Book Along the Rio Grande Classic Reprint

Download or read book Along the Rio Grande Classic Reprint written by Tracy Hammond Lewis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Along the Rio Grande To gather material for this book the author wan dered in July and August, 1916, along the Rio Grande as a warless war correspondent. Disappointed in the absence of sanguinary battles, he turned his attention to the less bloodthirsty inhabitants and the country in which they lived, and felt it had been worth the journey. What he has said concerning them was written hastily from day to day for the New York Morning Tele graph, to which he is indebted for the permission to reprint it. He does not offer this book for literary merits, nor has he any message to convey. For this he apologizes. He has described conditions only as he found them and persons whom he has met, without coloring to suit a purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of the Lower Rio Grande Valley The present generation of Americans has known very little of that part of their country which lies along the Rio Grande and has had no realization of the ofttimes stirring scenes which have been enacted along their southern border. At different periods in the past the country has been stirred by the dramatic episodes and the conflicts growing out of the meeting of two entirely dissimilar peoples in that land of cactus and mesquite. But the present generation has known and thought little of that country until the conflict between these two races again blazed out and made the Rio Grande border once more a household topic in every village and every home in the United States. Download or read book On a Mexican Mustang Through Texas from the Gulf to the Rio Grande Classic Reprint written by Alex Edwin Sweet and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On a Mexican Mustang, Through Texas, From the Gulf to the Rio Grande They called him a desperado and a gambler. They said that he "always went heeled, toted a derringer, and was a bad crowd generally." It was rumored that he had killed five, eight, some said ten men during his short career; yet no one would have thought, to look at the well-dressed young man, mild of manner, and careful as to the parting of his hair, that he was the fire-eater he was reputed to be. He was as unlike the gory desperado of "the villain-still-pursued-her" style of literature as a divinity student is unlike the life-insurance agent of real life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Valley of the Rio Grande: Its Topography and Resources In 1821, the Mexicans ventured to throw off the yoke of Spain, and a plan of national independence was de clared at Iguala. General Iturbide declared himself Emperor soon afterwards. This was the first in a series of pronunciamentos, reactions, and revolutions, which have arrested the progress and checked the growth of this magnificent country; but it is only just to observe that all the struggles have sprung from the stern resolve of the Mexicans not to submit in peace or quiet to the yoke of the stranger, to the absolute rule which priest and captain alike sought to impose. Book Reframing the Northern Rio Grande Pueblo Economy

Download or read book Reframing the Northern Rio Grande Pueblo Economy written by Scott Ortman and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rio Grande pueblo societies took shape in the aftermath of significant turmoil and migration in the thirteenth century. In the centuries that followed, the size of Pueblo settlements, level of aggregation, degree of productive specialization, extent of interethnic exchange, and overall social harmony increased to unprecedented levels. Economists recognize scale, agglomeration, the division of labor, international trade, and control over violence as important determinants of socioeconomic development in the modern world. But is a development framework appropriate for understanding Rio Grande archaeology? What do we learn about contemporary Pueblo culture and its resiliency when Pueblo history is viewed through this lens? What does the exercise teach us about the determinants of economic growth more generally? The contributors in this volume argue that ideas from economics and complexity science, when suitably adapted, provide a compelling approach to the archaeological record. Contributors consider what we can learn about socioeconomic development through archaeology and explore how Pueblo culture and institutions supported improvements in the material conditions of life over time. They examine demographic patterns; the production and exchange of food, cotton textiles, pottery, and stone tools; and institutional structures reflected in village plans, rock art, and ritual artifacts that promoted peaceful exchange. They also document change through time in various economic measures and consider their implications for theories of socioeconomic development. The archaeological record of the Northern Rio Grande exhibits the hallmarks of economic development, but Pueblo economies were organized in radically different ways than modern industrialized and capitalist economies. This volume explores the patterns and determinants of economic development in pre-Hispanic Rio Grande Pueblo society, building a platform for more broadly informed research on this critical process.

Book excerpt: A New Mexico PI tries to stop a cult leader’s murderous rampage in “a fascinating hybrid of detective story, adventure yarn, and shamanistic magic.” —Kirkus Reviews The world-famous International Balloon Fiesta of Albuquerque is one of the city’s most eagerly anticipated annual events and its biggest moneymaker. But when a woman plunges to her death from one of the balloons—foreshadowed by Sonny Baca’s vision of a body plummeting from the sky—Sonny’s sure it’s murder. Worthy was one of the four wives of Raven, leader of the sun cult, and a dangerous, shamanlike criminal who’s supposed to be dead. But the four black feathers found on the corpse are his calling card—clues to let Sonny know he’s alive and kicking. And his murder spree isn’t over. Now, led by his spirit guides, Sonny must race to stop a vengeful madman and save the woman he loves. From the American Book Award–winning author, this is “a completely entertaining mystery novel [that] offers two parallel lands of enchantment” (Booklist).

Book Our Army on the Rio Grande

Download or read book Our Army on the Rio Grande written by T. B. Thorpe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Army on the Rio Grande: Being a Short Account of the Important Events Transpiring From the Time of the Removal of the "Army of Occupation" From Corpus Christi, to the Surrender of Matamoros The events treated of in this work, are of too recent occurrence, and of an interest too absorbing, to require a preface. The author was among those who were deeply excited by the stirring incidents connected with our little army on the Rio Grande, in the months of April and May, 1846, and he was on the battle fields, and among the heroes, almost immediately after the occurrences that have rendered them immortal in the history of the country. The idea of writing the following little volume, was suggested by the accumulation of materials, collected for the transient purpose of varying the columns of a daily paper, and urged on by the honorable wish to record some of the noble deeds of our soldiers, that might otherwise be forgotten. The author is indebted to several officers of high standing in the army for facilities of obtaining information, among whom he would mention, in the most respectful terms, Major Gen. Gaines and Gen. Worth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
