Book excerpt: Studies were conducted in heptane with cobalt alloys on a disk-and-conforming-shoe apparatus simulating the single motion of a human hip joint. The results showed that cobalt-molybdenumchromium alloys were brittle; that the surface finished by grinding fragmented locally; and that, subsequently, abrasion of sliding surfaces occurred. When the ground surfaces were altered by glass-bead blasting, fragmentation during the wear process was minimized. Particles loosened by the grinding.process were removed, and the bead-blasted surface provided pockets to entrap debris. Friction and wear for the bead-blasted cobalt-molybdenum-chromium alloy were significantly lower than for vitallium.

Solid-solution strengthening is obtained from the high-melting metallic elements molybdenum, tungsten, tantalum, and columbium. These elements also participate in precipitation reactions involving their carbides. Precipitation of intermetallic compounds such as Ni3Ti is an important process in cobalt alloys containing appreciable amounts of nickel and titanium. The relationships among microstructure, heat treatment, and mechanical properties of the important commercial alloys are considered, and whenever possible, explained on the basis of the physical and chem cal processes that occur. In Ni-Cr alloys, for example, chromium content has been decreased gradually, and the aluminum content increased to the extent that the alloys now are basically Ni-Cr-Al alloys. In the review current data relating to the oxidation of the relevant pure metals and their binary and ternary alloys are examined first, and then data on oxidation of the more complex engineering alloys are considered. The oxidizing atmosphere is assumed to be oxygen or air, but the mechanisms described generally are applicable to other oxidizing atmospheres. (Author).

All of the superalloys will oxidize at high temperatures when oxygen is present in the enveloping atmosphere. The rate of oxidation depends upon alloy composition, temperature, oxygen concentration, oxides formed, diffusion rates of the metals in both base metal and oxide, diffusion rate of oxygen in the oxide, solubility of oxygen in the matrix, and a host of other variables. The effects of oxidation can be beneficial or they can be harmful. The first section of this report deals with the fundamentals of the oxidation of Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloys. Subsequent sections discuss general surface oxidation, intergranular oxidation, other subsurface oxidation, and the effect of stress on the rate of oxidation. Numerous specific alloys are mentioned in the report; as an aid to the reader, the appendix contains an alloy index of the alloys mentioned in the report along with the compositions of the alloys, and the pages on which mention of the alloys is made.
