The second consideration was, that many of the prin eipel nations of Europe are labouring in the great cause of democracy with the might of giants, but without the specific information which can satisfactorily direct their efforts. New-born into the world of liberty, the almost emancipated nations of Europe have much to learn from the wisdom and experience of the well-established democracies of America. It was the desire to contribute something to facilitate the choice of political institutions in Europe, by presenting the experience of two great and dissimilar systems, that has stimulated the author, in addition to his anxiety for his own country.
