Book excerpt: I fell in love with a goth, but she’s a witch. Starting school at Hawthorne University was not going well, until I met my classmate Alondra. Allie was different. She was goth. But she was also mysterious, confident and fun. I was into that. My name’s Liam. My friends call me Lee. Things got weird after I accompanied her to her haunts. Poltergeists and demons attacked little girls. I watched Alondra help exorcise these ghosts, but some of their evil stuck to me. Well, being attracted to a witch was one thing; dating one was quite another. It seemed the closer I got to Allie, the more her witchcraft endangered my friends. And my soul. You decide. I chronicled everything here in her book. Alondra is a prequel to the internationally bestselling Hawthorne University Witch series. The novel takes place twenty years before Broomstick. Content warning: Alondra is a new adult college paranormal romance containing profanity, sexual scenes, adult situations, and, of course, witchcraft.

Book excerpt: Believe in witches, for sometimes you need magic to ward off the evil in darkness. It was my junior year at Hawthorne University when Mira dealt me a reversed Lovers card. That meant trouble in paradise. I thought nothing of it until Alondra introduced me to a new witch from outside our coven—Enora. Enora's precisely the sort of witch you'd call wicked. Even worse, she used to be in love with my boyfriend. I just wanted a normal year. But as our leader fought illness, I fought with my friends trying to hold the Hawthorne coven together. I felt abandoned. And my loneliness dropped me into trances where I wandered the dark forest alone. These altered states were created by my magic, but I learned that they were spurred on by something far more sinister. Where did this evil come from? The wicked witch? The old devil? I had to find out because it threatened the people I love. Windstorm is the sequel to Broomstick —Book 2 in the Hawthorne University Witch Series. The books in this series are complete self-contained novels not ending in cliffhangers. Some spoilers cannot be avoided, but Windstorm is a stand-alone novel that can be enjoyed without reading the first book. Content warning: Windstorm is a new adult college paranormal romance containing profanity, sexual scenes, adult situations, and, of course, witchcraft.

Book excerpt: Beltane Fire is a Short Story taking place a year prior to Broomstick. It was my freshman year when my best friend introduced me to the spring festival in Hawthorne University. I was studying for finals, but she said everyone, absolutely everyone, goes to Beltane. Because Hawthorne is weird. Men in red paint jumped flames. Ladies in white dresses with lovely flower garlands awaited the May Queen. But none of that interested me—until I decorated a tree with a super cute guy. We danced around the tree and had so much fun. But then I saw fire. And within the flames were disturbing images. Even with the spark between me and my new stranger, it had to end. I think that was the day my witchcraft began—you know, the fire that burns in my heart and soul. Cadence Hawthorne returns in this novelette short story taking place before Broomstick, the first novel in The Hawthorne University Witch Series. This story first appeared exclusively as a free ebook for subscribers of the author's monthly newsletter and on A.L. Hawke's website. Download or read book Data Feminism written by Catherine D'Ignazio and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new way of thinking about data science and data ethics that is informed by the ideas of intersectional feminism. Today, data science is a form of power. It has been used to expose injustice, improve health outcomes, and topple governments. But it has also been used to discriminate, police, and surveil. This potential for good, on the one hand, and harm, on the other, makes it essential to ask: Data science by whom? Data science for whom? Data science with whose interests in mind? The narratives around big data and data science are overwhelmingly white, male, and techno-heroic. In Data Feminism, Catherine D'Ignazio and Lauren Klein present a new way of thinking about data science and data ethics—one that is informed by intersectional feminist thought. Illustrating data feminism in action, D'Ignazio and Klein show how challenges to the male/female binary can help challenge other hierarchical (and empirically wrong) classification systems. They explain how, for example, an understanding of emotion can expand our ideas about effective data visualization, and how the concept of invisible labor can expose the significant human efforts required by our automated systems. And they show why the data never, ever “speak for themselves.” Data Feminism offers strategies for data scientists seeking to learn how feminism can help them work toward justice, and for feminists who want to focus their efforts on the growing field of data science. But Data Feminism is about much more than gender. It is about power, about who has it and who doesn't, and about how those differentials of power can be challenged and changed.

Book excerpt: After Beth Stewart's parents got divorce, she lived with her father during the summers on a ranch in the high-mountain plains of Northern Arizona. This was where she met and fell in love with Monty Jarrett. They both enrolled in the same university and were happy until her mother encouraged her to date other boys. Devastated, Monty felt like he could no longer be near her. With the war in Vietnam still raging, the young cowboy joined the army rather than to wait to be drafted. Matt Stryker, Beth's illegitimate half brother, took over his mother's real estate business in Phoenix, Arizona. On a trip to visit family, Matt met Laura Patterson, a chef from San Francisco. He proposed to her a few months later, and Laura accepted. But she was unaware that Matt still struggled with the love he had lost. Raised by her grandparents in Germany, Marthe Lange never knew the mother that gave birth to her or the father that abandoned her. After the death of her grandmother, Marthe journeyed to San Diego, California, as an exchange student. Knowing that her father lived close by, she wrote to him. And a few days later, Monty Jarrett came to meet the daughter he had never known. This is the story of five people, their lives woven together over time. Decisions were made, loved ones lost, and new ones found. Eventually, the paths of these people will emerge, fate inevitably drawing them together across the bands of time, tearing at the fabric of their emotions.
