Book The Art of Being Unreasonable

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unorthodox success principles from a billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist Eli Broad's embrace of "unreasonable thinking" has helped him build two Fortune 500 companies, amass personal billions, and use his wealth to create a new approach to philanthropy. He has helped to fund scientific research institutes, K-12 education reform, and some of the world's greatest contemporary art museums. By contrast, "reasonable" people come up with all the reasons something new and different can't be done, because, after all, no one else has done it that way. This book shares the "unreasonable" principles—from negotiating to risk-taking, from investing to hiring—that have made Eli Broad such a success. Broad helped to create the Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Broad Contemporary Art Museum at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and The Broad, a new museum being built in downtown Los Angeles His investing approach to philanthropy has led to the creation of scientific and medical research centers in the fields of genomic medicine and stem cell research At his alma mater, Michigan State University, he endowed a full-time M.B.A. program, and he and his wife have funded a new contemporary art museum on campus to serve the broader region Eli Broad is the founder of two Fortune 500 companies: KB Home and SunAmerica If you're stuck doing what reasonable people do—and not getting anywhere—let Eli Broad show you how to be unreasonable, and see how far your next endeavor can go.

Download or read book Crime Detector written by Robert F. Lovelace and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It appears to me that crime, like time, is continual. The reason I say this is that God has made my brain is such a way that when a crime is committed within the grasp of myself I suffer an enormous head pain until it is completed or stopped. I seemed to have pain so much here lately is why I feel that crime is on the upturn. This has been going all my life with my brain acting like this. There has been times when I suffered pain and it turned out to be crimes where people were killed but there was not enough evidence available in my vision to identify the perpetrators. This information came from the sheriff later and I presumed it was true. DNA and other methods he said were used to come up with the one who committed the crime. Many have not been apprehended so I had it in my mind that I would try to use that mystic part of my brain to capture them or at least locate them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use this spiritual guide to equip yourself with the tools needed to tear down anxiety and build inner peace. Spiritual people often find that their own expectations of living a life dedicated to a higher power makes them more susceptible to high-functioning anxiety. Sometimes, traditional relaxation techniques either do not work, don’t last, or, in some cases, actually increase their anxiety. Psychotherapist, yoga teacher, and interfaith minister Rev. Connie L. Habash has helped hundreds of spiritual people overcome fear and anxiety, regain happiness, and feel calmer. In over twenty-five years as a counselor helping spiritual people overcome anxiety, Rev. Connie has taught that it takes more than chanting mantras, stretching, or relaxation techniques to calm anxiety. It requires a transformation in perception, moment-to-moment body awareness, and a conscious response to thoughts and emotions. Awakening from Anxiety provides valuable psycho-spiritual tools to deepen spiritual awakening and calm fears:Learn what anxiety is and when it becomes a problemUnderstand the six mistakes spiritual people make that increase anxietyDiscover the seven keys to a more calm, confident, courageous lifeKnow how to break through the old patterns of stress, worry, and fear into a new perception of your true selfExplore spiritual principles and yoga philosophy to cultivate inner peace If you enjoyed Stop Anxiety from Stopping You and First, We Make the Beast Beautiful, Awakening from Anxiety will take your healing and renewal from anxiety to the next level. “A book I will recommend to many for both practical advice and spiritual insights for handling stress, worry, and anxiety.”?Becca Anderson, author of Prayers for Calm

Download or read book Assurance written by Krista Lawlor and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claiming to know is more than making a report about one's epistemic position: one also offers one's assurance to others. What is an assurance? In this book, Krista Lawlor unites J. L. Austin's insights about the pragmatics of assurance-giving and the semantics of knowledge claims into a systematic whole. The central theme in the Austinian view is that of reasonableness: appeal to a 'reasonable person' standard makes the practice of assurance-giving possible, and lets our knowledge claims be true despite differences in practical interests and disagreement among speakers and hearers. Lawlor provides an original account of how the Austinian view addresses a number of difficulties for contextualist semantic theories, resolves closure-based skeptical paradoxes, and helps us to tread the line between acknowledging our fallibility and skepticism.

