Download or read book Relations Between the European Union and Latin America written by Wolf Grabendorff and published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft. This book was released on 2005 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume describes, analyses, and evaluates EU-Latin American relation in general with special reference to MERCOSUR and the Carribean. It combines empirical analyses of the development of this relation with a systematic discussion of regionalisation and biregionalism and includes discussions about future developments. In addition, it relates this "biregional" relation into the general framework of global change, U.S.-EU-Latin American relations, and Latin American regionalisation processes. The project summarizes results from a research project, in which leading Latin American and European scholars jointly explored possibilities and limits of EU-Latin American cooperation in the past, present, and future.
Download or read book European Foreign Policy written by Dieter Mahncke and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is agreement in political and academic circles that the European Union needs a common foreign and security policy (CFSP). The question is how to move from recognised necessity to practical implementation: from rhetoric to reality. Many efforts have been made, and indeed the creation of a European foreign policy is 'work in progress'. Bringing together a multinational team of both young researchers and established academics, this volume offers a comprehensive analysis of this process, uniquely combining the examination of the foundations, institutions, procedures and obstacles of EU-level foreign policy with an extensive range of case studies exploring European policy 'on the ground' in key areas such as the Balkans, Africa or the Middle East. Of use and interest to students of European politics and the general reader alike, it breaks through the Euro-jargon to provide a clear, accessible and up-to-date account of this unprecedented system of international relations, with a particular focus placed on the questions of why EU member states participate in the CFSP and what impact it enables them to have in geopolitics.

Download or read book International Asymmetries and the Design of the International Financial System written by José Antonio Ocampo and published by Santiago, Chile : Naciones Unidas. This book was released on 2001 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper argues that the design of the international financial system should take into consideration three problems: financial market instability; basic macroeconomic and financial asymmetries which characterise the international economy; and the additional problems generated by the current globalization process. A distinction is drawn between systemic issues, and centre-periphery issues. Based on this distinction, the paper proposed a broad agenda which relates both to the organisational structure of international financial institutions, and the services provided by them.

Download or read book Do Private Sector Deficits Matter written by Manuel Marfán and published by CEPAL/ECLAC. This book was released on 2000 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to emphasis the links between external vulnerability and excess domestic expenditure explained by private sector behaviour. At the time of their last crises, Mexico and most of the Southeast Asian economies showed significant current account deficits while their fiscal accounts were under control. This was also the case in Chile 1996-97, prior to its recession. The mix of large current account deficits and fiscal balance or fiscal surplus, implies that the origin of excess domestic expenditure, and of vulnerability, was non-fiscal. Using a formal analytical model, this paper looks at the macroeconomic consequences of non-fiscal expenditure and the consequences of inconsistent policy targets. Policy options are also analysed. Key conclusions are: fiscal policy is the key decision variable for attaining a consistent current account; private expenditure crowds out fiscal policy.
