Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Young Americans were a nationalist movement within the Democratic Party made up of writers and politicians associated with the New York periodical, the Democratic Review. In this revealing book, Mark Power Smith explores the ways in which–in dialogue with its critics–the movement forged contrasting visions of American nationalism in the decades leading up to the Civil War. Frustrated, fifty years after independence, by Britain’s political and cultural influence on the United States, the Young Americans drew on a wide variety of intellectual authorities—in the fields of literature, political science, phrenology and international law—to tie popular sovereignty for white men to the universalist idea of natural rights. The movement supported a noxious program of foreign interventionism, racial segregation, and cultural nationalism. What united these policies was a new view of national allegiance: one that saw democracy and free trade not as political privileges but as natural rights for white men. Despite its national reach, this view of the Union inadvertently turned Northern and Southern states against each other, helping to cultivate the conditions for the Civil War. In the end, the Young America movement was ultimately consumed by the sectional ideologies it had brought into being.

Noted for its clarity, the book includes extended case examples, sample dialogues, quick-reference tables, and "dos and don'ts." It provides vital tools for helping young people open up about their struggles, explore alternatives, and make healthier choices around such concerns as substance use, smoking, anxiety, medication adherence, and obesity. New to This Edition *More integrative and cohesive: every chapter weaves in diverse clinical issues, replacing the prior edition's population-specific chapters. *Chapters on MI in groups and involving caregivers in treatment. *Restructured around the current four-process model of MI, and proposes maintenance of change as a fifth process. *Incorporates the rapidly growing research base on MI with youth. *Reflects the ongoing refinement of the authors' training approach; includes skill-building activities at the end of each chapter. Book Aged Young Adults

Download or read book Aged Young Adults written by Anita Wohlmann and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Toula's father in »My Big Fat Greek Wedding« says to his daughter (age 30) »you look so old« or when Don DeLillo's protagonist (age 28) »feels old« in »Cosmopolis«, these young characters are attributed an age awareness that has received little attention in age studies so far. Leaving aside chronological or biological dimensions of age, this study approaches age as a metaphoric practice, suggesting that »feeling old« is not to be taken literally but metaphorically. The book examines the cultural meanings of age and aging for characters who are in their twenties and thirties and challenges often-quoted labels such as late-coming-of-age story or perpetual adolescence.

This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counterculture, while commonly used to describe youth-oriented movements during the 1960s, refers to any attempt to challenge or change conventional values and practices or the dominant lifestyles of the day. This fascinating three-volume set explores these movements in America from colonial times to the present in colorful detail. "American Countercultures" is the first reference work to examine the impact of countercultural movements on American social history. It highlights the writings, recordings, and visual works produced by these movements to educate, inspire, and incite action in all eras of the nation's history. A-Z entries provide a wealth of information on personalities, places, events, concepts, beliefs, groups, and practices. The set includes numerous illustrations, a topic finder, primary source documents, a bibliography and a filmography, and an index.
