The dying Duke took further precautions to ensure tranquillity by asking the cities to approve the innovation of accepting a female ruler. It was the first time that the Third Estate had been recognized as having any political significance in Lorraine, such recognition being the natural sequence of the civil liberty inaugurated by the provisions of the charter of Beaumont. That liberal charter was regarded as the desirable model by all communities when asking incorporated privileges, but not all communities were fortunate enough to wrest its articles, or their equivalent, from their overlords. Rene and Isabella were very lavish in their offers to the nobles, the clergy, and the cities of Lorraine. To the last mentioned they assured the maintenance of all the rights and privileges they had ever enjoyed. Signatures seemed cheap payment for support of a contested inheritance, but the scraps of paper they validated were held up as landmarks for future guidance by the party of the second part, a very tenacious party. From that epoch on, each new duke was compelled to follow a precedent once inaugurated, and the cities were very determined in forcing the fulfilment of pledges made to them when the suzerain was the person obliged. Isabella soon found that the allegiance of the people of Lorraine was not sufficient to ensure her peaceful enjoyment of her paternal inheritance. Her father had had a brother, the Duke of Vaudemont, that brother had a son, Anthony, who protested that a male fief was a thing that could not lightly be set aside by the mere acquiescence of vassals.
