His muscles tensed with anger as he turned and stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him. Olive's heart raced as she curled into a ball. Wayne Knight was terrifying... but why did part of her wish he was still staring at her? Olive tried to calm herself, but her wolf was still on high alert, savoring Wayne's scent. Book excerpt: Poetry. African American Studies. LGBT Studies. PLEASE explores the points in our lives at which love and violence intersect. Drunk on its own rhythms and full of imaginative and often frightening imagery, PLEASE is the album playing in the background of the history and culture that surround African American/male identity and sexuality. Just as radio favorites like Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, and Pink Floyd characterize loss, loneliness, addiction, and denial with their voices, these poems' chorus of speakers transform moments of intimacy and humor into spontaneous music. In PLEASE, Jericho Brown sings the influence soul culture has on American life with the accuracy of the blues.

Book The Missing Century

  • Publisher : Peeters Publishers
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9789068319859
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book The Missing Century written by Zeev Safrai and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Byzantine period is one of the less known periods in the history of Palestine. On the one hand, there is a wealth of archaeological evidence, albeit not in a final form; while, on the other hand, there are few historical sources. There is evidence of prosperity, but also testimonies of economic and demographic deterioration. The book offers a comprehensive historical framework describing the period, based on all the available material. In the absence of historical sources, full use must be made of the archaeological data; until the present, however, chronological definitions have not been determined for "Byzantine" pottery vessels. The book makes use of a new methodological tool: quantitative numismatic data.

Book Ancient Mosaic Pavements

Download or read book Ancient Mosaic Pavements written by Rāḥēl Ḥaḵlîlî and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is engaged in issues, trends, and themes depicted on mosaic pavements discovered in Israel, the Gaza Strip and Petra (the provinces of ancient Palaestina Prima, Secunda and Tertia) with comparable floors in Jordan (Arabia). The majority of the mosaic pavements discussed in this study are dated to the 4th-8th centuries CE. Mosaic pavements were the normal medium for decorating the floors of synagogues, churches, monasteries, and chapels, as well as public and private buildings. Inscriptions found on many of the pavements commemorate the donors, refer to the artists, and sometimes date the mosaics. The ornamentation of the mosaics in this region is remarkable, rich, and varied in its themes and provides many insights into the contemporary artistic and social cultures.

Book The Menorah the Ancient Seven armed Candelabrum

Download or read book The Menorah the Ancient Seven armed Candelabrum written by Rachel Hachlili and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The menorah was the most important and dominant symbol in Jewish art, both in the Land of Israel and the Diaspora. The menorah was an integral part of the Temple ritual and was the most important of the Temple vessels. Its later representation served the purpose of reminding the Jews of their previous glory as well as their pride in the Temple, and expressed the longing and hope for the renewal of the Temple services and worship. Following the destruction of the Temple, the menorah took on the profound significance of the Temple. It also came to symbolize Judaism, when it was necessary to distinguish synagogues, Jewish tombs, and catacombs from Christian or pagan structures in the Land of Israel and the Diaspora . The menorah image has been found depicted in synagogues, public buildings, homes, and the funerary context throughout the Land of Israel and the Diaspora, leaving no doubt as to which are Jewish structures. The prominent position of the menorah in Jewish art emphasizes its significance. The book is presenting the art, archaeological, historical and literary evidence for the development, form, meaning, and significance of the menorah during the Second Temple period and the Late Antiquity.

Book Rediscovering the Marys

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mary Ann Beavis
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2020-01-23
  • ISBN : 056768346X
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Rediscovering the Marys written by Mary Ann Beavis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary volume of text and art offers new insights into various unsolved mysteries associated with Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany, Mary the Mother of Jesus, and Miriam the sister of Moses. Mariamic traditions are often interconnected, as seen in the portrayal of these women as community leaders, prophets, apostles and priests. These traditions also are often inter-religious, echoing themes back to Miriam in the Hebrew Bible as well as forward to Maryam in the Qur'an. The chapters explore questions such as: which biblical Mary did the author of the Gospel of Mary intend to portray-Magdalene, Mother, or neither? Why did some writers depict Mary of Nazareth as a priest? Were extracanonical scriptures featuring Mary more influential than the canonical gospels on the depiction of Maryam in the Qur'an? Contributors dig deep into literature, iconography, and archaeology to offer cutting edge research under three overarching topics. The first section examines the question of "which Mary?" and illustrates how some ancient authors (and contemporary scholars) may have conflated the biblical Marys. The second section focuses on Mary of Nazareth, and includes research related to the portrayal of Mary the Mother of Jesus as a Eucharistic priest. The final section, “Recovering Receptions of Mary in Art, Archeology, and Literature,” explores how artists and authors have engaged with one or more of the Marys, from the early Christian era through to medieval and modern times.
