Book The Night the Music Died

Download or read book The Night the Music Died written by Ian Heads and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2014 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty years ago, a flashy new rugby league competition, the 'Amco Cup', was launched. Played under lights, televised live on Wednesday nights with commentary by a young Ray Warren, it was supposed to be won by one of the rich Sydney clubs. Instead, the trophy went to Western Division, a team from western NSW that included a timber cutter, a slaughterman, a greyhound trainer, a policeman, a brickie, miners and farmers. One player, a balding back-rower nicknamed 'TV Ted' Ellery, became an instant celebrity. Along the way, TV Ted and his mates fought a match against Great Britain that might have been the most violent football game ever played. Three players were sent off and the referee needed a police escort to get not just out of the ground but out of town. Ian Heads has in effect written two books in one: describing in vivid detail a memorable season highlighted by an implausible triumph... and revisiting the players to discover what has become of them. The tale told by the referee of the Great Britain encounter, a family secret until Heads came upon it in the course of his research, is one of the most revealing and controversial ever published. The Night the Music Died is the classic story of the underdog winning against all odds. It could be the sporting book of the year.

Book Uncertain Corridors

Download or read book Uncertain Corridors written by Gideon Haigh and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For all the glamour and new-found wealth that has come to cricket thanks to the IPL, the sport has rarely faced such an uncertain future. The gold standard of cricket - Test matches - is being sidelined in some countries by the shorter forms of the game. While the sport is being transformed, administrators are struggling to keep pace with it all. Yet, despite all of this, the sport's essential elements remain in place: great games are played, new stars rise up and old stars step back and retire. In this new collection of writing, Gideon Haigh takes the pulse of the game today, and in particular looks at the decline of the sport in Australia, where the once all-conquering men in the 'baggy green' suddenly found themselves struggling to impose themselves on their opponents.

Book A Statistical History of Rugby League

Download or read book A Statistical History of Rugby League written by Stephen Kane and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-06-08 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Statistical History of Rugby League I always wanted to produce these stats as just a way to take my mind off my back injury and help fi ll in my days but I also wanted them to be as accurate as I could make them, so as I found stats I had to cross check them with other books and websites and to try to be as acurate as possible and with various sites and books and micrfi sch fi lms I actually went through every game ever played. there are the players stats in alphabetical order then there is the order of Darren Lockyer on 355 games down to every player that just played 1 game, (1 game is still more than most players ever got a chance to play), then there is the list of games played at 1 club and then the lists of pointscorers from Hazam El Masri all the way down to the guys that kicked 1 fi eld goal for a solitary point, as well as the pointscorers at 1 club, also the tryscorers lists from The Great Ken Irvine on 212 all the way to 1 and at 1 club Ken Irvine on 171 to 1 again, then goalkickers and fi eld goal kickers. then with the club stats I have added in the records for more than 1 try in a game and all the Hat tricks 4’s, 5’s, 6’s 7’s and eight in a game also the most points, tries, goals f/goals in a game season and career at every club including the clubs that are no longer around, like Cumberland who where only in for 1 season. now with these statistics there may be people out there that are either the players or family of the players that the stats are about and corrections may be needed and I am happy for any feedback, but please remember this is as accurate as I could fi nd with the resources I had available, and there is no opinion involved just cold hard stats, some of the sin binned players I had to go back through some 1000 hours of DVD’s and video tapes to find which particular brawl or punch having said that there is 2 of these stats where I have included my opinion the fi rst is for the Golden Boot Award, there was a period between 1991-1998 where the award wasnt given, so I have listed the players that I believe should have won the award, butI took into consideration the RLW player of the Year the Dally M award, the English Player of the Year and various other Awards that were on off er in those years, the other one and I hope this causes much discussion is in the State of Origin Records, in particular the 1987 Series, if you ask a Queenslander the Game in Los Angeles was an Exhibition Match, but the way I see it if it was a joke match why did they send a full strength Team, so with New South Wales winning Games 1 and 4 and Queensland winning Games 2 and 3 the series was Drawn 2 all, I know that with Queensland winning the Last 7 Series it Doesn’t mean much as they have the Series Overall lead Anyway, but as a Passionate Blues Supporter this is a Wrong that Historically should be Righted. Anyway that all being said I hope you enjoy the read and maybe even end some arguments with these stats as much as I have enjoyed bringing them to you and I will continue to do so in the future.

Book The Hole Truth

  • Author : Bill Felber
  • Publisher : University of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2019-01-01
  • ISBN : 1496206541
  • Pages : 327 pages

Download or read book The Hole Truth written by Bill Felber and published by University of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever wonder whether Tiger Woods in his prime would have beaten Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, or Jack Nicklaus in their primes? And could any of them have beaten Babe Zaharias? Obviously, if Bobby Jones were returned to life and health and then given his old hickory-shafted mashie, persimmon-headed driver, and rubber-core ball in a match against Jordan Spieth, the outcome would be foreordained. But what if the impact of the training, equipment, courses, and traveling conditions could be neutralized in order to create a measurement? Now for the first time, questions are answered about the relative abilities of the greatest players in the history of professional golf. In The Hole Truth Bill Felber provides a relativistic approach for evaluating and comparing the performance of golfers while acknowledging the game’s changing nature. The Hole Truth analyzes the performances of players relative to their peers, creating an index of exceptionality that automatically factors the changing nature of the game through time. That index is based on the standard deviation of the performances of players in golf’s recognized major championships dating back to 1860. More than two hundred players are rated in comparison with one another, more than sixty of them in detail with profiles providing context on their ranking. For the dedicated golf fan, The Hole Truth is an engaging way to see in the numbers where their favorite golfers rank across eras and where current players like Rory McIlroy and Inbee Park compare to the game’s greats.

Book Thirty Years in the South Seas

Download or read book Thirty Years in the South Seas written by Richard Parkinson and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Richard Parkinson's Dreissig Jahre in der Sudsee was first published in 1907. In this 900-page work, Parkinson drew together and expanded on the scientific and popular papers he had been publishing since 1887, creating in the process a landmark ethnography of the Bismarck Archipelago." "His travels covered the islands now known as New Britain, New Ireland, New Hanover, Manus, and Buka and Bougainville, but he also collected information about the mainland of New Guinea (Kaiser Wilhelmsland). His observations covered a wide range, from religious life and ceremonies to artefacts and language. It is clear he talked extensively with people - though mostly with a translator - and compared accounts. He also took many photographs, some 200 of which were included in the volume. Given the period, all his human subjects had to be posed, but the range of associated detail, probably unconsciously included, is very wide."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book 281 and Beyond

  • Author : V. V. S. Laxman

Download or read book 281 and Beyond written by V. V. S. Laxman and published by Westland Publication Limited. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stylish batsman who could score against any kind of bowling, VVS Laxman played over a hundred Tests to aggregate more than 8,000 runs. Cricket fans still remember with awe his game-changing knock of 281 against Australia in 2001 at Eden Gardens. But playing for India was never easy. He was dropped as often as he was picked, and despite his vast experience and unimpeachable skill, he never made it to a World Cup team. All through his playing years, Laxman was known to be a soft-spoken man who kept his distance from controversy. Which is what makes this autobiography truly special. It's candid and reflective, happy and sad by turns, and deeply insightful. He writes of dressing-room meltdowns and champagne evenings, the exhilaration of playing with and against the best in the world, the nuances of batting in different formats and on various pitches, the learnings with John Wright and the rocky times under Greg Chappell. In 281 and Beyond, Laxman lays bare the ecstasy and the trauma of being one of the chosen XI in a country that is devoted to cricket.
