The program is nutritional therapy, a personal technology of health restoration and health maintenance. The development of the Alpha Nutrition Program began many years ago with observation that some food-selection patterns are associated with dysfunction and disease. In one person, for example, the daily ingestion of multigrain bread, milk, cheese, bran muffins, beef, coffee, orange juice, and wine is associated with chronic fatigue, sleepiness after eating, nose congestion, flushing, headaches, generalized aching, stiffness, and episodes of unexplained depression. When the food list is changed to rice, vegetables, chicken, peaches, and pears, the symptoms disappear and the person reports increased energy and a renewed sense of well-being. Similar observations are reported in a large sample of people of all ages. A variety of other dysfunctional patterns are found to improve with proper diet revision. We reasoned that everyone probably has a small set of best-fit foods that would allow them to feel and function optimally. The first goal of therapy should then be to identify the simplest set of best foods for each person. The core- concept further developed as we kept score of adverse food reactions reported by patients and found that rice and common, cooked vegetables were among the best tolerated and most acceptable of all food choices.

The book is available in printed and eBook editions and interfaces with the Alpha Nutrition Program, a standard method of diet revision From the Introduction There are at least 100 million people in the USA and Canada that have recurrent, long-term gastrointestinal symptoms. Abdominal pain, distension with excess gas, constipation and diarrhea are the four prominent symptoms. Most members of this large group will self-medicate and suffer long-term. Some will receive the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome along with inappropriate advice and medication with limited efficacy. Some will emerge from this large symptomatic group with well defined disease. The rest of the symptomatic population will remain by default sufferers of the irritable bowel syndrome. Most members of this symptomatic group will have other dysfunction associated with and probably caused by their digestive problems. Crohns disease, Celiac disease and Ulcerative Colitis are three of the more serious diagnoses. These digestive tract diseases are immune-mediated, with increased permeability of the digestive tract, and are associated with a long list of whole body, immune-mediated diseases. Patients with these conditions are often symptomatic for many years before the diagnosis is made. The main difference between Celiac and Crohns disease is that celiac patients are told to change their diet and improve when they remove gluten from their diet; Crohns patients are not told to change their diet and often follow a deteriorating path of chronic disease, some with episodic crises that require surgery, prolonged hospitalization and permanent disability. We believe these conditions are related in terms of disease causing mechanisms and recommend that all groups of patients follow a similar protocol of diet revision. The main difference is that acute inflammation of the bowel wall in a Crohns patient can be dangerous and requires a food holiday sometimes for several weeks. Food is replaced by Alpha ENF with optional additional nutrients.

Fermented, liquid foods that contain alcohol are used worldwide in parties, celebrations and rituals. It is common for fermented foods to be included in the daily diet. Small doses of fermented foods relax inhibitions and can feel pleasant in social situations. Larger doses are toxic to the brain and disable the drinker. The regular abuse of alcoholic beverages is called "alcoholism. The stigma attached to the term "alcoholism" remains an obstacle to understanding this common problem. There is a tendency to deny or to "normalize" excessive drinking. The use of alcoholic beverages is woven into the fabric of society and excessive use of alcohol is often considered "normal. Ingestion of alcoholic beverage in excess produces many disease patterns involving every part of the body. Even “moderate” alcohol abuse distorts the personality, emotions and intellect of the "social drinker." The cognitive impairments and personality distortion are a direct consequence of brain dysfunction cause by ethanol and other chemical pathogens in alcoholic beverages. Alcohol abuse is considered to be an addiction and some argue about calling alcoholism a “disease.” The term “addiction” refers both the compulsive aspect of drinking and also to the harm drinking causes. The drinker harms himself, his family and the community at large. A reasonable person will notice the harm he or she is causing and will seek to remedy the problem. An addict ignores the harm and remains devoted to ingesting alcoholic beverages no matter how much harm is caused. Intoxication with alcoholic beverages generates behaviors that are regrettable and often destructive. Drunk people do much harm to themselves and others. The main drug effect is exerted by ethanol on the brain. As blood levels of ethanol increase, more and more brain functions are shut-down, rendering the intoxicant temporarily demented, with inappropriate behavior, incoordination and poor judgment. Alcohol intoxication routinely promotes fighting, assaults and death by accident or murder.

Food choices have been changing rapidly and will continue to change for personal health reasons, but also in the next decades, we will change collectively. Some changes will be voluntarily and others will well be imposed on us by shifting economics, political upheavals, climate changes, population growth, and crop failures. In the 20 years since this book was first written, food supply networks have become increasingly complicated and vulnerable. Dramatic economic events in 2008 included sudden jumps in food prices with hoarding of staples such as rice. Food shortages have been common in third world countries. Climate changes introduce new complications in food production and distribution. I expect that even the more affluent countries will encounter food shortages and price instability in decades to come. The entire planet needs to restore local agriculture based on sustainable methods. Cities that are not surrounded by local sources of food and water will be the first to experience supply crises. If your premise is that foods in common use are good foods, healthy for everyone to eat, you will be disappointed. On the other hand, if you premise is that foods are too dangerous to eat; you will lead an unhappy and malnourished life. A balanced point of view is developed in the Alpha Nutrition Program. The most reliable policy is that people should eat plant foods that have been in common use for centuries. Vegetables and fruits provide good nutrition and have additional benefits. Non-nutrient chemicals in plants can add unexpected benefits when included in the diet. These non-nutrient substances are now referred to as "phytochemicals" which just means, "plant chemicals". The fruits and vegetables included in Phase 1 and 2 of the Alpha Nutrition Program are all the award-winning, protective foods. There is a negative group of phytochemicals, however, and this book illustrates some of the potential problems and their solution.
