Excerpt: Huaynaputina (from Quechua: , meaning "Young Volcano"; Pronounced: -naw--tee-) is a stratovolcano located in a volcanic upland in southern Peru. The volcano does not have an identifiable mountain profile, but instead has the form of a large volcanic crater. It has produced high-potassium andesite and dacite. On 19 February 1600, it exploded catastrophically (Volcanic Explosivity Index-or VEI-6), in the largest volcanic explosion in South America in historic times. The eruption continued with a series of events into March. An account of the event was included in Fray Antonio Vazquez de Espinosa's Compendio y Descripcion de las Indias, which was translated into English as Compendium and description of the West Indies in 1942. Huaynaputina lies in Southern Peru's Moquegua Region, 80 kilometres (50 mi) southeast of Arequipa. The volcano is part of the Central Volcanic Zone, the segment of the Andes running through Peru and Chile. It is north of at least one more caldera complex with a resurgent dome. Despite the volcano's listed elevation of 4,800 metres (15,748 ft), Huaynaputina has very little prominence, less than 1,000 metres (3,281 ft). Book Alpamayo to Everest It s Not about the Summit

Download or read book Alpamayo to Everest It s Not about the Summit written by Ian Hibbert and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-11-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ian Hibbert chronicles his adventures climbing the world's highest mountains in this gripping series of tales that reveals the power of grit, determination, and will. Filled with pictures, these memoirs delve into the challenges he overcame climbing the exotic mountains of the South American Andes, Nepal, Tibet, Pakistan, Africa, and New Zealand. At each stop, he enriched his body and soul. In the Peruvian mountains, he paid little mind to the Sendero Luminoso terrorists, even though a police chief guarded the group at the Los Portales Hotel. When a member of the group needed to convert U.S. dollars to Peruvian Intis at the bank, the National Police were employed to guard the delivery. At Cho Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain in the world at the Tibet-Nepal border of the Himalayan range, he was almost arrested and thrown into the brig amid the SARS outbreak when he was found to have an elevated temperature at a border crossing.

Book Find Your Own Mountains

Download or read book Find Your Own Mountains written by Paul Samuel and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we live a full and satisfying life? How do we know what we can excel at? How do we start believing that we have many options? Find Your Own Mountains is a collection of stories from Paul's travels and exploits which he diarised throughout his life, and which greatly contributed to the discovery of his own capabilities and the formation of his character. He distils the essence of his learnings in a sequence of 18 letters to his daughter, written for her eighteenth birthday, as she embarks on her adult life. But the letters and stories resonate with all of us, regardless of our age and background. There are tales of challenging outdoor adventures alongside accounts of running with the bulls in Pamplona on a hangover, or humorous episodes from his late-teenage gap year tour. Each new situation, whether it was negotiating his way through the wilderness of Canada, being knocked about on the deck of a sailing boat by murderous winds in the South China Sea, trying in vain to fight mosquitoes and leeches in the Borneo jungle, or negotiating a friend's release from a Thai police station after a boozy night in Bangkok as a young lad, leads to another step in self-discovery and the revelation of potential to be explored further. Written in a beautiful, accessible and engaging style, Find Your Own Mountains is a deeply moving, inspirational, philosophically enriching book that might not only help readers live a fuller life but also encourage them to explore the literary works of classical thinkers, other adventurers and poets who greatly influenced its author. In Find Your Own Mountains, Paul Samuel, explorer, businessman and serial successful entrepreneur, shows that the key to finding answers is understanding your character and your potential by actively seeking opportunities to expose yourself to the unfamiliar. Begin with the smallest of steps to open yourself to trying something novel and get out of your comfortable daily routine, and you will be amazed what you can unearth about yourself, and how many doors of new possibilities can open for you.

Book excerpt: William C. Borland started his adulthood hiking up all forty-six peaks of the Adirondack Mountains. Before long, the more adventurous individuals in his group began to hike the high points of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Then, they began talking about how to hike the 2,160-mile-long Georgia-to-Maine Appalachian Trail. After reading Seven Summits by Frank Wells and Dick Bass, who detailed how they climbed the highest mountain on each continent, Borland was inspired to set his sights even higher. Suddenly, it seemed possible for a mere mortal without superhuman climbing strength or skills to scale the highest mountains, and he decided to climb Mount McKinley (now known as Denali) in Alaska. From there, he began mountaineering and riding his bicycle on all seven continents.
