A major theme is the method of taking quasihomogeneous averages. It serves as the central tool for the study of the solvability of quasihomogeneous multiplication equations and of quasihomogeneous partial differential equations with constant coefficients. Necessary and sufficient conditions for solvability are given. Several examples are treated in detail, among them the heat and the Schrödinger equation. The final chapter is devoted to quasihomogeneous wave front sets and their application to the description of singularities of quasihomogeneous distributions, in particular to quasihomogeneous fundamental solutions of the heat and of the Schrödinger equation.

Thus, the "pure" theory of production, and the theory of non-linear regression is not treated in sufficient detail: for these topics we refer to the available literature~ for a comprehensive list of references we refer to Uebe (1975). Some years ago, papers by L. J. Lau and W. E. Diewert initiated my interest in duality within production theory, and then I started to appreciate R. W. Shephard's fundamental contribution to this topic. This monograph is a (minor) revision of a Ph. D. dissertation submitted to the Department of Economics, The University of Wisconsin, Madison, in August 1973. The Graduate School and the Social Systems Research Institute provided funds for the reported computer work, Lawrence R. Klein and Laurits R. Christensen provided data, and as a Graduate Student I received financial support in form of an University Fellowship~ all this is very much appreciated. With some nostalgia I think back to the enjoyable period of learning during the preparation of my diFosertation~ I appreciate the spirit within the department, and the guidance of my committee Arthur S. EIN STEIN 1905). The first correct mathematical construction of a Markov process with continuous trajectories was given by N. WIENER in 1923. (This process is often called the Wiener process.) The general theory of Markov processes was developed in the 1930's and 1940's by A. N. KOL MOGOROV, W. FELLER, W. DOEBLlN, P. LEVY, J. L. DOOB, and others. During the past ten years the theory of Markov processes has entered a new period of intensive development. The methods of the theory of semigroups of linear operators made possible further progress in the classification of Markov processes by their infinitesimal characteristics. The broad classes of Markov processes with continuous trajectories be came the main object of study. The connections between Markov pro cesses and classical analysis were further developed. It has become possible not only to apply the results and methods of analysis to the problems of probability theory, but also to investigate analytic problems using probabilistic methods. Remarkable new connections between Markov processes and potential theory were revealed. The foundations of the theory were reviewed critically: the new concept of strong Markov process acquired for the whole theory of Markov processes great importance.
