Amerigo Vespucci Who in the World

Download or read book Who in the World Was The Forgotten Explorer The Story of Amerigo Vespucci Who in the World written by Lorene Lambert and published by Peace Hill Press. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the intriguing story of Amerigo Vespucci in this junior-level biography from Peace Hill Press. When Columbus landed on the islands in the Caribbean Sea, he thought he was off the coast of China. A few years later, Amerigo Vespucci sailed west, hoping to find a new route to the East. Instead, he discovered new lands that nobody at home knew about. What did he see? Who did he tell? And why is America named after him? Outstanding illustrations from Jed Mickle complement the fabulous story, giving second-grade readers insight into the life of this discoverer. About the series: The classical curriculum introduces even the youngest student to the pleasures of true learning. Elementary students learn history not through predigested textbooks with multiple-choice answers, but through reading the stories of history. Unfortunately, biographies of great men and women of the past are almost all written for older students, limiting the ability of young students to explore history through reading. Libraries are crammed with biographies written for high school students and adults—while beginning readers are provided with a shelf full of junior-level books about football players, NASCAR drivers, and movie stars. Now, Peace Hill Press puts real history back into the grasp of the youngest historians with the Who in the World Biography Series. The first entries in the series provide young readers and their parents and teachers with biographies of great men and women of the Middle Ages. Designed to be used as part of The Story of the World curriculum, these biographies give beginning historians in grades 2–4 a chance to explore beyond the textbook. An audio version is also available separately.

Book Secrets of Ancient America

Download or read book Secrets of Ancient America written by Carl Lehrburger and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-01-02 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real history of the New World and the visitors, from both East and West, who traveled to the Americas long before 1492 • Provides more than 300 photographs and drawings, including Celtic runes in New England, Gaelic inscriptions in Colorado, and Asian symbols in the West • Reinterprets many archaeological finds, such as the Ohio Serpent Mound • Reveals Celtic, Hebrew, Roman, early Christian, Templar, Egyptian, Chinese, and Japanese influences in North American artifacts and ruins As the myth of Columbus “discovering” America falls from the pedestal of established history, we are given the opportunity to discover the real story of the New World and the visitors, from both East and West, who traveled there long before 1492. Sharing his more than 25 years of research and travel to sites throughout North America, Carl Lehrburger employs epigraphy, archaeology, and archaeoastronomy to reveal extensive evidence for pre-Columbian explorers in ancient America. He provides more than 300 photographs and drawings of sites, relics, and rock art, including Celtic and Norse runes in New England, Phoenician and Hebrew inscriptions in the Midwest, and ancient Shiva linga and Egyptian hieroglyphs in the West. He uncovers the real story of Columbus and his motives for coming to the Americas. He reinterprets many well-known archaeological and astronomical finds, such as the Ohio Serpent Mound, America’s Stonehenge in New Hampshire, and the Crespi Collection in Ecuador. He reveals Celtic, Hebrew, Roman, early Christian, Templar, Egyptian, Chinese, and Japanese influences in famous stones and ruins, reconstructing the record of what really happened on the American continents prior to Columbus. He also looks at Hindu influences in Mesoamerica and sacred sexuality encoded in archaeological sites. Expanding upon the work of well-known diffusionists such as Barry Fell and Gunnar Thompson, the author documents the travels and settlements of trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific explorers, miners, and settlers who made it to the Americas and left their marks for us to discover. Interpreting their sacred symbols, he shows how their teachings, prayers, and cosmologies reveal the cosmic order and sacred landscape of the Americas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of American Explorers: A Historical Reader It need hardly be suggested that in using a book like this the problem is to help the pupil to get at the soul of history, or, to put it in another way, to enable him to understand how the man whose life-story is under consideration thought and felt when he was performing the deeds told of him in the text. And in thus helping the pupil we are furnishing him what he desires. For it is more life that he craves, and the teacher is to him an inter preter of that larger life which is to become a part of his own. Download or read book The Men Who United the States written by Simon Winchester and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Simon Winchester never disappoints, and The Men Who United the States is a lively and surprising account of how this sprawling piece of geography became a nation. This is America from the ground up. Inspiring and engaging.” —Tom Brokaw Simon Winchester, acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of Atlantic and The Professor and the Madman, delivers his first book about America: a fascinating popular history that illuminates the men who toiled fearlessly to discover, connect, and bond the citizenry and geography of the U.S.A. from its beginnings. How did America become “one nation, indivisible”? What unified a growing number of disparate states into the modern country we recognize today? To answer these questions, Winchester follows in the footsteps of America’s most essential explorers, thinkers, and innovators, such as Lewis and Clark and the leaders of the Great Surveys; the builders of the first transcontinental telegraph and the powerful civil engineer behind the Interstate Highway System. He treks vast swaths of territory, from Pittsburgh to Portland, Rochester to San Francisco, Seattle to Anchorage, introducing the fascinating people who played a pivotal role in creating today’s United States. Throughout, he ponders whether the historic work of uniting the States has succeeded, and to what degree. Featuring 32 illustrations throughout the text, The Men Who United the States is a fresh look at the way in which the most powerful nation on earth came together.