Book Taking Charge of Your Emotions

Download or read book Taking Charge of Your Emotions written by Louis H. Primavera and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From time to time, all of us face circumstances that can be psychologically demoralizing. We might have difficulties with certain types of people, have marital problems, or be overwhelmed by day-to-day burdens. When conditions are especially troublesome, we might experience destructive emotions such as anger, fear of abandonment, or anxiety that get the better of us. We may also experience a sense of helplessness, a feeling that events and people control us, and that can detract from our overall outlook and well-being. Nevertheless, despite how bleaks things can appear, it is possible to gain more control over our lives and learn to cope better with things that are beyond our control. By understanding how and why we react the way we do to various situations and events, we can learn to manage and change our own thoughts and emotions. In that way, we can maximize the positive and minimize the negative outcomes in our day to day living, and in so doing give ourselves an opportunity to enhance our overall well-being. Using a Rational Emotive Behavior approach, the authors show readers how to identify irrational beliefs replace them with rational ones, and lead a more fulfilling and balanced life. Anyone struggling with emotions or moods that often feel out of control or self-defeating will find comfort and guidance in these pages.

Book excerpt: I loved Phony! How I Faked My Way Through Life...because it is her true story of telling a lie in 1998 that got her hired by a Florida engineering firm's accounting department. She claimed to have a bachelors degree when, in truth, she only had a high school diploma. What followed was a very successful professional life because, despite her lack of college, she had smarts, native intelligence. As she made her way to another firm and up the corporate ladder, she eventually became the manager of the two largest financial districts in a firm. Still in her thirties, she oversaw twenty offices and forty employees. In the end, she just didn't want to live with the succession of lies required to justify her otherwise outstanding job performance. Today, she's a certified dog trainer and, I suspect, a lot happier.-Bookviews.comA striking and informative read and recommended for both business and general-interest collections.-The Bookwatch, MidwestBookReview.comIn 1998, Andrea Stanfield told a lie that became the foundation of her professional life. In an interview with the accounting department of a Florida engineering firm, she claimed, verbally and on paper, that she held a bachelors degree in business from a large midwestern university. In fact she had only a high school diploma. Through sheer moxie and impressive interviewing skills, she got the job, and eventually this lie became the steppingstone for a very successful professional life. This is the story of a liar, not a born liar but someone who as a young person full of ambition started taking shortcuts and realized she could get away with it. Blessed with native intelligence and the ability to think quickly on her feet, Andrea navigated her way through professional management circles and a series of salary increases. When the opportunity to move to another company arose, she took the chance of being caught and interviewed again. Faced with a background check, she compounded her previous deceptions by arranging for a very realistic but fake diploma. Once again, the lie worked and she went on to succeed in her new company as never before.Eventually, the girl with the high school diploma ended up as the manager of the two largest financial districts in the firm. Still in her early thirties, she oversaw twenty offices and forty employees, traveled frequently, became an adept public speaker and regional trainer, and was singled out for her leadership talent. In the end, the guilt of living under false pretenses took its toll. Part of her job involved advising employees in annual reviews to go back to school to advance their careers. How could she just look people in the eye and lie? What would she tell her growing daughter someday about the secret of her success?Part confessional, part morality play, this intriguing autobiographical tale of a white lie that snowballs into an avalanche is a warning to personnel managers, employers, and employees that people are not always all that they seem.Andrea Stanfield is the founder of a dog rescue group. Her previous positions included business manager and district administrative manager for two engineering firms

Book excerpt: In this enchanting debut novel, Maggie Pouncey brings to life the unforgettable Flora Dempsey, the headstrong and quick-witted only child of Lewis Dempsey, a beloved former college president and famous literary critic in the league of Harold Bloom. At the news of her father’s death, Flora quits her big-city magazine job and returns to Darwin, the quaint New England town where she grew up, to retreat into the house he has left her, filled as it is with reminders of him. Even weightier is her appointment as her father’s literary executor. It seems he was secretly writing poems at the end of his life—love poems to a girlfriend Flora didn’t know he had. Flora soon discovers that this woman has her own claims on Lewis’s poetry and his memory, and in the righteousness of her loss and bafflement at her father’s secrets—his life so richly separate from her own in ways she never guessed—Flora is highly suspicious of her. Meanwhile, Flora is besieged by well-wishers and literary bloggers alike as she tries to figure out how to navigate it all: the fate of the poems, the girlfriend who wants a place in her life, her memories of her parents’ divorce, and her own uncertain future. At once comic and profound, Perfect Reader is a heady, uplifting story of loneliness and of the spur to growth that grief can be. Brimming with energy and with the elbow-patchy wisdom of her still-vivid father, Flora’s story will set her free to be the “perfect reader” not just of her father’s life but of her own as well.
