Book Environmental Impact Assessment of Buildings

Download or read book Environmental Impact Assessment of Buildings written by Wahidul Biswas and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue covers a wide range of areas—including building orientation, service life, use of photocatalytically active structures and PV facades, implications of transportation system, building types (i.e., high rise, multilevel, commercial, residential), life cycle assessment, and structural engineering—that need to be considered in the environmental impact assessment of buildings, and the chapters include case studies across the globe. Consideration of these strategies would help reduce energy and material consumption, environmental emissions, and waste generation associated with all phases of a building’s life cycle. Chapter 1 demonstrates that green star concrete exhibits the same structural properties as conventional concrete in Australia. Chapter 2 showed that the use of TiO2 as a photocatalyst on the surface of construction materials with a suitable stable binding agent, such as aggregates, would enable building walls to absorb NOx from air. This study found that TiO2 has the potential to reduce ambient concentrations of NOx from areas where this pollutant becomes concentrated under solar irradiation. Chapter 3 presents the life cycle assessment of architecturally integrated glass–glass photovoltaics in building facades to find the appropriate material composition for a multicolored PV façade offering improved environmental performance. Chapter 4 shows that urban office buildings lacking appropriate orientation experienced indoor overheating. Chapter 5 details four modeling approaches that were implemented to estimate buildings’ response towards load shedding. Chapter 6 covers the life cycle GHG emissions of high-rise residential housing block to discover opportunities for environmental improvement. Chapter 7 discusses an LCA framework that took into account variation in the service life of buildings associated with the use of different types of materials. Chapter 8 presents a useful data mining algorithm to conduct life cycle asset management in residential developments built on transport systems.

In The Battle for Justice in Palestine, Abunimah looks at the shifting tides of Palestine and the Israelis in a neoliberal world—and makes a compelling and surprising case for why the Palestine solidarity movement just might win. Abunimah is a Palestinian-American journalist and major proponent of a one-state solution with equality for all. In The Battle for Justice in Palestine, he shares his hopeful vision of victory against Israeli apartheid and colonialism. “This is the book to read to understand the present bizarre and ongoing complexity of the Palestine/Israel tragedy.” —Alice Walker

Book Capillary Electrophoresis in Food Analysis

Download or read book Capillary Electrophoresis in Food Analysis written by María Castro-Puyana and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2022-06-20 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference describes recent advances and applications of capillary electrophoresis in the field of food science. The first two chapters are devoted to the fundamentals of capillary electrophoresis, and to the main sample preparation techniques used for food analysis using this miniaturized separation technique, respectively. These two introductory chapters are followed by several chapters focused on the different strategies for analyzing specific food components, including lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, peptides, amino acids, vitamins, polyphenols, and food additives. The information provided in these chapters helps readers to understand and develop appropriate methods to carry out a deep characterization of food samples. Relevant concepts such as food authentication, chemical food safety or the control of the quality and safety of dietary supplements, and food metabolomics are also covered, where appropriate. The big potential of capillary electrophoresis to achieve chiral separations and the determination of enantiomers in food samples or to develop targeted and non-targeted metabolomics strategies to ensure food safety and quality is also described. As an additional step towards analytical miniaturization, a chapter devoted to food analysis by microchip electrophoresis is also included in this book. All 14 chapters are contributed by highly experienced researchers in the field. Capillary Electrophoresis in Food Analysis is a key source of information for food chemists and analytical chemists in industry (quality control laboratories) and academia (research labs and training courses).

Download or read book Jewish Travellers written by Elkan Nathan Adler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1930. The wandering Jew is a very real character in the great drama of history. He has travelled as nomad and settler, as fugitive and conqueror, as exile and colonist and as merchant and scholar. Of necessity bilingual and therefore the master of many languages, the Jew was the ideal commercial traveller and interpreter. Based on the volume of 24 Hebrew texts of Jewish travellers by J D Eisenstein, this volume begins with the ninth century. After the sixteenth century geographical discoveries had made the whole world familiar to most people. Consequently, the wandering Jew becomes less the diplomatist or scientist but still remains a link between the scattered members of the Diaspora. The volume ends in the middle of the eighteenth century and taken as a whole provides a survey of Jewish travel during the Middle Ages. For this translation, some of the texts have been abridged, whilst retaining many of the original notes.
