Book They Always Call Us Ladies

Download or read book They Always Call Us Ladies written by Jean Harris and published by Zebra Books. This book was released on 1993 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean Struven Harris was the perfect headmistress of the posh, exclusive Maderia School for girls in Virginia. Her conservative, well-tailored clothes were suggestive of the impeccable good sense she imparted to her students. But in March of 1980 Jean fell into despair over the end of her 15 year relationship with Dr. Herman Tarnower. She bought a gun, decided to visit Hy and then kill herself. Tragically, the bullets intended for Jean struck Hy. After a 14 week trial Jean Harris was sentenced to 15 years to life in prision. Bad food, cold, dampness, shrieks in the night; Jean Harris's recent life is a far cry from the privilege to which she was accustomed. But amidst the horror and hardship of prision she has recaptured her efficient, motivating energy. She now devotes herself to helping her fellow inmates, including those with children born in prison. More than halfway to her first opportunity for parole, Harris had developed a resilience she didn't know she had. Far away in time and place from the Madeira School, Jean Harris is teaching again, preparing women to face life. They aren't the young ladies from private school, they are convicted felons; but they need her help and she is giving it, while also offering hope in the bleak world she now inhabits. Her students may be prisoners but they are ladies just the same.

Book Doctor Always On Call

Download or read book Doctor Always On Call written by Robert Morris and published by . This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Morris II recorded eight hours of interviews with his father, Robert Morris, MD (1904-1990), from which he drafted an autobiography and presented it to his dad on his 85th birthday. Until Dr. Morris' death 15 months later, they collaborated to correct and add to the original memories. Dr. Morris' career was unique in several ways: He dropped out of medical school twice, returning to farming, then vowed that he'd become a doctor or die. The third time in medical school, he led his class most quarters. Married a nurse and settling in the village of Medina (pop. 400) in 1935, his practice and reputation -- especially as a diagnostician--grew until his death. He made home visits extending to five counties, the last doctor to do so in this area, delivering some 2000 babies in the home, while also serving in four hospitals. He was a devout Christian and lay leader in his church. Two of his daughters married doctors, two others became ending as a writer. Dr. Morris tells both painful and humorous stories about his life.

Book The Zen of Zim

Download or read book The Zen of Zim written by Don Zimmer and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don Zimmer is baseball. His first book, Zim-A Baseball Life, was a New York Times bestseller and one of the best baseball memoirs ever published. Now, in The Zen of Zim, one of baseball's most beloved figures offers readers an insightful look into the baseball of yesterday and today. Baseball fans will love hearing Zim's positions on such things as pitching inside, managing, bosses, and more. With more than fifty-six years in baseball, Don Zimmer had seen it all, or so he thought before he ran into George Steinbrenner. Here Zimmer provides a revealing account of his eight years as Joe Torre's right-hand man-and the jealousy, vindictiveness, and pettiness that ultimately destroyed a twenty-five-year friendship with Steinbrenner. Zim will also discuss the circumstances that led to his charging onto the field at Fenway Park and throwing a haymaker at Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez. He'll share with readers what it was like to work for other baseball owners; shed new light on general managers like Branch Rickey and Dan Duquette; and critique the managing styles of some of the most famous and notorious skippers of the twentieth century, from Casey Stengel and Earl Weaver to Gene Mauch and Billy Martin. In a chapter called "What Have They Done to My Game?," Zim will offer a crash course in baseball anthropology, describing how the game and its players have changed over the past fifty years and showing how big money and free agency have destroyed clubhouse camaraderie and turned a team sport into a transient game. In contrast, he celebrates his close-knit teammates on the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers team and the lifelong friendships that were made. Zim has seen it all, and here readers learn even more of his life and dreams and of baseball through a half century of experience. It is a story jam-packed with laughs and anecdotes, with excitement and comedy. And it is superbly told.
