Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Health provides a bridge between translation studies and the burgeoning field of health humanities, which seeks novel ways of understanding health and illness. Translation and health intersect in a multitude of settings, historical moments, genres, media and users. This volume brings together topics ranging from interpreting in healthcare settings to translation within medical sciences, from historical and contemporary travels of medicine through translation to areas such as global epidemics, disaster situations, interpreting for children, mental health, women’s health, disability, maternal health, queer feminisms and sexual health, and nutrition. Contributors come from a wide range of disciplines, not only from various branches of translation and interpreting studies, but also from disciplines such as psychotherapy, informatics, health communication, interdisciplinary health science and classical Islamic studies. Divided into four sections and each contribution written by leading international authorities, this timely Handbook is an indispensable resource for all students and researchers of translation and health within translation and interpreting studies, as well as medical and health humanities. Book Using Leaflets to Communicate with the Public about Services and Entitlements

Download or read book Using Leaflets to Communicate with the Public about Services and Entitlements written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-01-25 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) provides services to some 28 million people. Despite the development of new technology, printed materials, in particular leaflets, play an important role in ensuring that customers are informed of services and entitlements. This NAO report examines how effectively the DWP manages the provision of accurate information in its leaflets issued to customers, as well as communicating clearly and effectively about benefits and services. It focuses on how the DWP manages the risks associated with producing and issuing inaccurate leaflets; whether it can ensure that the information in leaflets is accurate and accessible; and whether leaflets are easily available for customers. Findings include that although the DWP has made progress in improving the design of some leaflets, it could go further to make them easier for the public to understand and get hold of, as well as improving checks on the accuracy of leaflets and its supply and printing arrangements so that the most recent versions are widely available.

Book Iron Curtain

    Book Details:
  • Author : Patrick Wright
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2009-10-29
  • ISBN : 0191622842
  • Pages : 540 pages

Download or read book Iron Curtain written by Patrick Wright and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-10-29 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. . .' With these words Winston Churchill famously warned the world in a now legendary speech given in Fulton, Missouri, on March 5, 1946. Launched as an evocative metaphor, the 'Iron Curtain' quickly became a brutal reality in the Cold War between Capitalist West and Communist East. Not surprisingly, for many years, people on both sides of the division have assumed that the story of the Iron Curtain began with Churchill's 1946 speech. In this fascinating investigation, Patrick Wright shows that this was decidedly not the case. Starting with its original use to describe an anti-fire device fitted into theatres, Iron Curtain tells the story of how the term evolved into such a powerful metaphor and the myriad ways in which it shaped the world for decades before the onset of the Cold War. Along the way, it offers fascinating perspectives on a rich array of historical characters and developments, from the lofty aspirations and disappointed fate of early twentieth century internationalists, through the topsy-turvy experiences of the first travellers to Soviet Russia, to the theatricalization of modern politics and international relations. And, as Wright poignantly suggests, the term captures a particular way of thinking about the world that long pre-dates the Cold War - and did not disappear with the fall of the Berlin Wall.
