Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides detailed information on the different forms of injury that are associated with training for and participation in Alpine skiing, covering risk factors and epidemiology, incidence, injury patterns, and, above all, preventive strategies and current management approaches. Conditions addressed in individual chapters include concussion, traumatic dislocations due to high-energy trauma or inappropriate movements, overuse injuries resulting from dry-land training or skiing on snow, the fractures typically associated with present-day Alpine skiing accidents, and musculoskeletal disorders. The importance of a sound understanding of biomechanics and physiological systems for the design of suitable training protocols and trauma prevention is clearly explained, and in-depth information and guidance are provided on training and testing for elite skiers and return to sporting activity following injury. Among the other topics addressed in individual chapters are the relationship of changes in skiing equipment over recent decades to particular types of injury and the potential consequences of exposure to hypobaric hypoxia and other stressors at high altitude. The book will be of great value to all medical professionals who work with or care for Alpine skiers, as well as for trainers and the skiers themselves.

Book Alpine Skiing Injuries

Download or read book Alpine Skiing Injuries written by FL. Allman and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To ensure the maximum level of safety for alpine skiers, conditions and factors that predispose to injury need to be identified. This study surveyed potential risk factors for injury in a closed population of skiers using well-defined criteria for injury. Thirteen percent of those skiers answering the survey sustained an injury. The injury rate was 24 per 1000 skier days. Most injuries occurred on the first day of skiing. Icy conditions and fatigue appeared to predispose skiers to injury. The shoulder and knee were the most common anatomical sites of injury. Factors such as age, sex, level of ability, and conditioning, which have been implicated in previous studies as risk factors for injury in alpine skiing, did not appear to predispose the skier to injury in this controlled study.

Book Significant Gender Differences in Alpine Skiing Injuries

Download or read book Significant Gender Differences in Alpine Skiing Injuries written by EP. France and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A retrospective analysis of ski injuries at a large Utah ski area was conducted to identify injury trends and to corroborate information from previous comparable studies. A total of 5360 injuries were treated at the ski area base clinic between 1989 and 1993. The overall injury rate was approximately 2.1 per 1000 skier visits. Knee injuries were the most prevelant injury type, accounting for 43% of all injuries. Significant differences with previously published literature were noted in mean and median age of injured skiers, indicating demographic differences among the injured population at ski areas. Distributional analyses of injury diagnosis broken down by sex revealed significant differences between ski area injury rates and types both overall and between men and women, and demonstrate the need for multiarea studies aimed at identifying trends associated with terrain, snow conditions, and skier demographics. A prospective study begun in 1991 will attempt to quantify the significant differences between male and female skiing injuries at this ski area and will expand to several areas in close proximity for further study.

Book Gender Differences in Alpine Skiing Injuries

Download or read book Gender Differences in Alpine Skiing Injuries written by RM. Greenwald and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have previously reported on gender differences in injury patterns at a large Utah ski resort. A total of 7307 injuries during 1989 to 1995 (53% men, 47% women) have been treated at the emergency clinic at the resort base. This study was an attempt to determine if there are factors related to skier demographics or conditions surrounding a knee injury that might be relevant to attempts to reduce the high incidence of these injuries. An analysis of our prospective data including 817 knee injuries over the past three ski seasons indicated that there are significant differences in demographics and injury descriptions between men and women who seriously injure their knee. Knee injury type and degree of ligamentous rupture were compared to gender, age, skier ability, direction of fall, and binding release as reported by the skier immediately following the injury. Only those injuries sustained while skiing were included. A total of 536 women and 281 men sustained knee injuries, with 55% and 43%, respectively, of these injuries being a Grade III rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). There was a statistically significant difference in the number of knee injuries compared to all injuries between men and women (p
