Book Convolution Operators and Factorization of Almost Periodic Matrix Functions

Download or read book Convolution Operators and Factorization of Almost Periodic Matrix Functions written by Albrecht Böttcher and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many problems of the engineering sciences, physics, and mathematics lead to con volution equations and their various modifications. Convolution equations on a half-line can be studied by having recourse to the methods and results of the theory of Toeplitz and Wiener-Hopf operators. Convolutions by integrable kernels have continuous symbols and the Cauchy singular integral operator is the most prominent example of a convolution operator with a piecewise continuous symbol. The Fredholm theory of Toeplitz and Wiener-Hopf operators with continuous and piecewise continuous (matrix) symbols is well presented in a series of classical and recent monographs. Symbols beyond piecewise continuous symbols have discontinuities of oscillating type. Such symbols emerge very naturally. For example, difference operators are nothing but convolution operators with almost periodic symbols: the operator defined by (A

Book Spectra of Random and Almost Periodic Operators

Download or read book Spectra of Random and Almost Periodic Operators written by Leonid Pastur and published by Springer. This book was released on 1991-12-16 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last fifteen years the spectral properties of the Schrodinger equation and of other differential and finite-difference operators with random and almost-periodic coefficients have attracted considerable and ever increasing interest. This is so not only because of the subject's position at the in tersection of operator spectral theory, probability theory and mathematical physics, but also because of its importance to theoretical physics, and par ticularly to the theory of disordered condensed systems. It was the requirements of this theory that motivated the initial study of differential operators with random coefficients in the fifties and sixties, by the physicists Anderson, 1. Lifshitz and Mott; and today the same theory still exerts a strong influence on the discipline into which this study has evolved, and which will occupy us here. The theory of disordered condensed systems tries to describe, in the so-called one-particle approximation, the properties of condensed media whose atomic structure exhibits no long-range order. Examples of such media are crystals with chaotically distributed impurities, amorphous substances, biopolymers, and so on. It is natural to describe the location of atoms and other characteristics of such media probabilistically, in such a way that the characteristics of a region do not depend on the region's position, and the characteristics of regions far apart are correlated only very weakly. An appropriate model for such a medium is a homogeneous and ergodic, that is, metrically transitive, random field.

Book Abstract Band Method Via Factorization Positive and Band Extensions of Multivariable Almost Periodic Matrix Functions and Spectral Estimation

Download or read book Abstract Band Method Via Factorization Positive and Band Extensions of Multivariable Almost Periodic Matrix Functions and Spectral Estimation written by L. Rodman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002-09-25 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New versions are developed of an abstract scheme, which are designed to provide a framework for solving a variety of extension problems. The abstract scheme is commonly known as the band method. The main feature of the new versions is that they express directly the conditions for existence of positive band extensions in terms of abstract factorizations (with certain additional properties). The results allow us to prove, among other things, that the band extension is continuous in an appropriate sense. Using the new versions of the abstract band method, we solve the positive extension problem for almost periodic matrix functions of several real variables with Fourier coefficients indexed in a given additive subgroup of the space of variables. This generality allows us to treat simultaneously many particular cases, for example the case of functions periodic in some variables and almost periodic in others. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of positive extensions in terms of Toeplitz operators on Besikovitch spaces. Furthermore, when a solution exists a special extension (the band extension) is constructed which enjoys a maximum entropy property. A linear fractional parameterization of the set of all extensions is also provided. We interpret the obtained results (in the periodic case) in terms of existence of a multivariate autoregressive moving averages (ARMA) process with given autocorrelation coefficients, and identify its maximal prediction error. Another application concerns the solution of the positive extension problem in the context of Wiener algebra of infinite operator matrices. It includes the identification of the maximum entropy extension and a description of all positive extensions via a linear fractional formula. In the periodic case it solves a linear estimation problem for cyclostationary stochastic processes.

Each chapter ends with a survey of the present state of the theory, making this a valuable work for the beginning graduate student and established researcher alike. With biographies of the principal creators of the theory and historical context also woven into the text, this book is a complete source on Toeplitz theory.

Book Introduction to the Spectral Theory of Polynomial Operator Pencils

Download or read book Introduction to the Spectral Theory of Polynomial Operator Pencils written by A. S. Markus and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph contains an exposition of the foundations of the spectral theory of polynomial operator pencils acting in a Hilbert space. Spectral problems for polynomial pencils have attracted a steady interest in the last 35 years, mainly because they arise naturally in such diverse areas of mathematical physics as differential equations and boundary value problems, controllable systems, the theory of oscillations and waves, elasticity theory, and hydromechanics. In this book, the author devotes most of his attention to the fundamental results of Keldysh on multiple completeness of the eigenvectors and associate vectors of a pencil, and on the asymptotic behavior of its eigenvalues and generalizations of these results. The author also presents various theorems on spectral factorization of pencils which grew out of known results of M. G. Krein and Heinz Langer. A large portion of the book involves the theory of selfadjoint pencils, an area having numerous applications. Intended for mathematicians, researchers in mechanics, and theoretical physicists interested in spectral theory and its applications, the book assumes a familiarity with the fundamentals of spectral theory of operators acting in a Hilbert space.
