Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Shem finds himself being hunted down, with light from flaming torches and chilling taunts piercing the darkness, all he can do as he lies hidden is whisper a silent, desperate prayer into the night air. After escaping with his life, Shem commits himself to following Yahweh, the God of his father, Noah. But a message of impending judgment is about to change his life—and that of his family—forever. The plans of Yahweh, however, do not end with either Noah or his sons. Shem’s descendants encounter his God again and again. Through the infertility of an elderly, wealthy couple and the call to travel into the unknown. Through a family mired in deceit, jealousy and betrayal. Through a famine and an unlikely rise to power. And as they build their altars to Yahweh on their journeys, His purposes unfold… Using Old Testament stories and imagined scenes woven around them, Altars of Stone follows the lives of Noah, Abraham, Jacob and Joseph, through characters close to them. The book seeks to enrich both new and established readers of the Bible, with geographical, cultural and historical details throughout. This is the first instalment of The Line of Shem trilogy, which aims to build up an overview of the main characters and themes of the Old Testament, showing how they link together. ‘Drawing on her knowledge of the ancient world, Corinne Brixton weaves a story on the basis of the Old Testament narrative, imagining with us how our spiritual ancestors experienced God in a world so different from ours, but equally real. A creative and thought-provoking book.’ – Revd. Dr. David Wenham, MA, PhD, Tutor in New Testament, Trinity College Bristol; author of “The Parables of Jesus” and “Paul and Jesus: The True Story”

Book From Apocalypticism to Merkabah Mysticism

Download or read book From Apocalypticism to Merkabah Mysticism written by Andrei Orlov and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-12-01 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains essays dealing with the Second Temple Jewish traditions and documents preserved solely in their Slavonic translations. It examines these Slavonic pseudepigraphical materials in the context of their mediating role in the development of early Jewish mystical traditions from Second Temple apocalypticism to Merkabah mysticism attested in rabbinic and Hekhalot materials. The book represents the first attempt to study Slavonic pseudepigrapha collectively as a unique group of texts that share common theophanic and mediatorial imagery crucial for the development of early Jewish mysticism. The study demonstrates that mediatorial traditions of the exalted patriarchs and prophets played an important role in facilitating the transition from apocalypticism to early Jewish mysticism.

Book The Iron Age I Structure on Mt Ebal

Download or read book The Iron Age I Structure on Mt Ebal written by Ralph K. Hawkins and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2012-05-25 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Josh 8:30–35, Israel constructs an altar on Mt. Ebal in fulfillment of the command of Deut 27:1–8. This structure had very important social, political, and religious implications for Israel, for it was the first structure to be built after the people entered the land of Canaan. Once the altar was completed, sacrifices were to be offered on it, and a renewal of the covenant was to be carried out (patterned after the ritual of Deut 31:9–13). This covenant renewal was necessary to integrate the people into the covenant who had not been a part of the Sinai experience. The event was significant enough to establish nearby Shechem as the tribal league shrine, and it was the first political and religious ceremony that the Israelites undertook following their entry into the land. As a covenant ratification, it could be described as their ratification as a nation. The altar on Mt. Ebal and its concomitant ceremony were, therefore, according to the claims of the Hebrew Bible, of supreme importance in the life of ancient Israel. In 1980, during the survey of the territory of Manasseh, Israeli archaeologist Adam Zertal discovered a site on Mt. Ebal dating to the period of Iron I, during which the Israelites began to sedentarize in the central hill country of Canaan. The site was excavated over eight seasons, from 1982 to 1989, under the auspices of the University of Haifa and the Israel Exploration Society. In 1985, Zertal published an article in which he suggested that the structure on Ebal may have been the altar of Josh 8:30–35. In The Iron Age I Structure on Mt. Ebal, Ralph Hawkins reviews the excavation on Mt. Ebal and its results, including the scarabs, seals, and animal bones found there. He examines the architecture of the site in relation to Mesopotamian watchtowers, altars, and the descriptions of altars in mishnaic materials, Ezekiel, and Deuteronomic passages. This fascinating book examines the Mt. Ebal site using a comparative method for both the physical data and the textual data. The site and its artifacts are analyzed and then compared with alternative proposals and literary traditions. The site is placed in its broader regional context in order to determine how it might relate to the larger settlement picture of Iron Age I. The primary purpose is to examine the data with a view to determining the nature and function of the site and its possible relation to Josh 8:30–35. A compelling read for biblical and archaeological students and scholars, who will better be able to envision sites of past events.
