Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dug by hardworking men in the late 1820s, the Morris Canal is considered to be an engineering marvel. Comprised of 34 locks and 23 inclined planes, it created a waterway from the Delaware River in Phillipsburg, across northern New Jersey, and down into the Hudson River in Jersey City. It was drained in 1924, with its prisms mostly filled in. The 1960s brought a steadfast movement for the preservation of the largely buried Morris Canal, including the historic Silas Riggs Saltbox House being rescued from demolition and later the opening of the restored Waterloo Village. These challenging years set in motion the formation of organizations and societies dedicated to protecting, restoring, and preserving the Morris Canal. Through the persistent efforts and dedication of historians, canal enthusiasts, and neighboring communities, the Morris Canal and its buried history are gradually being unearthed. This book captures the Morris Canal's original pathway and its restoration and preservation accomplishments.

Book excerpt: The Morris Canal was not the longest canal in the world, but it did have one superlative to its credit--it climbed higher than any other canal ever built. In its time it was world famous, visited by tourists and technical people from as far away as Europe and Asia. For nearly 100 years it crossed the hills of northern New Jersey, accomplishing that feat with 23 lift locks and 23 inclined planes. From Lake Hopatcong, the canal ran westward through the Musconetcong valley to Phillipsburg, on the Delaware River, and eastward through the valleys of the Rockaway and Passaic rivers to tidewater at Newark and Jersey City--a little over 100 miles horizontally and a total rise and fall of nearly 1,700 feet vertically. The Morris Canal, once an important soldier in the American Industrial Revolution, has been gone for most of the twentieth century, but its memory lives on in the many photographs, postcards, and other memorabilia that its unique presence inspired.

This book was released on 2021 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denville in the 1950s was an idyllic place to live, yet a dark chapter in the era's history has remained uncovered. During the summer of 1953, a wealthy traveler with a secret rap sheet as a convicted sex offender arrived in town to continue his misdeeds. A group of thirteen local boys ranging in age from fourteen to twenty-two took it upon themselves to teach the man a lesson and drive him out of town. What resulted was his brutal death and the largest number of people ever indicted for murder in the nation at the time. The harrowing trial and its aftermath revealed a town forced to grapple with how to protect its youth and come to terms with the gruesome incident. Local historian Peter Zablocki covers the crime and a small town's path to redemption.

Book excerpt: The Central Railroad of New Jersey's Seashore Branch provided rail and boat services from New York City to points along the New Jersey Shore. It discontinued passenger service in 1966, with the last freight train operating in 1983. Official abandonment proceedings sparked the need to keep the right of way for future mass transit needs. This led to interim use. Today, the area is called the Henry Hudson Trail and is one of over 500 parks referred to nationally as a Rail-Trail. This free, ten-mile-long, hiking, biking, and walking trail is administered by the Monmouth County Parks System, and connects several towns of the Raritan Bay shore area. This rare look will enlighten trail users through images of views gone forever, while pointing out structures still in place. Over 200 images are set in geographical sequence to guide the reader along the trail.
