Download or read book The Role of Nutrition in Maintaining Health in the Nation s Elderly written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-06-09 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malnutrition and obesity are both common among Americans over age 65. There are also a host of other medical conditions from which older people and other Medicare beneficiaries suffer that could be improved with appropriate nutritional intervention. Despite that, access to a nutrition professional is very limited. Do nutrition services benefit older people in terms of morbidity, mortality, or quality of life? Which health professionals are best qualified to provide such services? What would be the cost to Medicare of such services? Would the cost be offset by reduced illness in this population? This book addresses these questions, provides recommendations for nutrition services for the elderly, and considers how the coverage policy should be approached and practiced. The book discusses the role of nutrition therapy in the management of a number of diseases. It also examines what the elderly receive in the way of nutrition services along the continuum of care settings and addresses the areas of expertise needed by health professionals to provide appropriate nutrition services and therapy.

Download or read book Zen from China to Cyberspace written by Frank Ra and published by Authentic happiness formula. This book was released on 2011-04-25 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay discuss how Chan flourished out of the Dhyana tradition. How it came from China, moved to Korea, Japan, spread to the West, including USA, Europe and Australia. And then on new media like Internet. The author believes that the straightforward and non-hierarchic approach of Zen made it an appropriate answer to the needs of millions of people along the centuries, and this is especially true here and now. After seeing how Seon spread so far, we then discuss practical ways of making it even more accessible in the cyberspace, with potential and limits of new media. Chan, Seon and Zen stand for similar Dharma schools, respectively in China, Korea and Japan. Zen became a house-hold name, because Japanese Zen masters played an important role in spreading awareness about it, that is why Zen has been used as title for this booklet. The author, Frank Ra, is Italian, has spent most of his adult life in North America, England and Estonia, and travelling around the World. He settled in beautiful British Columbia, Canada. He is a Dharma instructor, currently furthering his knowledge by attending Amida Trust's training about Buddhist psychology and its therapeutic applications; has been coaching and working in eCommunication since late 1995; he also studied business and graduated in International Relations and Diplomacy. Download or read book Military Strategies for Sustainment of Nutrition and Immune Function in the Field written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-05-13 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every aspect of immune function and host defense is dependent upon a proper supply and balance of nutrients. Severe malnutrition can cause significant alteration in immune response, but even subclinical deficits may be associated with an impaired immune response, and an increased risk of infection. Infectious diseases have accounted for more off-duty days during major wars than combat wounds or nonbattle injuries. Combined stressors may reduce the normal ability of soldiers to resist pathogens, increase their susceptibility to biological warfare agents, and reduce the effectiveness of vaccines intended to protect them. There is also a concern with the inappropriate use of dietary supplements. This book, one of a series, examines the impact of various types of stressors and the role of specific dietary nutrients in maintaining immune function of military personnel in the field. It reviews the impact of compromised nutrition status on immune function; the interaction of health, exercise, and stress (both physical and psychological) in immune function; and the role of nutritional supplements and newer biotechnology methods reported to enhance immune function. The first part of the book contains the committee's workshop summary and evaluation of ongoing research by Army scientists on immune status in special forces troops, responses to the Army's questions, conclusions, and recommendations. The rest of the book contains papers contributed by workshop speakers, grouped under such broad topics as an introduction to what is known about immune function, the assessment of immune function, the effect of nutrition, and the relation between the many and varied stresses encountered by military personnel and their effect on health.

Download or read book Antibiotic Resistance written by Derek J. Chadwick and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antibiotic Resistance: Origins, Evolution, Selection and Spread Chairman: Stuart B. Levy, 1997 Over the last 50 years, the rapid increase in the use of antibiotics, not only in people, but also in animal husbandry and agriculture, has delivered a selection unprecedented in the history of evolution. Consequently, society is facing one of its gravest public health problems-the emergence of infectious bacteria with resistance to many, and in some cases all, available antibiotics. This book brings together a multidisciplinary group of experts to discuss this problem. It begins by examining the origins of resistance and goes on to look at how the use of antibiotics in human medicine and farming/agriculture has selected for resistant bacteria. Separate chapters describe the evolution of resistance determinants and how these are spread both within and between bacterial species. Finally, the book contains discussions on strategies for countering the threat of antibiotic resistance. A major re-thinking of our approach to the treatment of infectious diseases is proposed-that antibiotic resistance should be seen as a problem created by the disruption of normal microbial ecology. To restore efficacy to earlier antibiotics, and to maintain the success of new antibiotics that are introduced, we need to use these drugs in a way that ensures an ecological balance that favours the predominance of susceptible bacteria.
