Book Children of Reunion

Download or read book Children of Reunion written by Allison Varzally and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1961, the U.S. government established the first formalized provisions for intercountry adoption just as it was expanding America's involvement with Vietnam. Adoption became an increasingly important portal of entry into American society for Vietnamese and Amerasian children, raising questions about the United States' obligations to refugees and the nature of the family during an era of heightened anxiety about U.S. global interventions. Whether adopting or favoring the migration of multiracial individuals, Americans believed their norms and material comforts would salve the wounds of a divisive war. However, Vietnamese migrants challenged these efforts of reconciliation. As Allison Varzally details in this book, a desire to redeem defeat in Vietnam, faith in the nuclear family, and commitment to capitalism guided American efforts on behalf of Vietnamese youths. By tracing the stories of Vietnamese migrants, however, Varzally reveals that while many had accepted separations as a painful strategy for survival in the midst of war, most sought, and some eventually found, reunion with their kin. This book makes clear the role of adult adoptees in Vietnamese and American debates about the forms, privileges, and duties of families, and places Vietnamese children at the center of American and Vietnamese efforts to assign responsibility and find peace in the aftermath of conflict.

Book We Are Their Heaven

Download or read book We Are Their Heaven written by Allison DuBois and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-12-09 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In We Are Their Heaven, Allison explores both connection and communication between the living and the dead. Throughout the book, Allison explains her link with the dead and allows those she has read for to share their own experiences with us. They identify the 'calling cards' of the dead, the initial private piece of information that serves to legitimize that the deceased is in fact trying to contact their loved one. Each chapter focuses on a different type of connection and loss: of parents, children, siblings, friends and spouses. With each reading, Allison's compassion is clearly seen. She explains how the spirit world requires a different sort of 'listening' from her. When you can 'feel' someone near you, she urges that this is not your imagination, but a heightened sense of awareness and what she calls a spiritual encounter. Her account of speaking to a group of parents of murdered children allows us to see that she sees as she walks into the room and finds each of the dead children there with their living parents. Don't Kiss Them Goodbye was a rewarding book for anyone interested in mediums. With We Are Their Heaven, Allison expands her audience. From a perspective few can offer, she shares heartbreaking and heartwarming tales of connection from the other side and provides comforting proof that our loved ones stay with us long after they are gone. Anyone who has experienced loss will find this book quenches their curiosity and soothes their hearts about those we miss.

When Shelly’s mom dies suddenly, Shelly’s relationship to ghosts—and death—changes. Instead of helping spirits move on, Shelly starts hoarding them. Book excerpt: The Grammy- and Academy Award- nominated singer-songwriter's haunting, lyrical memoir, sharing the story of an unthinkable act of violence and ultimate healing through art Mobile, Alabama, 1986. A fourteen-year-old girl is awakened by the unmistakable sound of gunfire. On the front lawn, her father has shot and killed her mother before turning the gun on himself. Allison Moorer would grow up to be an award-winning musician, with her songs likened to "a Southern accent: eight miles an hour, deliberate, and very dangerous to underestimate" (Rolling Stone). But that moment, which forever altered her own life and that of her older sister, Shelby, has never been far from her thoughts. Now, in her journey to understand the unthinkable, to parse the unknowable, Allison uses her lyrical storytelling powers to lay bare the memories and impressions that make a family, and that tear a family apart. Blood delves into the meaning of inheritance and destiny, shame and trauma -- and how it is possible to carve out a safe place in the world despite it all. With a foreword by Allison's sister, Grammy winner Shelby Lynne, Blood reads like an intimate journal: vivid, haunting, and ultimately life-affirming.

Book Feeding Family Feeding America

Download or read book Feeding Family Feeding America written by Allison Hill and published by . This book was released on 2020-12 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our family took our quarantine time to create a cookbook of our favorite meals to benefit those most in need, donating proceeds to Feeding America, the nation's largest and most effective organization dedicated to fighting domestic hunger through a network of food banks. Each book purchased will provide up to 100 meals. This book is meant to give ideas for creating delicious, flavorful foods that take very little effort and the whole family loves. We also included the influence of one of our town's best, local ingredients we pick up straight from the boats on the dock - lobster! It wouldn't be a family cookbook without the whole family participating as key grips, food stylists and taste testers. My daughter Cristina (16) was food photographer; Chauncey (19) was creative director; and, my nieces Carlisle (22), Cate (19) and Caroline (16) took the lead with naming and food styling. Noni (76) cooked, tasted and edited, edited, and edited until she couldn't take it anymore. Pop (76) just tasted. We loved working on our project...together. We hope you enjoy this peek into our family recipes, all while helping others. Proceeds are donated to the non-profit hunger relief organization, Feeding America
