Book The Amazing Foot Race of 1921

Download or read book The Amazing Foot Race of 1921 written by Shirley Jean Roll Tucker and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2011 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: READ ALL ABOUT IT: Hikers to Walk From East Coast to Vancouver This adventure tale celebrates five Canadians who hiked from Halifax to Vancouver in 1921. For a nation struggling with post-war inflation, labour unrest and unemployment, the 3,645-mile hike was a welcome distraction. Daily reports from the competitors, who followed the CPR tracks, ran in the Halifax Herald and in other newspapers, and it wasn`t long before the entire nation had was caught up in the daily drama of the five hikers. They drew big crowds wherever they settled for the night or shared a meal with locals. Bands played. Crowds cheered. People placed their bets. By the time they were done, all five competitors had turned Canada "walking crazy." Shirley Jean Roll Tucker's lively account of this largely forgotten Canadian sporting event uses the vernacular of the day, with newspaper accounts and the hikers' own words.

Book Ten Years of Wall Street

Download or read book Ten Years of Wall Street written by Barnie F. Winkelman and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stock market crash of 1929 and the subsequent Great Depression did not occur in a vacuum: their roots lie in economic events that occurred over the previous ten years. This book performs a financial autopsy on the "speculative decade" from 1919 to 1929, exploring the ruinous aftermath of World War I-in which war debts were contested and battles over reparations set the stage for a difficult international monetary situation-as well as the natural waxing and waning of economic cycles and the processes and procedures of stock exchanges that contributed to disaster. Written by a lawyer and emphasizing a legal perspective on the workings of a complex economy, this classic work of high finance offers a unique panorama on an important era of American history that is often overlooked. BARNIE F. WINKELMAN (b. 1894) also wrote Modern Chess (1931) and John D Rockefeller (1937), among other books.

Book Great Soul

Download or read book Great Soul written by Joseph Lelyveld and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-04-03 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly original, stirring book on Mahatma Gandhi that deepens our sense of his achievements and disappointments—his success in seizing India’s imagination and shaping its independence struggle as a mass movement, his recognition late in life that few of his followers paid more than lip service to his ambitious goals of social justice for the country’s minorities, outcasts, and rural poor. “A revelation. . . . Lelyveld has restored human depth to the Mahatma.”—Hari Kunzru, The New York Times Pulitzer Prize–winner Joseph Lelyveld shows in vivid, unmatched detail how Gandhi’s sense of mission, social values, and philosophy of nonviolent resistance were shaped on another subcontinent—during two decades in South Africa—and then tested by an India that quickly learned to revere him as a Mahatma, or “Great Soul,” while following him only a small part of the way to the social transformation he envisioned. The man himself emerges as one of history’s most remarkable self-creations, a prosperous lawyer who became an ascetic in a loincloth wholly dedicated to political and social action. Lelyveld leads us step-by-step through the heroic—and tragic—last months of this selfless leader’s long campaign when his nonviolent efforts culminated in the partition of India, the creation of Pakistan, and a bloodbath of ethnic cleansing that ended only with his own assassination. India and its politicians were ready to place Gandhi on a pedestal as “Father of the Nation” but were less inclined to embrace his teachings. Muslim support, crucial in his rise to leadership, soon waned, and the oppressed untouchables—for whom Gandhi spoke to Hindus as a whole—produced their own leaders. Here is a vital, brilliant reconsideration of Gandhi’s extraordinary struggles on two continents, of his fierce but, finally, unfulfilled hopes, and of his ever-evolving legacy, which more than six decades after his death still ensures his place as India’s social conscience—and not just India’s.

Book Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson

Download or read book Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson written by Keith Jeffery and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2006-03-09 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson, an Irishman who in June 1922 was assassinated on his doorstep in London by Irish republicans, was one of the most controversial British soldiers of the modern age. Before 1914 he did much to secure the Anglo-French alliance and was responsible for the planning which saw the British Expeditionary Force successfully despatched to France after the outbreak of war with Germany. A passionate Irish unionist, he gained a reputation as an intensely'political' soldier, especially during the 'Curragh crisis' of 1914 when some officers resigned their commisssions rather than coerce Ulster unionists into a Home Rule Ireland. During the war he played a major role in Anglo-French liaison, and ended up as Chief of the Imperial General Staff, professionalhead of the army, a post he held until February 1922.After Wilson retired from the army, he became an MP and was chief security adviser to the new Northern Ireland government. As such, he became a target for nationalist Irish militants, being identified with the security policies of the Belfast regime, though wrongly with Protestant sectarian attacks on Catholics. He is remembered today in unionist Northern Ireland as a kind of founding martyr for the state.Wilson's reputation was ruined in 1927 with the publication of an official biography, which quoted extensively and injudiciously from his entertaining, indiscreet, and wildly opinionated diaries, giving the impression that he was some sort of Machiavellian monster. In this first modern biography, using a wide variety of official and private sources for the first time, Keith Jeffery reassesses Wilson's life and career and places him clearly in his social, national, and political context.

Book The Dead of the Irish Revolution

Download or read book The Dead of the Irish Revolution written by Eunan O'Halpin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive account to record and analyze all deaths arising from the Irish revolution between 1916 and 1921 "A monumental new book [and] an incredible piece of research. . . . Formidable, authoritative and handsomely produced, The Dead of the Irish Revolution is a fitting memorial."--Andrew Lynch, Irish Independent "Will surely serve as the indispensable reference work on this topic for the foreseeable future. . . . A truly remarkable feat of close scholarship and calm exposition."--Gearoid O Tuathaigh, Irish Times Weekend This account covers the turbulent period from the 1916 Rising to the Anglo-Irish Treaty of December 1921--a period which saw the achievement of independence for most of nationalist Ireland and the establishment of Northern Ireland as a self-governing province of the United Kingdom. Separatists fought for independence against government forces and, in North East Ulster, armed loyalists. Civilians suffered violence from all combatants, sometimes as collateral damage, often as targets. Eunan O'Halpin and Daithí Ó Corráin catalogue and analyze the deaths of all men, women, and children who died during the revolutionary years--505 in 1916; 2,344 between 1917 and 1921. This study provides a unique and comprehensive picture of everyone who died: in what manner, by whose hands, and why. Through their stories we obtain original insight into the Irish revolution itself.
